SFW #12: “He loves you, you know? He’s just afraid of admitting it.” | Hawks (Takami Keigo)
A sigh escaped your lips. It was such a beautiful night and there was more than one reason to celebrate it than this just being a simple and beautiful, starry night. The heroes succeeded in yet another battle against the League, the nomus they brought along with them were tough, people were hurt and parts of the city were destroyed as well, but in the end, you were all safe again thanks to the heroes and nonetheless thanks to Hawks who had selflessly decided to fly all the way over to this part of the city to help in the fight. You were working in the rescue unit in your agency as always and were lucky that your ways have crossed more than once now with such a handsome and talented man as he was. And well, it was also fair to say that he had stolen your heart. You know he would never feel the same with how occupied he must be, but it was nice to dream right?.
A hand on your shoulder brought you back from your thoughts. “He loves you, you know?”
“Eh?” you turned to face Miruko, the female hero grinning ever so teasingly as she nodded in her colleague's direction. Keigo was currently sitting at the bar, looking at you, his hand laid on his cheek, arm propped up as he dreamily stared, thinking you wouldn’t notice. A wave from Rumi was all it took for him to look away with a blush.
“He does,” Miruko laughed as she turned back to you. “He’s just afraid of admitting it. Hero work consumed his whole life. He never got a chance to do what he pleases, be it in his professional or personal life. That’s why he always tries to play calm, no one should suspect anything. He’s the Hero Commission's best man, he isn’t allowed to let feelings get in his way and due to that, he’s often prone to hurting himself more than those around him. But when he’s near you, I can see the way his eyes sparkle when you talk, how relaxed his face looks, how his feathers ruffle when you giggle and smile. Working together with him, you realize things like that. You mean a lot to him, but being the chicken he is, he just doesn’t say it.”
You thought for a second. It was true. All this time you thought Hawks was just unreachable due to his high demanding profession, that you were dreaming when you thought you saw the sparkle in his eyes that screamed admiration. That it was all just a facade because you were in public. Seems like it wasn’t just a dream.
“Go talk to him in private when you have the chance,” Miruko patted you on the back before joining the people inside again.
You turned as well, going back to leaning against the balcony frame and staring out into the distance over the rooftops of the city. Was Miruko right? It was hard to believe her words. How can such an amazing person like Hawks feel more than just platonic or professional feelings for someone like you? You looked over your shoulder towards the gathering, spotting Hawks still sitting in the same position as you saw him in earlier, propped up against the bar, looking at you. You felt a blush creep up on your cheeks.
When you saw Miruko walk up to him, whisper something in his ear and look into your direction with a smirk, you turned away to pretend you weren’t looking at them. He’s just a friend, he’s just a friend, you tried to convince yourself.
Suddenly you felt a feather tickle your neck and when you turned around, you saw Keigo walking towards you, a hand in his neck as he further approached. “Hey there, dove.” He greeted, stretching his wings when he was out in the open.
“Hey,” you greeted back, trying not to act jumpy as your heartbeat picked up. His presence alone had such an effect on you.
“Great work today.” He congratulated with a smile, hand still in his neck, indecisive of what to do next.
“You too,” you replied, ignoring your cheeks which seemed to redden more because of his compliment.
Silence spread between you for a short moment. ‘This is it’ you thought. You have to tell him now.
“Y/N-” spoke Keigo at the same time.
“You first,” you gestured towards him and he blushed before looking at you, moving a tiny step closer.
“Where should I start,” he chuckled nervously. “There is so much I want to share with you, especially after today.”
He could have lost you today in the battle. But not only today, he could lose you every day when he wasn’t here. He didn’t know if he could live with that, live without you, not when you were the one thing in his life grounding him.
“Well, we have all night.” You said, offering him another smile as you yourself nudged closer to his inviting frame.
He smiled back and accepted the offering in moving closer, a wing stretching over to you.
“I just-” he started, but was cut off by a voice from inside.
“Get on with it you pigeon!” Miruko yelled and Hawks shot her an embarrassed look.
You could only giggle before his wing came up around you again, this time shielding you completely from the other’s views inside. Your shoulder brushed against his chest and Keigo moved to wrap an arm around you, pulling you even closer.
“You mean so much to me, you know that? These feelings are still so new to me. I’ve never known anything besides my job or the Commission, but when you came into my life, I instantly felt a connection. I feel like you’re the one who will show me a new way. You’re so special to me, in so many ways.” Keigo tried to keep eye contact, it’s the most vulnerable you had ever seen him be.
Your smile widened after hearing him out, looking over the rooftops before you again as you answered in a whisper. “I feel the same, you know.”.
Hawks’ own eyes got wider. Did he understand correctly? “You… you do?”
“I do.” Your voice raised as you told him, turning your head so he could see your smile.
Keigo felt a little caught, but when he saw your smile, all of his thoughts and doubts washed away and he quietly laid his chin on top of your head, holding you for a moment before he gathered his voice again.
“In that case,” he said, turning to you and holding out his hand. “Would you care to join me for a dance and uhm… maybe a drink later at my place?”
You felt your heart soar and you accepted his hand so he could lead you back into the building. “That sounds lovely .”
Even around you he tried to stay as calm as ever, but over time and especially tonight you learned to read and understand his signs, see beyond his flirty behavior and realize that with you, he meant every word he said and everything he did.
Maybe there was something to what Miruko had told you and judging by Keigo’s proud look and the way his feathers puffed up when his fingers intertwined with yours, you slowly started to believe that he really did feel the same. His smile lit up your world, not only just this night. His smile was your rock, no, he was your rock and light in the darkest times. You internally giggled at the thought that maybe, just maybe, soon he will be so much more and not just in your dreams and fantasies.
