a/n: every time i go on pinterest in search for pictures, i genuinely lose myself π i had this in my drafts for so long, i almost forgot about it π also it's my birthday month, let me celebrate it in advance π
i pause the movie as i hear movement outside my bedroom door. i try my hardest to hear whatβs been said, but it sounds muffled.
βthatβs weirdβ¦β i mumble as I get up from my bed and slide my feet into my slippers.
i glance at my phone and it reads two-thirty-seven at night. zero notifications from my roommate β sheβs not supposed to be home for another three hours, so why is she home?
i put on my robe and wrap it tightly around me as i try to open my door as quietly as i can. the hallway is dark, but some light shines from the kitchen.
the hushed voices get louder as I carefully get closer.
βbe careful β or youβll wake her!β someone whispers.
βweβre fine! she sleeps like a log!β
i stop in my tracks. i know these voices.
my phone vibrates in my hand. a message from my roommate.
got sent home earlier. will be home soon-ish.
riiiight.
so, who the fuck is in my kitchen then?
i go back to the hall closet and grab the wooden bat.
as i tip toe closer back to the kitcken, i can hear them talking more clearly.
"use a smaller plate."
"why?"
"the bigger plate makes it look like we took more."
"we are taking more."
"yeah, but it looks suspicious."
i close my eyes and take a deep breath as i recognise the voices.
still clutching the bat in my hand, i round around the corner and stand in front of the kitchen entrance.
and there they are.
yunho and mingi.
annoying neighbours from across the hall.
even more annoying friends from across the hall.
they said they werenβt coming back.
so why are they standing in my kitchen at 2 a.m., like they never left.
i cross my arms across my chest. tongue poking at my inner cheek.
the two idiot giants i call friends, were standing in front of my fridge with the door wide open. mingi holding a dessert plate while yunho holds the leftover birthday cake from the party they threw for me hours earlier.
both far too focused on the task at hand. slicing my cake as if it were a science.
"what are you doing?" my voice was low.
they still jumped like frightened pandas.
"fucking hell!!" yunho yelped, nearly dropping the cake.
mingi struggled to balance the plate in his hand, almost dropping it as well.
"what are you doing?" mingi shot back.
i stared at him.
then at the plate in his hand.
then at yunho.
who was still holding my birthday cake.
"you broke into my apartment."
"we didn't break in," yunho argued immediately.
"you are literally inside my apartment at almost three in the morning."
"we used a key."
"that is still breaking in! and the key is for emergencies!"
they look at each other. then at me.
"this is an emergency"
i deadpan at them. can't even believe these two and their idiotic logic.
"cake is not an emergency"
they both gasp, ofended.
"you take that back!"
i drop my head onto my hand as they clutch the plates to their chest to the best of their abilities.
i sometimes wonder how im friends with them. truly.
"you ate cake three hours ago," i reminded them. "before you all left after the party was over."
"exactly."
i frowned.
yunho frowned back.
"as in recently."
"no," he said. "as in three hours ago."
"...that's recent."
"not in cake time."
i stared at him.
"what does that even mean?"
"it means," mingi cut in seriously, "that three hours is a long time to go without cake."
i looked between them.
neither laughed.
neither even smiled.
the idiots were completely serious.
"oh my god."
"we were suffering," Yunho said.
"you were asleep."
"and hungry."
"you have food."
"we wanted cake."
"i sent you home with cake"
both of them paused.
then mingi pointed at the slice sitting on the plate in his hands.
"this is cake."
"yes... so is the one at your apartment"
"the cake at our apartment is gone."
"because you ate it."
"exactly."
i blinked. slowly. painfully.
the logic somehow made less sense every time they spoke.
i looked toward the ceiling as if some higher power might explain why these two had been allowed to reach adulthood.
no answer came.
"do the others know you're here?"
the guilty silence answered immediately. my eyes narrowed.
"yunho."
"it wasn't planned."
"mingi."
"we were watching a movie."
"at your apartment."
"then yunho said he wanted more cake."
yunho pointed accusingly.
"you agreed."
"because you made a compelling argument."
"what argument?"
"'there's still cake at her place.'"
i let out a long sigh.
the two of them stood there looking absurdly pleased with themselves.
one holding a plate. the other, still clutching half my birthday cake.
like oversized toddlers caught with their hand in the cookie jar.
"you're unbelievable."
"we get that a lot."
"get out."
they gasped. again. honestly was starting to think they practised it.
"you'd throw us out?" yunho asked, pouting. looking like a kicked puppy.
the audacity of these grown men weaponising their cuteness after breaking into my apartment.
"you broke into my apartment."
"with permission."
"i did not give permission."
"you gave us the emergency key."
"FOR EMERGENCIES."
"this was an emergency."
i raised the bat slightly.
yunho immediately hid behind mingi. cowards. both of them.
mingi looked down at him.
"you said she wouldn't be mad." he whispered, or tried to.
"i thought she'd still be asleep."
"that's not what I asked."
"well, now she's awake and armed."
while they bickered like children. my stomach thought it would be a great time to manifest its hunger.
we froze at the sound. i'm mortified while they look entertained.
they slowly got closer to me. painfully slow, while holding the cake and three forks.
it feels like im being coerced into the dark side. damn them and their good looks.
i reluctantly lower the bat until i let it drop on the floor. they try to contain their giggles, while i try not to smile at their antics.
they guide me to the couch, and i go along. no point in fighting them, honestly. they eventually tire you out and it's best if you just surrender while you're ahead.
yunho settles beside me with a victorious grin while mingi carefully places the cake on the coffee table like we've just completed some important mission.
three forks.
half a birthday cake.
outside, the building is silent.
inside, my apartment is occupied by two idiots who think wanting cake is an emergency worth breaking into my apartment for.
i watch them argue over who gets the bigger slice and shake my head.
maybe i should be annoyed.
maybe i should throw them out.
instead, i steal the first bite of cake while they're distracted.
their offended protests fill the room immediately.
and somehow, despite the broken sleep, the near heart attack, and the fact that they technically broke into my apartment, i can't stop smiling.

so you had a free day. felix had texted you, inviting you for a 'bestie day' since he was free as well.
you had made plans to meet at the coffee shop next to the gym. after your workout.
and that's where you were. freshly showered, duffle bag hanging from your shoulder.
it's still early in the morning, so it isn't that crowded yet.
you get in, and the bell above the door announces your entry. you do a quick scan of the room and notice changbin sitting at one of the tables at the back, near the window but not directly in front of it.
he's looking at his phone. arm resting on the table while supporting his head. leg bouncing up in down restlessly.
he looks cute today. but honestly, you think he looks cute every time you see him.
unless he's actively working out. you try your best to not look, but sometimes you can't help yourself. always so focused.
even when he's with his friends, he tries to guide them and help them as best he can. even though most of the time it ends up in bickering and laughter.
you've stopped your music once or twice just so you could hear him laughing. giggling.
he hasn't noticed you. and so you look at him a bit more, while waiting in line.
once you turn comes, you order your usual and while you wait for it, you ponder if you should go to him or not. try talking to him again.
maybe it'll go better outside the gym? in a different environment?
after you get your order, you take it to his table.
you can feel your heartbeat accelerating and your hands getting cold and clammy. but you'll blame that on the iced beverage in your hands.
"good morning"
the sound of your voice startles him.
well, not really just your voice. he saw you coming in. and tried his best not to stare at you while you were waiting in line.
which proved considerably harder than expected.
because you looked pretty.
well... you always look pretty.
but seeing you so relaxed, in your casual clothes. hair still slightly damp from your shower... doesn't help at all.
it's one thing to see you regularly at the gym. with your hair always up. headphones in. in your cute matching sets.
this is different though.
"...hi" he murmurs.
cute. you smile at him.
"mind if I sit?"
he looks at you, confused. you gesture to the empty chair across from him.
"oh... yeah. of course."
you settle into the seat across from him.
for a moment, neither of you speak.
not because it's uncomfortable.
more because you're both trying to figure out how to talk to each other without sounding stupid.
"so..." you start.
"so..." he says at exactly the same time.
you both stop.
then laugh.
"you go first," you tell him.
"no, it's okay."
"changbin."
his ears immediately turn pink.
"right."
you bite back a smile.
"see? now i'm curious."
he rubs the back of his neck.
"i just... haven't seen you for a while"
you look at him. he looks so cute, all nervous.
"yeah... i hurt my ankle at work and so i took a few days off to rest it and not make it worse"
"you got hurt? but are you okay?"
his concern for you was palpable. his nervousness quickly turn to worry and you could see it in the way he widened his eyes and furrowed his eyebrows.
"i'm fine, it was nothing serious"
"are you sure?"
you chuckle at that. for someone who hasn't been able to function, every time you say hi, sure is talking a lot now.
"i'm sure, don't worry, i just tripped on a toy and my feet landed wrong and i twisted it"
he winces and leans back. finally relaxing since he saw you come in.
just a little.
enough that his shoulders aren't up around his ears anymore.
enough that he actually looks at you instead of the table every five seconds.
"that sounds painful"
you nod, grimacing at the memory. you have no idea how you didn't break your ankle. but he doesn't need to know that.
"and they trust you with our future?" he asks playfully.
you gasp dramatically, gripping your chest in mocking pain. you can see a small smile tug at his lips. a small giggle escapes him.
"wooow"
"sorry" he giggles.
"no you're not" you smile back at him, and he rubs one hand on his face, trying to hide his smile.
"i'm just saying"
you bite your inner cheek before leaning in.
"you know... for your information, mister, they usually are the reason i get hurt"
you laugh, leaning back against your own chair.
"it's okay, they usually insist on kissing it better" you shrug your shoulders and take a sip of your drink, looking at him over the rim of your cup.
you both fall into comfortable silence. not the awkward one that usually haunts you both. hours after the failed attempt at communicating.
and it gets interrupted by both your phones pinging at the same time.

felix. you should've known.
"that little shit" you mutter
"felix?"
"felix" you confirm, sighing.
"you were waiting for him as well?" he asks
"yeah... we were supposed to spend the day together, since we both had a free day"

you blink. and you look at him.

"...he sent you money too?"
he blinks at you too. his full lips form a cute pout, and you try really hard not to stare.
"...yeah" he confirms, still looking adorably confused.
you make a silent note to thank your newly best friend. not before you murder him from setting you up like this. specially when you had told him not to meddle.
"well... i guess we need to make the most of it" you suggest.
after a few seconds β that feel like hours to you β he smiles brightly and nods. you're actually surprised he has lasted this long talking to you.

I did toy with that idea for a while, actually!! them not knowing reader is a daycare employee for longer, and that would have been really fun specially once she's included in their inner circle, cause the way we talk sometimes about certain things can be perceived differently by those that don't know what we do π (i, like reader, work with kids as well π€)

he'd most definitely short circuit every time he realised his inevitable crush on her. and every time she mentions her kids he would be like storing all that info cause to him it's her children, so they're important and he needs to know all about them, right?? but then like i feel he'd be talking about it with maybe minho or chan and they'd point that that he's mentioning 5+ kids, because omg she has how many kids???
and all this time this short mountain of fluff and muscle has spend god knows how long to come to terms of crushing on a single mom and not once has she ever said anything about being a momma?? this man would be buffering, so confused but also to shy to ask?? so it'd take a veeeery long time.
and felix not being that great at meeting new people is so cute to think tho!!! like this man that is a literal sunshine wants to meet new people and make friends and usually has the courage to approach but then, in this case, reader looks at him confused and apprehensive and the words get stuck in his throat.
and he stands there. looking at reader all nervous and shy and with this big pout and big brown eyes and reader would most likely melt (wouldn't we all?) and treat him like one of her kids. which would make them think that she's a mom even more!! like they all share two brain cells, and they're fighting for third place.
so maybe later on one of them would ask to see a picture of her kids, and she whips out a class photo, and they're so confused like, "which one is yours' and she's like "...all of them?"
cue they all looking at her. and she clocks them. instantly.
that would be fun to write. might do an alternative version π€
did you enjoy waking up at the break of dawn everyday? hell no.
did you do it anyway? yes. sometimes.
you'd much rather stay in bed and rot until you had to eventually get up for work, but, you needed to be consistent with your routine.
you don't necessarily love the gym. but you don't really hate it either.
would a spa day be more appealing and desperately what you need? yes.
but did the gym also help you with your daily life? also yes.
you lived alone and the elevator in your building was broken more times than not, and so carrying your groceries up to the 5th floor left you a bit winded and ready to collapse more than once.
doesn't help that your job is already physically demanding enough, and you're too exhausted at the end of the day.
so the solution? gym in the mornings before work.
nothing major. or too demanding.
you don't want to risk injuring yourself before work. or ending up too sore that you can't do your job after.
you got dressed, and packed your duffel back before taking off to the gym close to the daycare you work at.
what you like about the gym at this hour, is how empty it usually is. and the few people that are in, are too focused on their own workout.
today, you made way to where the dumbells are usually kept. setting your water bottle, towel and phone next to the bench you made your choice of weights for this morning.
you had your headphones on, volume as loud as you could bear it, and you focused on your workout.
by the time you were all red with sweat running down your skin, you noticed in the mirror two figures setting their stuff near you.
far enough to not be a bother, but close enough you could probably hear them if your music wasn't so loud.
throughout your workout you notice them stealing glances your way β although you discard it as them checking themselves in the mirror.

no matter how attractive and friendly he seems, you're always a bit apprehensive when approached. especially at the gym.

you look over his shoulder and notice the other one battling with himself. elbow prompted over his crossed arm while biting his nails.

he waves it off and starts talking, and instead of stopping him and resuming your workout. you let him spark a conversation with you.
there's something disarming about him. maybe his smile. his warm aura, maybe.

it's purely coincidental that he knows she rests on tuesdays and thursdays. sometimes on the weekends as well.

your doorbell rang as you stirred the pasta sauce, and you couldn't help but feel giddy. you already knew who it was β you were expecting him
you tried to finish as much of your work as physically possible, but you were nervous.
did you have reason to be nervous? no. you've hung out with him alone plenty of times. you've gone out on multiple dates already, for god's sake.
but somehow... today feels different. especially after what was revealed in the group chat earlier.
you lowered the heat on the stove and wiped your hands on the kitchen towel, putting it on your shoulder.
you took a deep breath, buzzed him in, and while you waited for him to come up, you smoothed your clothes down and checked around you, making sure everything was perfect.
you knew he didn't care, but you wanted things to be nice.
you could hear the elevator out in the hallway, his footsteps getting closer.
you opened the door before he could knock. you both stood there, staring at each other. you could feel his eyes on you. soft. warm. lingering, the same way yours lingered on him.
"what's that?" you eye the small paper bag in his hand.
"ohβ" he subtly shakes his head, your voice bringing him back from deep within his thought.
"i uh... i got you a new notebook" he darted his eyes at you, assessing your reaction
"i remembered you saying yours was at capacity and i know how you like to doodle as you write, so i got you the one with dots instead of lines"
his eyes β wide and hopeful β stared at your own glassy ones. you couldn't believe he had noticed. he remembered something you said in passing. honestly more to yourself than anyone else. you had a habit of voicing your thoughts out loud for your own thought process.
and... he was listening to you?
he paid attention to your rambling and decided to help in a thoughtful way.
you took a shaky breath and accepted the bag from him.
your fingers brushed against his and his warmth still sends shivers up your spine.
you don't think you'll ever get used to his touch. and honestly? you really don't want to.
you want to keep feeling like this for as long as he lets you have him.

you look softly at him, and smile, tilting your head a bit.
"i know, but i wanted to... i also got you some pens i like to use to journal, or even draw" he pauses nervously "i thought maybe you'd like to try them"
"I'd love that hyune, thank you"
you nervously step forward and hug him. its not the first one you have given each other. and hopefully won't be the last.
you rest your head on his shoulder, and you feel him reluctantly close his arms around you. and once he does, you're engulfed in his warmth. the neck of his hoodie warms your cheek. or is it him?
his cologne surrounds you and sigh contently as he pulls you closer to him, his chin on your shoulder.
you can hear him breathing you in. and you wonder if he can hear you do the same.
you almost forget you're still at your entryway, door still wide open. until you hear the elevator being called and it breaks your trance.
you slowly pull away, and you can feel how warm your cheeks are. you just hope they aren't too red. if they are, he doesn't comment on it.
you welcome him inside, and offer him some new house slippers to change into. maybe you got him paint themed ones. with some flowers. just for him, in hopes of being only his whenever he comes over.
neither of you comment on it. but you can hear him muffle a chuckle when he notices them.
you unpack the gift bag and set the notebook and the pens near your laptop before guiding turning to him
he stands tall next to your couch. taking in your decorations. the paintings on the wall, the books on the shelves. mostly yours, but many from authors you admire and enjoy reading.
"i thought maybe we could eat on the couch, while watching a movie..."
you approach him slowly, taking him in. in your house. your space. he fits in so well. he looks peaceful. so at ease.
"anything we do is more than fine by me, I just want to spend time with you"
you never expect to feel this affected by him. or anyone for that matter.
but the way he looks at you, the way he talks to you. the way he talks about you. honestly takes your breath away.
you have no words for him. you can feel heat rising to your cheeks once again, and you can only smile shyly at him, avoiding his piercing gaze.
even though he protests and insists on helping you, you let him settle down on the couch and choose a movie of his liking while you go plate your dinner and bring it over to the living room.
you sit next to each other, close enough to feel his warmth radiating from his body and his cologne comforting you.
you try to pay attention to the movie. you really do.
but it's hard when the man you're falling for is sitting right next to you. enjoying your food, moaning at each bite. making that adorable crunched face. laughing at the funny scenes.
you've been caught staring at him a few times now. and each time you smile timidly and avert your attention back to the movie. slowly eating your food.
you can feel his eyes on you. and you're trying your hardest to not look back. you try to focus on the food and the movie, but he makes it so hard to do.
you try to steal a look from your peripheral vision but you're caught.
his giggles warm your chest and the way he hides his face behind his warm, soft hands.
you set your plate on the coffee table and take a sip of your wine. as you set the cup back down. he takes the opportunity to grab your hand and with the other guide your face so you can't hide from him.
the look in his eyes has you hold your breathing. pools of chocolate so intense you can't look away. you follow the movement of his eyes, going lower and lower on your face, until they stop at your lips. you look at his own plump lips, shimmering from him licking them clean, parting a bit as he takes in a shaky breath.
he cleans the corner your lips with his thumb, and pulls you closer to him. slowly. your noses touch and your eyelashes flutter.
you can feel your own heartbeat in your ears. all of him surrounds all your senses and it feels like your heart will beat itself out of your chest.
as impatient as you are, you close the distance between you two and you close your eyes as your lips touch his.
at first none of you move. but then, with one hand holding your cheek, and the other letting go of your hand and settling itself on your waist, he pulls you inevitably closer and deepens the kiss.
it's not rushed. it's slow. soft. you can taste remains of the wine on his lips.
your own hands shake with the need to touch something. anything. to ground yourself.
you fist his hoodie and you pull him closer, letting your hands travel up his torso to his neck. you can feel him shiver against your touch, goosebumps raising under you hands. one of your hands cups his cheek, while the other rests on the back of his neck, you run your fingers through the strays of hair there and hold on to his neck.
he moans shakily into the kiss, and the sound sends heat throughout your body.
you both pull away in need of breath, but none pulls entirely away. neither of you opening your eyes yet. foreheads resting against each other. hands not moving from their place as if they belonged there. needing the contact. the proximity. you take a deep breath and smile, you both laugh at the scene.
you hold his face in your hands and peck his lips a few more times before pulling away fully.
you try and take deep breaths to clear your mind. because right now it's all him. him. him.
he occupies every corner of your mind at the moment and it's dizzying.
and you made the mistake of looking at his lips again.

he giggles and falls forward onto you. holding you close. hiding his face on your neck.
you breathe him in and hold him close. running your fingers through his hair. playing with it.
you both stay there for a bit. you feel his breath on your neck, and for a moment you believe he has fallen asleep.
"i really, really like you... like I've never liked someone before" his voice sounds timid. small.
"i really, really like you too..." you whisper against his ear.
"...you really do?"
you hold his face and make him look at you. boba eyes stare back at you. pouting timidly. rosy cheeks warm. either from behind hidden against you or the conversation, you don't know.
"i really do hyune, wouldn't want to be here with anyone else"
you rub your thumb on his cheek and let the seriousness of your words sink in.
"let me be yours. only yours." he whispers.
"mine?"
"all yours, please? let me be your boyfriend?"
you smile widely and nod. he sighs in relief and pulls you into a kiss.
you stay cuddling on your couch all night. movie long forgotten but what's more important isnβt. you two. in each other's arms. in your own bubble.
