It was mid July, prime tourist season for Beach City. You decided to vacation there after hearing about some rather interesting events on a certain blog online- "Keep Beach City Weird!" It could be all nonesense, especially considering the guy writing it seeming like a huge dork, but what better way is there to spend your summer?

The Big Donut. You decided to stroll in after taking a tour of the rest of the town. It was early evening, and you weren't in the mood for the only other two options in the town. Plus, it seemed busy, and busy meant they must be good, right?

The donuts were the last thing that your eyes went to. You walk in, and there behind the cash register is a short, stubby blonde girl, serving donuts with an adorably awkward smile on her face, contrasting with the scrawny teen boy with skull gauges half asleep in the corner, in the same uniform the girl was wearing. He clearly wasnt being much help around here. You get in the end of the line, and soon enough, its your turn to order,

"Welcome to the Big Donut! What can I get you?" the blonde greets cheerfully, her eye contact being the first thing you notice. Did she look this intently at the rest of the customers? It takes you a moment to snap back, stammering out an order that was most certainly not the one you had on your mind walking in. While getting your order, seeing as youre the only customer in the shop at the moment, she starts some small talk with you.

"Havent seen you around town, how are you enjoying Beach City?" she asks, giving you a glance as she grabs the donut for you. You tell her about how your first day here went. Visiting the carnival, the arcade, the other food attractions, and the beach, of course. You make a comment on how busy it is, with the amount of people. "Yeah, its pretty different compared to how quiet it is outside of tourist season. Would be nice if someone could help out." the girl slid a glare towards the other employee, who huffed and rolled his eyes. "Anyway, heres your order. Thatll be $5.95."

You fumble with your wallet in your small carry on bag, pulling out your card and handing it over to pay. Your fingers brush against hers, sending a jolt up your arm. "Yknow," she starts, swiping your card, "theres an event tonight at the beach. Beach-A-Palooza, they do it every year. Music, dancing, peformace acts, its actually pretty fun. If you wanna stick around, I could go with you? Well, if youre free."

Your heart thumps. Woah, a cute stranger is asking you to an event tonight? You didnt have time to process how that seemed to bug the boy in the corner before you nodded and agreed with a smile. She wrote something on a napkin before handing it to you, along with your card, and waved you off as you left the shop.

It wasnt long after that night until you two made it official.

You and Sadie, thanks to you living just a few towns over, were able to visit each other often. Usually it would be you driving over to her house, cuddling in the basement as you watched many of the horror and thriller movies from her collection. Her mom adores you. First time you meet her, its an immidiate hug. "Sadie! You didnt tell me were bringing home such a pretty girl! Ill have to pack two lunches in your bag now -" "Mom! Please, no more lunches." Its very safe to say you have secured a future mother in law, because as far as Barbara is concerned, youre now her daughter. "Way better than that donut boy. Oh! You girl want any snacks? Help yousrself, hon!"

You two would also have little dates on the beach together. Shed bring a small box of pastries from work, youd set up a speaker, and you two would sit in front of the waves while her favorite rock bands played in the background of your conversation. You would catch her humming or singing along to a particular song, but after noticing you staring in admiration, shed apologize and stop with a sheepish giggle. Even after assuring her that you love her voice, she still gets nervous around you. You make her feel too fuzzy, but she loves it.

When you couldnt be there in person, video call was there. You two would call on her breaks, and on yours, just to be with each other. Shed complain about Lars and how he did next to nothing to help around the shop, but whenever you suggest firing him- even saying that Steven kid would be a better fit- shed decline, saying he still meant well. Shes a sweetheart, but especially after hearing how he toyed with her feelings before, you hated him. If you were there, hed be gone within the first half of your shift.

And thats almost what happened, as you ended up working part time at the Big Donut. Youd say its because you like the quiet atmosphere, but really? Its because your girlfriend is there. No complaint from Sadie, you made her usual boring and stagnant shifts actually bareable. As you work and serve the customers, flirting and giggling with Sadie, Lars is practically seething in the background, and you love pissing that guy off every single time. Sadie is worried its gonna cause tension, but you certiainly are not. Whats he gonna do? Hit you with his twiggy arms for stealing Sadie from him? Believe me, he knows you deserve her more.

Note: i havent finished the series, dunno if they could fit in canon so the lore isnt fleshed out, but heres my Rose and Serpentine is an Earth created gem, they fall in love and make a giant woman. I literally just wanted so bad to make a giant woman.

Also i am a little in love w how the character design on these turned out 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ Ill do a full lineart color eventually 🤪

CAN WE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING

I THINK STEVEN IS ONE OF THE MOST WELL-WRITTEN AND LIKEABLE MCS IVE EVER ENCOUNTERED

Like fr i feel like main characters inherently have to be written flawed and that makes them relatable but unlikeable and Rebecca Sugar has made an MC who is not only relatable and flawed but like his FLAWS are likeable. He is empathetic and quippy and a little childish but in a manner that you understand thats why hes got such creative and ingenuitive problem solving and i know thats like the point, but good on her for making the reasons he drives the show still loveable and funny. He isn’t annoying, he isnt stupid and he isn’t underhandedly mean in ways he has to make up for.

His flaws that create the problems to drive the episode and the story are simply that he cares and sometimes its misguided or uninformed and he uses the fact that he cares and doesnt know as the ways to find solutions that no one else sees. Its like beautifully thought out in a way that I dont know if ive ever seen before. Him seeing the best in everyone is the way he finds creative ways to resolve the conflicts and I think its incredible.

Fuckin shout out to Rebecca Sugar for doing something real here bc his character development is exclusively on becoming more competent in his powers and even moRE CREATIVE WITH EMPATHETIC RESOLVES. Like understanding is how he makes things work for him but he doesnt start out dumb or anything, just naive and i think it makes for an MC that only starts likeable and gets more so instead of unlikeable bc of his own ignorance to likeable bc of less. Its brilliant. Youre brilliant.

I just started this show (im on s2) but fr I have so much shit to say as an ARTIST as a WRITER as a QUEER PERSON as a HUMAN BEING
