A/N: there were four parts of the story but I've decided to repost it in one peace and it turned out hella long
The atmosphere of this forest is eerie and mysterious. When I first stepped in it the day was bright but soon I found myself surrounded by a strange bluish glow coming from stones that are sticking out from the ground. Trees cover the sky so no sunlight can reach the ground. I wanted to turn back and go back home, but I couldn’t. Something was pulling me forward and its grip on me never loosen.
After walking around for quite a while, I found a lake so beautiful it was hard not to be bewitched by it. It has the same bluish glow and something magical about it. Magic is something really rare in my country since everyone can undo it with just a touch. And among my people, I am one of the strongest magic users. I can undo a spell with just a thought.
I made my way to the lake and bent to its surface. The moment I was about to touch it, I heard a noise and stood up ready to fight whoever was coming my way. The pendant on my neck became hot, burning my skin and warning me about the danger. I turned around, prepared to fight whatever comes my way. There was just a bunny in the bushes. I guess it's forest atmosphere made me so cautious. But the spell the lake put on me wore off and I continued to make my way through the forest. As I finally found the exit I saw a peaceful town. A lot of houses and people working in the fields. In the distance, I heard the noise of a city center. What I need may be there, so I gathered my courage to go further to this unknown place.
As I made my way to the city I saw that among commoners a lot of humans. That fact made me feel at ease. The city center itself was a huge place full of shops and other public places. It was also very busy and all kinds of people of all races walked past me. No one paid me any attention. I didn’t stand out here so my heart finally calmed down.
After asking a nice man on a street I was directed to the place I was looking for – a local pharmacy. It was locked with a note left on the door. It says to look for him in a pub. I had no idea where it was, so once again I asked a stranger for help. An old man was a bit inconsistent in his explanation so I got lost in a maze of streets. Somehow I ended up in the empty alley. I was about to go back to where I came from when I saw a girl with a strange gaze. It was empty as if she had no will. She was guided by a man whom I’d call shady. She was well dressed while he looked like a commoner. A bit more prim and proper one, maybe he works as an attendant for someone.
Moving instinctively, I walked up to them and touched the girl’s hand. The second I touched her she came alive and the consciousness returned to her eyes. She strangled from the man’s grip and her loud voice rang through an empty alley.
“Let go of me! I have to be with Jonah!” Her words made the man angry and he glared at me. I guess I just created some kind of trouble for him. He tried to grab her hand again but she escaped his arms and dashed in the direction they came from. Clicking his tongue a man grabbed my hand and pulled me after him. It took a second for me to realize that we were running after the girl.
“Let me go!” I yelled but he didn’t flinch.
“I don’t know what you’ve done but because of you the girl is on her way to the castle and you will have to explain to my lord why his spell wore off of her.” He replayed and pulled my hand harder.
I had to lift my dress with the other hand so I wouldn’t trip over it as we ran. The girl turned out to be quite fast and we lost sight of her. Nevertheless, the man continued to tug my hand, making me follow him. By the time we'd reached the castle I was out of breath and covered with sweat. How have I always ended up in trouble?
The man pulled me to the entrance. In the hall, there was a lot of noise as servants tried to stop the girl. She was yelling and struggling there, making most of the noise. My hand was finally released and I fell on the floor trying to catch my breath. My chest hurts so much, I never ran this fast and long in all my life.
“What’s going on here?” A clear, demanding voice with notes of irritation rang through the castle. A shiver ran down my spine as if responding to this voice. I looked up and saw the man with the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen standing at the top of the stairs. He was pretty far but I still can see him clearly and after a second I knew that he not only has the most beautiful eyes but also the most handsome face. Those eyes met mine for a second and moved on. Everyone froze and then in sync turned to face him. The girl however yet again screamed his name and ran upstairs to him. She hugged him furiously.
“What is she doing here?” he asked the man who dragged me here.
“I’m sorry, my lord, the spell wore off,” the man bowed deeply.
The man, who’s been called Jonah, pressed his full lips and looked at the happy girl. She smiled at him but he was cold. He took her by the chin making her look right into his eyes.
“Go back home and never come here again. Forget everything about me.” He said in a quiet yet commanding voice. I watched them trying to understand what’s going on, but I’ve never seen something like this. Is he a magician?
The girl released him and turned to leave the castle. She looked exactly the way I met her in the alley. So she was under his spell. For a long minute before she left the hall was enveloped in silence. Quite an uncomfortable one. Then all the servants except the man who dragged me here and Jonah returned to their work. Jonah walked to us with a frown.
“What happened? Explain,” his tone was demanding but even his angry face was heavenly beautiful. I found myself staring at him, not being able to look away.
“I was leading her home through the alley when this girl showed up. She did something that made the spell lift off of her.” He pointed at me. Once again Jonah’s eyes met mine. In an instant, I became hyper-aware of my position. I was in another city, not knowing the layout of streets, sitting on the floor of the castle of an angry handsome man who is some kind of magician.
“Stand up,” he commanded and I obeyed, my will just went somewhere not wanting to resist him. “Who are you? I’ve never seen you before.”
“I came from the town that lies on the other side of the Forbidden Forest. My name is MC.”
“What have you done to break my spell on that girl?”
Do I really have to answer? Will he even believe me? Will he punish me for breaking his spell? Is he even a human?
Lost in thoughts I forgot to replay and he got even angrier. He took a step my way.
“Answer my question!” he demanded and at the moment my will to fight returned and I finally was free from his charm.
“In my town, all the citizens can undo the magic,” I replied and held my head high. That’s right, his magic won’t work on me and I rested enough to make another run but this time as further away from here as I can.
“Why did you do it?” he looked a bit less angry and I guess that’s a curiosity I see in his eyes.
“She seemed strange to me and I wanted to make sure she is okay,” my answer didn’t really make him happier.
“Is everyone in your town so concerned with other’s well-being?” by his tone I knew that he wasn’t impressed.
“Yes, we care for each other,” I replied and a smile touched his lips but didn’t reach his eyes. It was hard to resist the power of his whole presence but I clenched my fists ready to fight him.
“You’ve caused me a lot of trouble. Don’t bother yourself to care for people you don’t know. Think about the consequences.”
“As if I knew what would happen! It’s your fault for putting her under the spell!” I was so mad that the fear I felt a moment ago was gone. “If you talked to her properly she would leave without you having to put a spell on her!”
“I talked with her! But all those women who claim that they are in love with me won’t give up even if I tell them that I hate them!” he frowned deeply and his handsome face grimaced. “You would never understand how I feel!”
“I wouldn’t even try! Who would want to understand a womanizer like you! Don’t make them fall in love with you in the first place!”
“It’s not my fault that they can’t resist my charms!” he looked a bit pleased as he said that. That jerk! He’s enjoying it!
“Get over yourself! Not every woman wants you!”
“Right in front of you!” I exclaimed and he raised his perfect eyebrow. “I don’t like you! Moreover, I want to punch you right into your damn face!”
He was taken aback by my declaration. But in a moment he regained his composure and smiled coldly.
“Let’s have a bet! If I make you fall for me in one week I won, if not, then you won,” he suggested.
“Why would I want to make a bet with you?” I frowned.
“If you win, I’ll grant one your wish, whatever it is,” a plain skink flashed before my inner sight, I heard his pained breathing.
“Can you cure people?” I asked, taking him by surprise.
“Sure thing. I’m a vampire, a bit of my blood can cure anything.”
“Anything,” I muttered under my breath. I can save him. Just a week and I can save him. That thought made me nod in determination. “I agree! If I win, you’ll give me your blood.”
Jonah smiled in satisfaction. “Okay, and if I win, you'll stay here with me for the rest of your life.”
“I won’t lose,” I replied and we grinned at each other but there was fire in our eyes.
Fearless. That was the first word that came to my mind when I saw her sitting on the floor. The commotion made me look away almost immediately. But when I came up to her and she faced me with no fear in her eyes, something deep inside of me demanded to take her. The sweet fragrance that enveloped her made me thirsty, though I drank from that other girl less than an hour ago. Her blood must be just as special as she is. The power to break spells. I’ve heard of it before but it was the first time I actually met someone with such ability. My vampire magic won’t work on her, so I had to find a way to make her stay. The bet was a spontaneous idea, but it worked. I saw that in her eyes, she agreed not out of lack of emotional control but because I possess something she desperately wants. I’d lie if I say that I don’t want to know who that person is, whom she wants to cure so badly that she agreed to stay in the vampire’s castle. I stood by the window, making myself look as unconcerned as I could. She was sitting near me, writing a letter to her family. She was pretty quick and soon I handed the paper to one of my attendants to deliver it. When I turned to face her, she was looking outside at the cloudy sky. Looks like it’s going to rain any moment.
“I’ll show you to your room,” I said and left the room. She hurried after me but didn’t try to walk beside me, staying behind the whole time. She wasn’t afraid of me, I felt it and I heard her steady heartbeat. A bit anxious maybe, but not scared for sure.
“Am I allowed to leave the castle?” a sudden question made me look at her. When our eyes met I yet again felt that urge to bite her. I can make her my belonging with just one bit but for some reason, I didn’t dare to do that.
“Want to leave already?” I tried to tease her and frowned at me. Her face is so honest, every emotion shows up immediately.
“I want to see the city before I return home with your blood as a prize,” she smiled confidently and I barely managed not to smile in response.
“You can but you have to take a guard with you and return to the castle before sunset,” she nodded but I could see that she wanted to argue. Well, I wouldn’t change any of the conditions even if she begged for it. This city is huge and really dangerous for someone like her. She’d be easy prey.
We reached the guest room and I opened the door for her. She stepped inside and curiously looked around. When she saw the beautiful cozy room her eyes sparkled but she tried to hide it from me. Such a funny girl.
“Someone will come to get you when it’s time to have dinner,” I informed her and she nodded. I closed the door and returned to my office. To get the girl out of my mind I tried to concentrate on my work, but I found myself looking forward to our dinner together.
Somehow I stayed in my office till one of the servants came to announce that the dinner was served. I put away my work and went straight to the dining room. The fireplace made the room warm and relaxing. I took my seat and waited for MC to show up. She stormed into the room as furious as could be and I chuckled at her. Her face was red from anger and shyness.
“Why the hell did they make me wear that hell you call dress?” complained the girl and I looked at her from head to toe. Navy-blue dress with daring cleavage looked surprisingly good on her. Her tender body, especially her neck, looked quite appealing. I imagined what it’d be like to bite her right now and the fire inside of me ignited twice as hard.
“Why are you complaining? You look not half bad,” I took a sip of wine to suppress my desire for her. She grimaced at me, looking like she’d punch me if I wasn’t a vampire and she is just a mare human.
She took a seat on the opposite side of the table. Still displeased, she grabbed a knife and a fork and began her dinner. I followed her example but for some reason, it wasn’t the food that tasted good but the sight of her eating in front of me. None of us attempted to break the silence. Servants renewed our glasses with wine and I drank a lot to contain myself. After we finished our meal, I hurried to my room, ordering to bring me someone, to feed off. Usually, I’d be satisfied for a few days, but she awakened a thirst in me. I could have easily drunk from MC but I’m sure that she would escape if I tried to bite her.
A girl my attendant brought for me was smiling as if I just proposed to her but I didn’t care. I needed blood. Her warm body in my hand didn’t feel quite right, and the taste of her couldn’t satisfy me, but I ignored the urge to push her away. I need to do that. Loud moans that she let out irritated so I let go of her as soon as I had enough. She smiled and looked at me with those dreamy eyes. Just like all the rest. They fall for me so easily.
“Go home,” I ordered, putting a spell on her. She stopped smiling and slowly walked away. Dark night enveloped the city and I prepared myself for the tough week of not being able to satisfy myself. But as soon as MC falls for me, I’ll have plenty of her. And she’ll bag me to have more. That thought made me smile.
The next morning I got to work before going to visit MC. But to my surprise, I spotted her in the garden. She was running around with a few of my hunting dogs in the garden. Her silky hair danced in the wind and she smiled so beautifully that I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Playing like a child she was so different from all the women I know. At some point, she got tired and sat on the ground. Just like that! In a fancy dress, my servants made her wear it today. I’d say it’s a waste of a good dress, but sitting like that in that bright yellow outfit, she reminded me of the sun. Dogs surrounded her and she let them lick her face while wiggling their tales like crazy. That was quite a sight so I lost track of time.
“My lord,” the voice of my attendant made me turn away from the window and return to my dark office. Strange, it’s the first time I found this room dark.
I had to go back to work, but my mind was filled with MC’s sunny smile.
After lunch, I dressed a bit more casually and went to find MC. She wasn’t in her room and I had to stop the maid to ask where she was.
“She is in the stables,” the maid replied and rushed to proceed with her duties.
As surprised as I was, I went to where MC had to be. And she was there, chatting happily with a stableman. Her yellow dress looked out of place here but she doesn’t seem to care. She patted my favorite horse and asked a lot of questions like what are we feeding them with, how do we train them, and stuff. The man was happy to answer to someone who took a genuine interest in his job. I observed them for a few moments. Girls such as MC wouldn’t fall for chip tricks and I’ll never be able to buy her love. She is too stubborn and taking into consideration her sitting on the ground in the dresses I provide her with, she doesn’t care about money and pretty stuff most women would die for.
A plan in my head appeared out of nowhere but I liked it. I cleared my throat and both turned to me. Stableman bowed deeply, while MC straightened her back looking at me as if she owned this place. It made me smile.
“I was looking for you,” I announced and she seemed a bit surprised but tried to hide it.
“What for?” She is suspicious of me and I’m pretty sure she thinks that I’ll try to buy her love. Well, you’ll be surprised!
“I want to take a horseback ride and I want you to make me a company,” her eyes went wide and she almost smiled but again tried to hide her feelings from me.
“Well, if you insist,” is she trying to play it cool? I held back an amused laugh and nodded to the stableman. He immediately got to work and soon we had two horses ready for a ride. I let MC take my favorite stallion, which she seems to take a liking to. To my surprise, she didn’t need any help climbing a horse and looked quite confident. Despite wearing a fancy dress she was sitting in the saddle astride, exposing to me her legs. Usually, I'd find it vulgar but in this case, I was intrigued.
We rode to the edge of the forest and let our horses slowly pace around the city. I struggled to find a topic to make her tell me more about herself. But she spoke up first.
“I saw a girl leaving the castle yesterday night,” she stared at her hands. “Did you feed off of her?”
“Yes,” I never lie and I won’t do it even to make her fall for me. “I need blood to live. If I don’t drink it I may die or go berserk until I have enough.” She shivered at my reply. How can she be so brave and gentle in her heart at the same time?
“Does it hurt when you bite them?” it’s obvious enough that she is asking about girls' feelings, not mine.
“No,” she finally looked at me, “it feels good that’s why they always come back for more. That pleasure makes them fall for me.”
“I won’t let you do this to me,” she frowned at me.
“I wasn’t going to,” I smirked, and her look became skeptical, “it’d be too easy. I have enough charms to make you lose your head without biting you.” My confident words made her roll her eyes. Even irritated, she looked beautiful.
“Can you be any more annoying?” rhetorical question and I just smiled at her. I felt strangely calm around her despite the hunger I constantly fight around her.
“Who taught you to ride a horse?” I have a lot more questions but most of them are too personal for her to answer right now. As much as I wanted to know more about her I didn’t want her to feel like I’m invading her private space.
“My dad,” a tender smile appeared on her face unconsciously but it was the warmest smile she's ever shown around me. “He taught me a lot of things when I was little.” I imagined how cute she was as a kid and smiled. But the sadness in her eyes made me understand that the next question will be painful. The man is probably dead so I changed the topic.
“Is there anything you enjoy doing?”
“Want to use it against me?” she smirked. I wasn’t sure if she was serious about her assumption but she spoke up before I had time to explain myself. “There are a lot of small things. I like horseback riding, reading books, listening to music, and walking in the rain. That kind of stuff.”
“Sounds nice,” I replied, planning on using something from the list.
“What about you?” her question surprised me, but I didn’t let it show on my face.
“After living for centuries there is not much left to love,” why am I opening my heart? “I love to read a good book, play the piano, and dance. But that’s more of a habit I guess. When I was young I loved to spend time with my younger brother. We’d spend the whole day playing around, competing with each other at fencing.” Sweet memories of our childhood with Luka brought a bittersweet taste. I miss times when everything was much simpler.
“He ran away from home. I’ve tried so many times to return him but he’s too stubborn so I let him do as he wishes.”
“You really miss him,” MC’s voice was filled with sympathy.
“We both have our lives and have to live them without regrets. Even with an extended lifespan, you can’t change a lot of things. You, humans, live as if you’re afraid to be late, but for vampires, we have hundreds of years to regret a lot of things. And they never go away even if you can't do anything anymore.”
“Not spending more time with those who already died. I have a lot of good memories, but with time it feels like not enough. There is so much more people can do, but we never think of it before it's too late to change anything.” The silence between us for once wasn’t uncomfortable. MC got lost in her thoughts. I watched her as we returned to the castle. I immediately was trapped by my secretary and lost the opportunity to say something more to MC before she left. I had a feeling my words touched her heartstrings and I gave her some alone time to think.
The rest of the day was quite busy, I walked around the castle giving orders. My old good friend is planning on visiting me so I have to throw a ball on that occasion. It’s a long-established tradition and I can’t ignore it because of a woman. Lancelot is the only remaining friend of mine. The person who supported me at all times. Little did I know that a pair of thoughtful eyes were watching me from afar.
Dinner went quietly, I was tired and, moreover, I felt thirsty again. With MC here I couldn’t stop wanting her. I can’t feed off of her and I don’t want any other girl. My hunger grew too much and I could kill if I didn't keep myself under control.
After finishing my meal I hurried to my bedroom where a girl from town was already waiting for me. I closed my eyes and imagined MC while drinking. I wasn't even half satisfied but I had to let go before it’s too late. The girl left after I cast a spell on her. I guess I was mistaken when I made that deal with MC. By the end of the week, I can lose to my hunger and kill her.
After we got back from our ride Jonah was really busy and I took my time taking in his words. They touched me deeply and made me think of my family and the patients I left in my hometown. I miss them now. We don’t have an extended lifespan like vampires and I felt the urge to spend more time with people I care about.
Dinner was quiet. I was expecting Jonah to use dinner time to ask me more questions or to make a move, but he looked so tired and didn’t say a word to me. Not that I care that much, but I somehow felt betrayed. Anyway, the less time we spend together the better. That way I for sure won’t fall in love with him.
Jonah finished his meal and rushed out of the room as if it was on fire. What’s wrong with him? Maybe he is that tired that he wants to go to bed as soon as possible? I observed him after our return and came to understand that he has a lot of work to do here. His castle is beautiful and well maintained. All servants do their job and no one ever complained about it being too hard.
As I walked to my room I spotted two maids whispering about something.
“Do you think he is losing control?” asked the other one.
“It’s not like Master Jonah. He is pretty young for a vampire.”
“I hope he’ll be okay,” the worry in her voice made me frown. What are they talking about?
Just as I was about to approach them a girl I never saw around here left one of the rooms. The look on her face was as if she was under Jonah’s spell. Could it be that Jonah fed for the second time today? Is that what they are talking about? So it’s not normal? Questions built up in my head and I really wanted to know answers. But the maids left and I lost my chance to question them. I can ask Jonah himself but for some reason, I couldn’t make myself do it. In six days I’ll leave this place and won’t ever go back. It’s not my business how many girls he feeds off.
I locked myself in my temporary room and lay on the bed. To my annoyance, Jonah wouldn’t leave my thoughts. Trapped in my head he was the last thing on my mind as I fell asleep so no wonder I dreamed of him.
The next day he was just as busy. All morning he was cooped in his office and left only when lunch was served.
“I have a bit more work to do, but I hope to spend the evening together,” was the first thing he said to me when he entered the dining room. I just nodded to his words. Not that I have something else to do anyway. Also, I've decided to enjoy my time here since I doubt I'll have a chance to live in a castle again.
Under his eyes were barely noticeable dark circles that I’m pretty sure he didn’t have before. Seems like he is working a bit too much. I wanted to interrogate him but waited till we met in the garden in the evening. He was standing by the rose bush. White roses look reddish in the sunset light. I took a few steps towards Jonah. The thoughtful look on his face made me silent. There is so much I want to know but for some reason, I didn’t dare to invade his space. Finally, he noticed me and smiled.
“You look good in that color,” he complimented my light blue dress and I felt a bit easier. He looks just like always.
“You’ve been so busy lately,” I started from afar.
“Don’t tell me you want to spend more time with me,” he teased me but I sensed there is more to it than just his business. “Old friend of mine is coming and I’m going to throw a ball.”
“In five days.” So a ball will take place on my last night here. “It won’t be huge. A small gathering of fellow aristocrats.”
“You'll have a chance to dance,” I said before thinking. Now he knows that I remembered that he loves to dance.
“If only you granted me a pleasure to have you as my dance partner,” he looked at me with that charming smile of his.
“Not a chance!” I replied a bit too harshly. Jonah raised an eyebrow. “Sorry, but I can’t dance.” I blushed, confessing my lack of skills.
“I can teach you,” he suggested as if it’s something trivial for him. I thought about it for a few moments. But Jonah lost his patience before I came up with a replay. He outstretched his hand, remaining at a respectful distance from me.
Hesitantly I placed my palm in his. His big cold hand squeezed mine so gently that my heart skipped a bit. His other hand fell on my waist and suddenly we were closer than ever before. With graceful moves, he led me and in no time we were dancing. Without music, in the last rays of the sun. I felt as if someone cast a spell on me, though it is impossible.
I looked at my feet not to step on Jonah’s leg, but his long fingers hooked up my chin making me meet his eyes. I was bewitched by their beauty. Maybe it’s not crazy that all those women fell for him. He is the most handsome man I’ve ever met. We continued to dance till the sun completely set and then we came to a halt. All of it was so natural and left me with an unknown feeling inside. A fathom sensation of his hands remained with me after he let go of me and took a step back, respecting my private space.
“You’re a great dance partner,” his voice broke the silence and the spell I slowly broke down. I remember that he is rude and super confident, but at times like this, I feel as if he is not that bad. His manners, his grace, and his speech – all of it makes me realize just how much of a nobleman he is.
I won’t stay here. I need Jonah’s blood to cure him. And no matter how charming Jonah is, I can’t allow myself to lose this bet. This one time I won’t let myself lose.
“You seem tired,” his caring voice painfully echoed in my heart. I nodded and let him escort me to my room. We said our goodbyes and I promised myself not to get any closer to this man.
In the morning I've decided to visit the city but the dark grey sky was threatening to pour at any moment. I love rain but I have no desire to get wet while looking for a doctor to help me.
I dressed and stopped by a dining room. Jonah already finished with his breakfast and got to work. I took this chance to eat in peace. But as soon as I heard first raindrops hitting windows Jonah stormed into the room and by the hand drugged me out of the castle.
“Are you crazy?” I screamed while getting wet. His damp hair stuck to his face making him look particularly good. His usual cold mask was lost and he smiled like a child.
“You said you love walking in the rain,” he smiled widely and I couldn’t make myself stay angry at him. I looked up at the sky letting rain flow down my face. Soon enough my clothes were completely wet as Jonah’s. He looked pleased with himself as he stared at me with a tender smile.
“Stop staring,” I blushed but he didn’t flinch.
“You look beautiful like that,” he replied and my heartbeat skyrocketed. Such words said with that smile are a forbidden combo!
I shoved his shoulder as hard as I could but yet again he didn’t flinch. Pouting at him, I turned around and walked away. I wasn’t going to return to the castle, I enjoyed the warm raindrops on my skin. He followed me and all of a sudden tugged a ribbon I tied my hair with. My hair flowed down my spine and the ribbon remained in his hand. I turned to him in a daze. A mischievous smile on that handsome face of his made me blush.
"What do you think you are doing?" I was furious because of my own reaction.
"Give it back!" I tried to snap it back. He raised his hand and then started to run away from me. God knows why I followed. We ran around the garden like two little kids. He laughed and it was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. "It's not funny!"
He laughed hard and stopped. I didn't have time to react and bumped into him. I fell into his arms and immediately was trapped by them. He is strong but the way he held me was way too gentle as if he was afraid to break me. Jonah's sweet fragrance enveloped me and for a second I gave in and closed my eyes, enjoying his ephemeral warmth. But his fast heartbeat returned me to reality. We have a bet. He wants me to lose and stay there with him. But I... I can't. I have him waiting for me. I gently pushed him away and avoided looking into his eyes. The rain stopped and, thank God, I didn't have to say anything, for one of the servants called out to Jonah. He had to return to his duties as an owner of the castle and I hurried back to my room.
I took a long relaxing bath and wanted to lay in bed for some time, but someone knocked on my door. Jonah changed his clothes to a simple shirt and pants looking more like a man, but still a noble one. He smiled apologetically.
"Sorry for getting you to soak in the rain, I thought you would enjoy it," I couldn't be angry even if I desperately wanted to.
"It's okay," I bit my lip and immediately noticed how a flame sparkled in his eyes after seeing it. "I had fun."
"Glad to hear it," he smiled at me, "mind keeping me company a bit longer?"
He had something on his mind and I was curious. After all, it's okay to spend some good time here before going back. I can have fun with Jonah without falling in love. Just like with my little brother. So I nodded and he led me to someplace in the castle. I haven't been to this part of the castle yet. There was a huge door and a library behind it. Jonah let me in first and I gasped at the sight of so many books.
"You told me that you like reading so go ahead," he gestured to me to pick any book that strikes my interest.
"Usually I read aloud to my little brother," why am I telling him this? I just felt secure to tell him for some reason.
"I used to read to my brother too," his nostalgic smile somehow made my heart squeeze.
After picking a random book I flipped pages. "My brother is sick." My confession made him freeze. I didn't dare to look up.
"That's what you need my blood for," he guessed right and I nodded. "I see." For a moment I heard a hint of pain and looked up at his face but his expression became a mask again. He doesn't want me to see his feelings. Why?
Maybe I stared at him too intently, he turned away from me and pretended to inspect books on the shelf. Even though he tried I still sensed his emotions. He has a brother too, he understands my feelings. I couldn't make myself say anything more so I just walked to the huge window and sat on the sofa by it. Jonah followed me still deep in his thoughts. The rest of the day that stiff expression didn't leave his face and I was afraid to bother him. His almond gold eyes fell on me from time to time but as I met his gaze he averted it immediately. For some reason, that troubled me.
Jonah didn't show up for dinner and it took all my willpower not to go and ask him what happened. I ate and went straight to my room. One of the doors that I passed on my way wasn't closed and I heard voices of the people in there. Jonah was among them.
"My lord, you have to feed off someone or you will get too weak," that was Jonah's personal attendant.
"I know but I can't," Jonah's voice was pained, it echoed in my head. "Their blood can't satisfy me. I risk killing a girl in this state."
"But if you don't drink blood you'd die!" The man was so worried.
"Don't worry, in four days I'll go back to normal," he didn't sound relieved. On the contrary, those words caused him more pain.
I returned to my room unable to bear listening to his voice anymore and then it hit me. I'll leave the castle in four days! So he'll be okay after I go? Doesn't he plan to keep me here? And now he is assured that I'll leave. What happened to him? Is that because of my sick brother? That thought made my heart go crazy in my chest. So he sympathizes with me and because of that, he changed his decision. Then why doesn't he release me now? Does he want me to stay beside him? And... Why do I feel like I don't really want to leave him?
The next day was even busier and I didn’t dare to ask someone to go with me to the town. But staying in this castle alone with my thoughts was insufferable. I dressed up and left the castle with a note that I’m going to check the local pharmacy and then be back. This time I was luckier and the owner of the pharmacy was there. He looked a bit pale and I’m pretty sure it’s because of a hangover. The smell of alcohol was too strong.
“Didn’t I put up a sign that we are closed?” he asked, looking at me.
“You didn’t,” I replied. I pitied him, but I needed his help so I remained here despite his oblivious desire to be left alone to cure his headache. “I’m a doctor from another city and I came here to ask if you know how to cure a disease. My brother can’t breathe without pain and nothing helps.”
Maybe my desperation reached him because he didn’t ask me to get out. He frowned and reached for some book on the shelf. “Tell me more about his symptoms.” As I talked his frown deepened and a dark shadow fell on his face.
“Do you know what it is?” I asked and he nodded.
“He doesn’t have much time left,” those words made me freeze. “In a few days, he’ll lose the ability to breathe and die.”
“How can I save him?” I panicked and was about to lose my sanity in desperation. He put his hand on my shoulder to calm me down.
“There is no herb or potion that can help at this point. We need a miracle.”
“Vampire's blood,” I murmured but he heard me.
“It can save your brother but it’s not an easy task to get it.”
“I can get it but only in two days,” I told a man my story. He just nodded.
“Your brother may not have that much time,” desperation covered me again like a wave, leaving me breathless and scared. “We can try to slow it down but I can’t promise more than a day.” A small ray of hope. I’d never let a chance to save my brother slip away. Even as tiny as this one. I nodded firmly and the doctor asked me to help him. We spent a whole day making a potion. When we finally finished I was completely worn out but happy. I said my goodbyes to the doctor and hurried to go back to the castle to ask Jonah to send it to my home.
The bright moon shone upon me as I made my way back. The streets were eerie quiet and I couldn’t help but quicken my pace. As I turned around the corner I spotted a few men not far from here. I got a bad feeling and turned back to find another path. But to my bad luck, they saw me and followed. I tried to run away but one of them caught me in seconds and pinned me against the wall. Strong arms painfully squeezed my wrists holding them above my head. Those men are not humans. I could see it in their eyes as they eyed me from head to toe. My heartbeat fastened but I didn’t know what to do, my body just froze.
“Look who we got here!” said one of them.
“She seems delicious,” commented the other one. I’m going to be a dinner?! The fear awakened my body and I struggled to free myself from the grip. I can’t die now! I just got a chance to save my dear brother, I can’t die before I help him!
“Let me go!” I screamed but they only laughed at me. “Jonah!”
I don’t know why I called for him. But as soon as his name escaped my lips the grip on my hands disappeared and I was free. In a moment both men were laying on the ground. I looked at the figure of my rescuer. His golden eyes sparkled in the moonlight but something in them scared me even more than those two. He looked at me like a hungry wolf would look at its prey.
“Jonah,” I whispered his name, the carnival was gone and I recognized my noble savior. He took a step towards me and put me in a tight embrace. His sweet fragrance enveloped me, making me feel safe and warm. I squeezed his jacket on his chest and buried my face in the nape of his neck. His heart was beating like crazy and it made me realize just how much he cared for me.
“When you haven’t returned to the castle I got scared that something bad happened to you,” his voice was pained as if he was fighting with some kind of urge inside of him.
“I’m so sorry,” his grip tightened for a moment before he realized me.
“I'll let you explain yourself later,” he took my hand and led me back to his castle. The tone of his voice told me that I’ll be scolded as soon as we’re back, but I was so relieved to see him and be under his protection that I didn’t mind listening to his lectures. But in the end, no one scolded me. Jonah commanded servants to feed me and make me some tea.
“Jonah, wait!” I stopped him as he tried to leave me by the dining room. “Can you do me a favor?” I held out a bottle with a potion that we made today. “Can you send it to my family, please?”
He nodded and went away. I felt that something was wrong but couldn’t figure out what it was. In the end, I ate my dinner and went to my room. Despite being tired I couldn't fall asleep and after tossing and turning for almost an hour I went wandering around the castle. As I headed to the library I heard the music. Someone was playing the guitar and I got curious. I'm sure that it's Jonah playing so I stood behind the door listening, too afraid to disturb him.
Affection. For a vampire, there is nothing worse than that. Especially if we can't be with the one we're attracted to. The hunger multiples and at some point it becomes insufferable. The stronger the love the more we want to feed off our beloved.
My feelings towards MC are way too strong for me to ignore it or try to feed on another girl. All I want is MC, her blood, her body, her everything. It's so precious to me that I barely contain myself when she is around. Her scent alone can drive me crazy. And I knew from the very beginning that I'll fall in love with her. The second my eyes landed on her I knew that she would be the one and I wasn't mistaken. I find it easy to be with her. I love the sound of her voice and her laughter, her brassiness, and her courage. I love the way her eyes spark when she reads a book and plays with my dogs, how she is so kind and considerate. She is way more special than she thinks she is. It's not her power that makes her unique but the way she lives her life. I love the person that so suddenly stormed into my life like I've never loved before and I won't ever love someone again. Today, when she didn't come back from town I got so scared. I've been terrified by the thought of her being hurt. I went looking for her and when I saw those jerks harassing her I lost all my self-control. I finished them in a few seconds but wasn't able to calm down till she called my name. Her voice reminded me that she is weak and frightened, and right now I was the one scaring her. I don't want her to fear me. I took her in my arms to hide the agony I was in. I was scared and relieved at the same time. My hunger for her grew stronger but I can bear it because forcing her to feed me would hurt us both.
Not being able to fall asleep due to my hunger, I've decided to play the guitar. Luka used to join me and played his violin. Playing alone wasn't even half that soothing as it was with Luka. Nevertheless, I wanted to do something to distract myself from MC. Strings danced under my fingers and the sound they were making was filled with my feelings.
Suddenly I felt her presence. She was standing right behind the door and I could hear her quick heartbeat.
"Come in already," I said and her heart skyrocketed. She hesitantly opened the door and stepped on it. She was still dressed, guess she has trouble falling asleep too.
"I didn't want to spy on you," she said looking awkwardly at her feet. "I just..."
"You don't have to explain yourself," I stopped playing and she finally met my gaze. "It doesn't matter what brought you here, I'm just glad to have your company." In the dim moonlight, I still saw how her cheeks turned red at my words. She is just too adorable. To distract me from those thoughts I started playing again. MC hesitated for a moment before placing herself in the armchair next to me. She listened without saying anything and I just knew that she's enjoying the sound of the guitar. I wish she could hear my and Luka's duet.
"When you said that you like to play the piano I couldn't even think that you can play any other instrument too," she said all of a sudden.
"It depends on my mood. Right now I'm in the mood for guitar," I replied and MC nodded. Her heartbeat calmed a bit and she relaxed, tucking her legs underneath her body. Somewhat about her pose made me more relaxed. We spent a few more hours, me playing and her listening. At last, she was dozing off. Whatever was keeping her awake wasn't bothering her anymore. I put away the guitar the moment she was fast asleep. I took her in my arms and headed towards her room. Holding her so close to me I felt like I slowly lost control. I gently placed her on her bed and sat beside her. My hand as if on its own will caressed her soft cheek then traced down to her neck. So warm. Her steady pulse made me want her so badly that it hurts. I leaned and kissed her forehead.
"You have no idea how much I don't want you to leave me," I whispered, brushing my lips against hers. I pulled myself away from her and left the room. If I stayed here any longer I'd not be able to stop myself from biting her. How am I supposed to let her go? I know that she wants to go back home to people she cares about. And she has a sick brother. If I was in her shoes I'd do anything for Luka. I wouldn't hesitate to put myself in danger or even commit murder to save him. But letting her go means never seeing her again and it causes my heart to ache. I love her. I barely know he0r but I already know that she is the only girl I'll ever hold in my heart. That's when being a vampire and living for centuries is a struggle. But keeping her here will make her lose everything else and I won't be able to bear to see her in tears. The decision is painful but right. Doesn't matter if she falls for me or not, I'll make her leave. In my room I took an empty bottle that once contained my favorite perfume and cut my wrist with my fangs, filling the bottle with blood.
To make myself fall asleep I finished a bottle of wine. In the morning I was looking better, dark circles were gone after normal sleep, but the thirst was insufferable so I drank more alcohol to suppress it.
All the preparation for Lance's arrival and the ball that follows are done and I just waited for my old friend to arrive. He never makes me wait for too long and arrives right before lunch. I've ordered to cook a whole feast for us.
Lancelot hasn't changed a bit and the moment I saw him I felt way better. A friendly face made me forget about all the thoughts I was agonizing over yesterday. Though his face was just as cold as always, it still seemed warm and kind to me. Knowing him for a few hundred years taught me to see past it.
"You seem tired," was the first thing he said to me.
"A lot happened," I replied and hugged him. For a moment he lost his mask but quickly placed it back.
"You're much weaker than the last time I saw you," I pressed my lips together not knowing where to start. Luckily one of the maids was passing by.
"Call MC here." She bowed and I met Lance's intense gaze.
"Something is telling me that that MC is the reason you are in that state." I just sighed before nodding. I don't have to explain anything I guess. MC showed up in a few minutes. She was a bit wary of Lancelot as for him he studied her for a moment and then turned his attention to me waiting for a formal introduction.
“Lancelot, allow me to introduce you MC, she is a guest of mine. MC, it’s my good friend – Lancelot Kingsley.” Lance bowed his head slightly and she lifted her skirt in courtesy.
“It's nice to meet you,” MC said, feeling slightly uncomfortable under his intense gaze.
“The pleasure is mine,” Lance's voice was quite indifferent but something glittered in his eyes. I guess he added all the parts together already.
"Shall we have a walk?" I suggested and both of them nodded. The conversation wasn't going as smoothly as I'd hoped to. MC was tense and Lance seemed to be lost in his thoughts. We discussed all the changes and events that happened since our last get-together about ten years ago. But for us immortals, ten years is nothing, time flew by but I saw how MC stared at us in astonishment. Once again I was reminded of how short her life is. She should spend it with her dearest, not locked away in the castle. At some point, MC stopped.
"Excuse me but I have a headache, I'll rest in my room till lunch." She didn't wait for my response and walked away way too rashly. Lance followed her with his gaze.
"I think I know what's happening here but I'd like to hear it from you."
"She came from another city to find a cure for her brother. We had a bet, if I win she stays here, and if she wins I'll give her my blood." He nodded.
"Judging by the way you look at her you won't make her confess." He's just as sharp as always.
“She will leave tomorrow."
“Maybe it’s for the better?” Lancelot tried to cheer me up in his own way. “She is human anyway. She won’t live as long as you.” He is right. Even if she stays she'll eventually die from old age. “I'd suggest you turn her into a vampire such as yourself, but you’ll never do something like that, don’t you?”
“How can I take her precious mortality from her? She should live a happy life and die just like everyone.”
“Won’t you regret letting her go?” he knew the answer but I replied anyway.
“I sure will, but I don’t want to make her stay. Staying with me would mean abandoning all the people she cares about. It’s a big sacrifice.”
The night fell upon the city and the ball started. As Jonah said there weren't a lot of guests but still it was crowded. I didn't want to go there but maids prepared a gorgeous gown for me and helped me put it on. I looked like a noblewoman like the rest of the people gathered here. I entered the ballroom and all the gazes fell on me. I felt like running away and locking myself into my room but then I noticed Jonah and the sight of him stole my breath away. He looked just like a prince from a fairytale. I could see how other women stared at him, they struggled to get his attention but his eyes were on me as I made my way through the room to where he waited for me. As I stood right in front of him I felt my heart racing.
“You look beautiful,” he said and I blushed. Butterflies filled my belly and I tried so hard to ignore the feeling.
“Thank you,” I replied and he slightly bowed to me while outstretching his hand.
“May I have this dance with you?” I bit my lip and placed my hand into his. I was nervous since I’ve danced only once and it was that time in the garden without music with Jonah. He might have sensed my uneasiness as he smiled. “Just imagine that we are all alone here. Just you and me,” I nodded. Jonah placed his free hand on my waist and all of a sudden we were so close. His hands were as cold as usual but I was already used to it and didn’t mind at all. We danced through the room while looking each other in the eyes. Jonah’s almond gold eyes sparkled and it made me forget where we were, I even stopped to pay attention to the music letting him lead me.
"MC, there is something I want to tell you," his tone was serious and my heart raced. I have no idea why I am so nervous. He let me to the balcony where we were all alone. "I've been thinking about it a lot and I've decided to cancel our bet."
"But why?" That wasn't the question I had to ask but the one I wanted to know the answer to. I was going to lie to him about my feelings but he decided to cancel everything just like that. His slender fingers caressed my cheek and felt my blood rushing to the place where he touched me.
"I care about you and that's why I'm giving you this." He took a small bottle out of his pocket and gave it to me. "It's my blood. A drop can cure your brother. You can use it as you wish." He tried to hide pain and loneliness but I still heard them in his voice. I felt the urge to hug him, to tell him that I love him, but the cold glass reminded me why I came here in the first place.
"Thank you," that was all I managed to say without bursting into tears.
"The carriage that will take you home is waiting by the gate. I bet you want to heal your brother as soon as possible." The tenderness of his touch and affection in his eyes made me lose my cool. I grabbed him in my hands and kissed him. He responded immediately pressing me against his solid chest.
Just as suddenly as I kissed him he pushed me away. He covered his mouth with his hand.
"You should go," his voice was hoarse and painful. Once again I saw that dangerous glittering in his eyes and I was scared. Only now I understood that he craved my blood. It must be hard for him to be this close to me. I bit my lip and after a moment of hesitation, I ran away. I rushed to the gate where the carriage waited for me, hopped in, and left the castle. By the morning I was finally home. My mom greeted me with a smile and hugged me. She looked in surprise at my fancy dress.
"Jonah gave it to me," I replied, leaving her more puzzled than she already was. But right now wasn't the time to tell her about my adventures. I need to help my precious little brother first. He was laying on the bed, so pale and weak that my heart ached. I took the bottle with blood out of my purse.
"It will heal you," I said and helped him make a tiny sip. In mere minutes color returned to his face and he sat up. "How is that possible?" He asked and I smiled.
"One kind vampire gave me his blood so I can heal you."
"Vampire?" He was shocked and I wished he met Jonah and saw just how kind and righteous he is.
"Yes, I'll tell you about him after you eat your breakfast."
As promised I told my family my story and everything about Jonah. My brother was impressed and beyond grateful for the blood that cured him. But being the kid he was he didn't dwell on it for too long. He ran out to meet his friends and villagers and announce the return of his good health. On the other hand, mom was more perceptive and when the kid left us alone she took my hand in hers.
"MC, you love him, don't you?" I looked her in the eyes and nodded. "The way you talk about him makes it clear as day that you care about him a lot. And judging by your story he does too."
"It doesn't matter anymore," I replied. I left him and I can't just go back.
"You should go back to him," her words made me look at her in a daze. "MC, you'll never forget about him. And you'll regret not giving your feelings a chance. Your dad died before me and I miss him, but the time we've spent together was the best time of my life. And you should have such a time of your life too."
My family saw me off and I traveled my way back to the vampire’s castle. Servants were surprised but happy to see me. I looked up and in the window saw Jonah looking into the sky. He didn't notice me at first but when our eyes met he looked astonished. I rushed inside and we met halfway. I threw myself into his hands and hugged him close to me.
"Why did you come back?" He asked in a low voice.
"Because you won our bet," he squeezed me harder. "I love you, Jonah," I muttered in his chest, feeling his fast heartbeat.
All of a sudden he pulled away from me. Now I knew that he craves me and I wasn't scared of him anymore. I encircled his torso, refusing to let go.
"Please, MC, I don't want to hurt you," he begged me but I've made up my mind.
"You won't," looked up and found his gaze. "I want you to bite me, Jonah."
"MC..."He muttered and hooked up my legs, sweeping me off of my feet, holding me securely in his strong arms, and carried me to my room. He placed me on my bed and climbed on top of me. Once again he hesitated and I pulled him closer. He kissed my neck and a jolt ran throughout my body. A sharp pain lasted for a second before pleasure filled me. I moaned his name as he drank my blood hungrily. I don't know if he had enough or just didn't want to hurt me but he pulled away leaking a bite mark.
"I love you," he whispered in my neck. "I love you so much." He squeezed me in his arms and I did the same.
"I love you too," I inhaled his scent finally feeling at ease. "And won't ever leave your side."
"I won't let you go. My entirety belongs to you."
