Sketching him
Dragon hybrid Qifrey where Olruggio is the most precious treasure of his hoard. In this essay I will-
Thinking about Orufrey cuddling a bed.
A sleeping Qifrey holds Olruggio to his chest like a plushie, ensuring his lover doesn't slip back to his workshop in the middle of the night.
Olruggio can recognize when he's been outwitted. (He is exactly where he wants to be.)
Even if he has trouble sleeping, Olruggio is more than content to stay in his lover's arms, and admire how soft and beautiful Qifrey is in sleep.
He relishes in how they got their happy ending together after all.
Thinking about a moment post-canon where a colleague - who is also a huge fan of Olruggio's - visits the atelier. The girls, who are now well into their teens, notice how this visitor can't stop gushing over Olruggio, hogging all his attention and space.
Their visitor even stays for dinner, occupying the seat right next to Olruggio.
Qifrey's usual seat.
Meanwhile, Qifrey stands by the counter and eating. He insists he doesn't mind. This way, it's easier to watch over the desserts he's making.
The girls are bothered though. Their guest keeps touching Olruggio's shoulder and laughing too hard. Richeh sends over her best stink eye to their greedy guest. Agott, being Agott, keeps to herself, but eats more passive aggressively than usual.
Tetia wasn't too pressed about it until she passed the guest their food, but they were too busy gushing over Olruggio that they didn't thank her.
Coco keeps sending weary looks over to Qifrey, wondering if he’s okay with this. She also tries casting a warning expression over to Olruggio, but the man is so focused on eating and conversing, he might as well have been blind to Coco's signs.
"Al'right then, I should be gettin' back't work," Olruggio says, dabbing his face with a napkin.
"Would you mind if you showed me your workshop? I'm awfully curious about seeing where all your magic happens," the visitor pipes up, winking.
Olruggio blinks for a moment. This is it, the girls think. The moment their visitor will be turned away and finally leave!
"Sure, but only a peek. Can't do a whole tour when I've got me deadlines to meet, y'know," Olruggio agrees. He brings their empty plates over to the sink, then bumps his hip against Qifrey's. "Delicious dinner as always, Qifrey."
The girls watch with barely concealed irritation as Olruggio leads the way-too-happy-visitor out of the room.
"Qifrey-sensei! You must go after them immediately!" Tetia exclaims, bounding over to their teacher.
"What for? Olly's just showing them his shop," Qifrey replies calmly.
"They're definitely trying to seduce Olly-sensei," Richeh mutters.
Chaos erupts after that. Coco and Tetia worriedly speak over each other, Richeh's hand movements go wild, and Agott's smushing her face in her hands.
"Girls- oh my- girls, it's fine-" Qifrey tries, and fails, to contain the frantic energy.
Fortunately, the visitor's voice floats through the room once again.
"I'll be taking my leave now," they announce. "Olruggio's still in his workshop, of course."
The girls' chatter die down. They stare with mixed expressions of trepidation and distrust. The visitor either doesn't notice or pays them no mind. They walk past the girls and directly up to Qifrey.
"Here. Olruggio said you left this in his workshop earlier," the visitor says, dangling an item in the air.
It's Qifrey's belt. Which he didn't even notice he had forgone wearing since the morning.
"Oh, thank you," Qifrey mutters, accepting the item.
The visitor tips their head and leaves.
Qifrey quickly wraps up dinner, shoves dessert into the girls' hands, and sends them off to bed. Albeit quite early for girls their age to sleep, Qifrey will do anything to distract them from wondering why exactly his belt was in Olly's workshop.
After cleaning up, Qifrey walks down the hall until he sees the familiar, gaudy-looking "do not disturb" sign. Qifrey ensures the sign is propely hung before slipping in, and locking the door behind him.
Inside, Qifrey looks up and spots Olruggio leaning on his desk, lost in thought. In one hand, Qifrey holds leftover dessert; he brings his other hand up to clear his throat.
“So, how was the little tour with our guest?” Qifrey asks. Olruggio's eyes shoot towards the soft voice in the quiet workshop. He uses his sylph shoes to fly down, landing as light as a feather.
Then, Olruggio steps right into Qifrey’s personal space. He circles Qifrey with his arms, and leans close enough that their foreheads touch.
“'Twas quick. They seemed really interested at first. 'Till they found your belt. Then, they excused themselves an' walked off…” Olruggio hums. His eyes catch sight of the dessert in Qifrey's hand. "Is that for me-?"
Olruggio cuts off upon seeing Qifrey's smile turn a bit sharp, and a bit mean. Oh. Olruggio's stomach does a little flip.
The next second, Qifrey takes Olruggio's lips in a long, filthy kiss.
“Then, everything went perfectly," Qifrey whispers smugly.

Thinking about the lasting effects of wiping Olruggio’s memories too many times…
He rapidly deteriorates, then goes into a permanent coma. And then he slips away.
They had confessed, right before the disaster. One moment, they were sharing the most magical moment ever with their first kiss, the next moment, Qifrey was on the floor. Branches stem at an alarming rate as he writhed in pain.
It was too dangerous. Olruggio begs Qifrey to erase his memories if it will save his life. Qifrey goes through the motions of casting the spell, feeling like the most twisted thing to exist. Olly’s eyes are gentle. Understanding. Loving, even.
"Next time, I'll figure out a way to kiss you twice," Olly promises. Qifrey nods shakily.
"Yes. Yes, okay... “ Qifrey kisses Olruggio’s forehead before he places the hat on.
The memories are erased.
There is no next time.
Qifrey is never quite the same. Devastated does not even begin to describe his pain.
A biography is written about Olruggio. It speaks about his life, his accomplishments, and who he was as a person. A request arrives for Qifery to share details of his time with Olruggio of the Torch, as a very good friend until the very end.
Qifrey doesn't feel like he deserves that.
He never did. Even when Olly was here.
Though Olruggio is gone, all his contraptions and passionate ideas outlive him. They surround Qifrey’s atelier, cherished fixtures in his home. When Qifrey is cold, he thumbs over the warmth rings Olly used. But he never uses them himself.
Qifrey constantly kisses the tassel of his hat, remembering that beautiful but horrible moment. How Olly’s beard scratched his chin. How warm his hands were. How safe Qifrey felt being kissed by the one person who had been by his side his entire life.
One day, the tassel breaks. Through heart-wrenching sobs, Qifrey sews it back together. He feels just as broken as the torn tassel, as if hanging on by a mere thread.
Down the line, they save Coco’s mom. It is a joyous day.
Qifrey stops looking for a cure for himself. In a cruel and unfair way, he's already been cured. But it cost him everything.
Full of grief and anger at the unfairness of it all, Qifrey had briefly considered becoming a brim cap. Just to feel in control of something. It was indeed his lowest point.
Instead, Qifrey becomes kinder. To honor his watchful eye who now shines through Qifrey, and all the other lives Olruggio had touched. Qifrey will see to it that Olly’s kindness lives on inside him.
The girls still mourn their special Master Olly too. They don't even know the true reason why he's gone. Qifrey can’t ever tell them. He wouldn’t survive if they hated him after learning the full truth. He wouldn’t blame them if they did, either.
But perhaps telling the girls the truth is the only way Qifrey can let go. To be at complete peace, and readily reunite with Olruggio.
Master Qifrey brings his girls behind the atelier, just beyond their flourishing garden. His voice wavers like the shaky hand of a novice apprentice as he recounts the events leading up to Olruggio’s passing. How Qifrey had taken a part in it. All of it.
How even though Qifrey was cursed, he was still blessed with the kindest, most radiant star.
Now, Qifrey is cursing his beloved apprentices. With his vulnerability, and his decision to finally rest. Qifrey apologizes for being so selfish. One by one, the girls all break down.
Tetia first, then Coco.
Richeh is next.
And finally, Agott.
Tetia immediately opposes his words. Master Qifrey is the most selfless person they know! Coco desperately mentions her progress on spells that could act as a temporary cure until they found a permanent one. Richeh trembles quietly, and Agott brings her close, stubbornly wiping her own tears.
They already lost Master Olly. Why is Master Qifrey leaving them too?
With each affectionate yet heartbreaking word, silver leaves begin sprouting from Qifrey’s hair. He bravely holds his arms out, just as open and welcoming as when each girl first met him. Even braver, the girls stick to him like glue, hugging him from all sides.
Qifrey sighs in content. This… is not a terrible way to go. Embraced by his precious, precious girls.
"We love you, Master Qifrey," Richeh mumbles quietly. The other girls echo sadly.
As Qifrey's limbs shift, he never takes his eyes off of his girls.
"I love you too. My brilliant apprentices."
The girls watch how the arms that spent years holding them, teaching them, and protecting them, transform into the most beautiful branches they’ve ever seen.
They watch as that gentle eye gets lost forever.
The girls weep and continue hugging the silverwood tree. Even as the branches trap them to his sturdy trunk. They spend hours encased like this, until they are forced to free themselves by cutting a few of his branches.
Master Qifrey leaves behind his glasses, his robes, and his hat with the long, black tassel. Wet sniffles and hiccups fill the air. With their master’s belongings clutched in their hands, they realize this is the perfect spot for him to be.
The girls slowly make their way back to the atelier. They spare one, two, three, four-
Many, many more glances back at the sight of a massive silverwood tree providing shade to Master Olly’s tomb.
It is done.
Qifrey can reset.
