Kinda love the idea of Odasaku having been in love with Ango but not saying anything because Ango is a mafioso and Odasaku is a former assassin and a father that will one day leave the PM and Ango dosent need to be dragged down by him.

The thing is though, Ango loves him too but never says anything because Odasaku is a mafioso and Ango is a spy and Odasaku doesnt need to be even more dragged down by his eventual betrayal then he already will.

They are both each other's what ifs in short time when Ango is revealed and the orphans hadnt died yet. They sit there at the bar with Dazai between them - Dazai who had seen it all and didnt know until too late that they wouldn't have more time - and feel their hearts breaking as Ango tries to salvage things. He tries to, but when Dazai pushes Ango away then Odasaku does the same, because he loves Dazau too (though in a different way) and is loyal to him rather than a man that risk killing them all if they meet each other once more like they were then.

Neither ever got to say goodbye.

Ango helping Dazai run is a love letter to a man buried by the sea that will never get to read it.

You got Akutagawa and Atsushi. Who both have such atrocious self-esteem that they feel like they need to earn a right to their existence, either through helping other people or by accumulating their own strength. It's not about how they feel about the world or their experience. They see themselves as inherently more pathetic than others, less competent, less worthy, simply because of how powerless they were as children. They LIKE living. They WANT to live. They just feel like they're not allowed to.

Then you have Dazai and Chuuya, who have all the self-loathing in the world but who understand their own competence. It's not about being allowed to live, it's about the point of it. What's the point of living if everything you want to keep gets taken away eventually? What's the point of living when you yourself aren't someone who's capable of living the way other people are? What's the point of living if you don't feel human most of the time?

It's why these idiots can understand their respective partners, but not anyone else in this shonen-protagonist-square mess. How do I help a subordinate who bases his entire concept of self-worth on some shitty guy? How do I understand why my mentor wants to die when I myself feel the inherent joys of living?

Fight 1: Atsushi’s just existing. Akutagawa’s just there for a casual bout of occupational murder (Akutagawa almost kind of wins)

Fight 2: Akutagawa hates Atsushi out of intense jealousy, Atsushi hates Akutagawa because he tried to murder him and is holding him and a 14 year old girl hostage (Atsushi wins)
