“There wasn’t any view at all where I lived,” Boaz said wistfully, thinking about his shitty life in Sunset District where no one ever saw sunlight. Now, he was looking past the windows of the Observation Deck, at the view…. outside. He threw up his hands and snorted. “Now, there’s not any fucking view here. Who’da thunk?”

“Here I am and you’re saying there’s no view?” Keisa was very obviously joking, but very deep down, hidden beneath the joke was the slightest bit of an actual attempt to flirt with the man. Keisa didn’t intent to join in on the negativity the other was exuding, but he did understand the other’s frustration. Kei always tried to stay on the positive side and look for the good in almost everything. Still, he was able to empathize. “I’m kidding. There’s a planetarium in here somewhere, though.”

Axel knew he should be thankful that he even got a ticket, no matter where it came from, but it felt like an impossible task when it meant being around his parents again. Still, he somehow managed to keep his more dramatic and petty complaints to himself upon hearing his friend’s laughter. “Uh huh, don’t be surprised when I actually take you up on that one day.” He was mostly joking too, but it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for him to ask Keisa if he could legitimately crash on his floor for a night or two if his parents got even more unbearable than usual. That was the silver lining in all this, right? That even though the situation he found himself in on the USS Vistor was less than ideal, he still had his best friend around to make it all more tolerable. Axel cracked a smile and laughed, “Why? Planning on being my wingman? Because you know if that’s the case the point is to make me look good, not kick my ass and embarrass me.” 

“I won’t be.” Keisa grinned. “I’d love to cuddle you through the darkest nights.” He looked at his plate in disappointment and then over to Axel’s plate where a fork was rather moving the pasta from side to side than bring it up to his best mate’s mouth. “I’ll do my best but you seem to be a hopeless case.” With a swift motion, his own fork did find its way to Axel’s pasta, picked up some and made its way back into his own mouth. “Well, maybe they gonna pitty you and nurse your ass back to health. I’ll be the villain to your heroic defeat.”

That her son found out that she really wasn’t human, that she was a Synthetic. Years of protecting the Diaz children from the truth was wasted. But no, it couldn’t be. Right? “Of course I don’t. We’ll leave that to your father with his smoking and drinking.”

Her playful comment told Keisa that he had diverted his mother’s mind far enough from the original problem to smirk back at her at ease. “I’d love to leave this to nobody. That would sound like the perfect plan to me.” Keisa was glad that his father was doing better again. Thankfully, his mother seemed to have an impeccable immune system and never seemed to get sick. “We should do games night soon.”

“Stubbing your toe sucks – this is more like cruel and unusual punishment.” He muttered as he pushed some of his pasta around with his fork. His friend was right though, he couldn’t refuse to eat for the entirety of their voyage just because he was annoyed with his circumstances. “Sure, sure, I’ll eat this oh so delicious food. Mostly because I’ve gotten my ass handed to me enough on this ship and don’t want to further embarrass myself by being unable to keep up with you later.”

This was one of the topics Axel and him disagreed on. Keisa tried to understand Axel the best he could when it came to the situation with his family, but he couldn’t help but include his own gratitude to even have a family and that his sister and he had been adopted into such a loving one. Still, he tried. “I get it. It’s so cruel not having to die from radiation on earth. I told you, you should join me in my bunk.” He was joking and barley able to hold back his laugh. Axel was the most important person on the ship for him besides his family and arguably the only one that kept him sane in this shithole. “Maybe I should eat your food then. Just so you can’t and I get to woop ya ass later. Maybe there are some nice chicks down in the gym tonight.” Wow. How much more obvious would his jokes get? They both knew that he was too gay for his own good.

“Do I get to eat my cereals with warm milk today. Doesn’t look like it.” The light inside the microwave had gone dark just as the lights around him had and the bowl inside containing his cereals and some kind of milky substance had stopped turning as well. He sighed.

LOCATION: DINING HALL TIME: THREE DAYS INTO NO POWER

To say Wren was coping well was a lie  —— the woman was maintaining her calm and cool exterior, despite it all, but no, she wasn’t calm in the slightest. If the power remained out for days, whose to say that it wasn’t going to stay out forever? She was going to bring a child into a world that was just a ship, with limited supplies, and doom them. There was such a strong chance of the USS Visitor never truly turning back on again.

The lights finally turned on after a good while, giving her a glimpse of the small rationed meal in front of her again. “You think this is the end?” Wren asked, looking over to the person seated near her. 

His claustrophobia was getting worse and Keisa knew there was nothing to be done about it. He wasn’t exactly an engineer and could jump to the rescue with whatever was wrong with the reactor. He just wanted to get to Abellio as fast as possible so he could be out in the open again. The constant flickering of lights and sudden power-outages only made him feel more nauseous and close to a panic attack. Despite having no appetite at all, he was eating. He was never not hungry. Keisa flinched when the lights went on again, he was so stressed and tense. By now, he wasn’t sure anymore whether he liked the lights to just stay off or switch every now and then. “I’d rather not think that.” He answered the woman sitting across from him, a few seats further down the long table. He was having dinner early tonight so he would be able to just go back to sleep again. There weren’t many people around them.

“Kei, are you just trying to send me into another heart attack over this situation?” Astrid asked, shaking her head. “It’s a military base, they can protect us from anything that’s potentially dangerous.”

“No.” Keisa was shaking his head quickly. He needed to pay closer attention to what he was saying to his mother. He really didn’t mean to stress her out. “Yes, sure they can.” He wasn’t convinced at all, but Astrid seemed tense and already worried enough herself to also bear her son’s worries on top of that. That’s why he decided to try a grin instead. “But you do know that you don’t really do heart attacks, right?”

“Damn, what gave it away?” Xavi asked with a grin. “We look so alike.” He happily took one of the cookies, wasting very little time in digging in to them. “This is the tastiest thing I’ve eaten for weeks. The food is really letting us down on here. I miss actual cooking.” 

Keisa simply laughed at his father’s comment and shook his head. He could have been his uncle’s best-friend if they’d tried. “Me too, man. I mean, you and mom cooking. I miss that. Not actually cooking myself.” He joked and was pretty sure he would be getting another witty remark back.

Astrid squeeze her son’s hand back, not reassured enough. But she’d let this go for now. “Trust me, Kei, everyone wishes this was over with. I’m just ——  i don’t know what Abellio is like. I don’t like the unknowns. It’s making me go mad.”

“Honestly, it’s the same for me. The little messages from Mr. President himself don’t really help either.” He rolled his eyes. “Unknown wildlife that’s potentially not wild and dangerous. Leaves enough potential room for the other option, in my opinion.”

“No, you’re not. If you have any kind of problem, things aren’t good enough for my children,” Astrid said quickly, shaking her head at him asking her not to bother pulling any strings for him. “Do you want your own cabin? We might be able to find something for you to feel less cramped with us.”

Oh no. He already regret everything he’d just said. “Mom, no. Please. I’m fine. Really. I’d just rather this voyage into the unknown would be over already.” He reached out to her and squeezed her hand softly and, hopefully, reassuringly. “This is probably hard on everyone. I want to stay with you. At least we’re all in it together.”

“You’re more than welcome to my share of food.” Axel offered before scrunching up his face. “Something about this place is really killing my appetite.” Honestly, how was he expected to be in the mood to do anything other than complain while in the middle of a less than joyous reunion with his parents?

“Dude, I know this sucks. But you gotta eat.” Keisa shook his head at the offer even though he would have loved to munch on some more pasta. He knew he was being a heavy stress-eater right there, but that’s exactly what made it so difficult to stop and just let it be. “We should get a work-out in after you finished. I’m serious, Axel. You need some carbs to keep up with me later.”

“It is pretty awful, I’ll admit. But I’m fine. Trust me on that,” she said, knowing very well she never had to eat if she didn’t want to. But if a human mother never ate, people would think strangely of her  ——  hence, keeping up her human persona going for her kids. “The ship treating you well? Let me know if I can try to pull any strings to make things easier for you.”

Keisa watched his mother with slightly furrowed brows. He was always a bit worried about his family. They were constantly in the back of his mind, but it was only natural in a situation like theirs. “No, Mom. Don’t. I’m fine, really. The ship is just a bit too cramped for my liking. You know I’m a bit claustrophobic. Don’t bother any of those strings because of me.” He grinned at the woman in front of him and was reminded once more of how lucky he was to have his entire family with him on board and of how he was lucky to have this family in the first place.

“I think you get that from me…” Xavi joked, but was also being a tad serious. Biologically it was impossible, but he and Astrid had been in the kids’ lives for years, so stranger things could happen. “Sorry ‘bout that.” He grinned.

Keisa snorted through his laugh. “Don’t even try. I’ve always known I’m adopted.” He grinned at his dad and held out the bag of chocolate cookies he had chosen for a snack today for Xavi to join in on the munchin. “They’re delish.”

“Yes, everything we do eat out here is fake.” Not to mention the meals weren’t the high-quality vegan meals that she had pushed on the Diaz family from their first adoption. “And bug you? Kei, do you really think that poorly of me mothering you?”

“Naw. It’s the food in here I’m thinking poorly of.” He grinned at his mother. “Don’t worry about me, mom. I’m pretty sure I’m getting all my As and Bs and C,D,Es. What about you?”

“Are you sure you’re getting the right kinds of foods, Kei? You need a lot of vitamins to keep yourself going, especially when your body is going through so much out here in space,” Astrid said, instantly kicking in her motherly instincts with her son.

“Mom, please.” Keisa dragged out the o in mom as he used to when he was younger and first started to actually call Astrid his mother. “Don’t bug me. Isn’t everything we eat out here fake anyway. What a way to get my good ol’ vitamins than a little chemistry set.” He didn’t wanted to act so bratty, but the confined space of the ship was already getting to him.
