ISLA FISHER keeping up with the joneses
lonesomeadam:
It happened so suddenly, Adam barely had a clue of what happened. He knew it was going to happen on the ship eventually, but now? Really? And why couldn’t the Sanders be one of those minimalist rich families? He just had to topple over a few things on his fall. He couldn’t help but wonder if there wasn’t a crash, would he still be lying there? If his injury hadn’t been on his head, he would have shook it, but instead all that came was a restrained bobble. “I get a feeling everything in here is gonna sting.” At least that was what he wanted to say - who knew what came out. On the bright side, he could still use his mouth. Or maybe that wasn’t a bright side. He just wished he could see one Peggy instead of two with the way his head felt like it was going to split open. Adding a bit of sting to it? Hopefully it would feel like nothing.
Peggy noticed just how foggy his gaze looked. “Maybe a sting would be good for you right now, Adam?” She’d scanned over his paperwork when she’d first arrived at his side - she always did this with patients anyway. “What’s your vision like right now? Can you see me okay? One of me, that is.” Picking up the sterlised cotton bud, she wiped it over his wound with a great deal of care. A head injury was always worrying. “How’d you manage a nasty knock like this one, hm? An accident? Or perhaps not?” She probed gently, conscious that remembering could be quite difficult for him right now. “Don’t worry too much if you can’t remember.”
benefitorahazard:
“Absolutely. Throwing in the towel,” Wren laughed. “I thank God every day for that fact. I want you to make sure I’m completely knocked out for the birth too. I think I’m getting too old to even want to go through this actually awake.”
“Knocked out completely?” Peggy laughed a little harder. “Are you sure about that? It’s not gonna be as traumatic as you’re imagining it to be, trust me.” A baby’s first cry was one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. There was really nothing better. “I think you’ll change your mind about that.”
lionheartedfm:
Axel was starting to get the feeling this was how he was going to be spending all his time in space – getting into heated arguments over synths that ultimately resulted in a few injuries. Not exactly ideal, especially now that these sort of fights came with the your-actions-are-embarrassing-the-family talk. The small sting from the alcohol swabs would be far more tolerable than that. “Would you believe me if I said I’m just incredibly clumsy?”
“Probably not.” Peggy laughed. “You’d have to be damn well clumsy to do this to yourself.” The wound cleaned up pretty easily, and she set about making up a dressing. “I take it the other guy came off a little worse than you did though?” It was said with a very small smirk as she fixed her gaze on him. “Or maybe he didn’t...?”
benefitorahazard:
“Oh, it’s amazing money. But you probably couldn’t even handle pointing a gun at someone without folding under pressure, let’s be honest with each other here,” Alexei said, ignoring her comment about her money not being good enough for him.
“That’s because I actually have a moral compass, which I’ll remind you isn’t a bad thing. Unless you’d prefer me to go around pointing guns at everyone?” Rosie gave him a pointed look and raised her eyebrows. “Guess I’ll just have to find a different way of making money. And I will pay you back. I never break a promise.”
benefitorahazard:
Roman had been honestly going through it the last few weeks on the ship. He was getting into fights left and right, making enemies that he likely shouldn’t. At least it gave him a chance to speak to someone he might have considered a friend —— although that thought he kept pushed out of his head as much as he could. “Surprisingly, it’s not as exciting as you may think.”
“You sure about that?” Peggy asked, readying the swab before she wiped it over his wound. “I hear a hundred and one boring things a day, I’m sure your story is far more exciting.” Looking at the partially cleaned wound, she decided that she probably needed a couple more cotton swabs and leaned over to the tub to her left to grab some. “Lift your sleeve a little for me, just so I can clean the area properly before I bandage it.”
benefitorahazard:
“Alright, fine. You can think I’m lying about this. I might be a dick, but I’m not a fuckin’ liar. Consider this an early ‘I-told-you-so.”
“I wouldn’t put it past you to lie about this. Especially to me. Just don’t try to feed your mom the same lies, it’s cruel.”
benefitorahazard:
“I’ll accept mostly together. That way I can get a little bit of a break holding it all together.” Astrid kept her arms wrapped around her husband, letting out a sigh. “Do you think Abellio is going to be better? I thought life for humans was barely sustainable there.”
Xavi could live with that. His arms stayed wrapped around her and he followed her sigh with one of his own. “Honestly, I don’t know. Scientifically speaking, it doesn’t look all that promising.” It wasn’t his field, though he had colleagues who’d been looking into the sustainability and atmosphere so he’d gleaned some knowledge from them. “I’m hoping we have a miraculous breakthrough,” he let out a small laugh, “maybe we will?” He could live in hope.
benefitorahazard:
“You can learn how to have rhythm, trust me. And do you think everyone is born into this life being a complete sex wizard?” Atlas asked, trying her best not to roll her eyes at the other woman. God, it was annoying how she was probably selling herself short. Humans needed to be much more proud and confident in their abilities.
Rosie couldn’t help snorting her laughter. “A sex wizard? That sounds amazing and terrifying at the same time.” There were many other comments she wanted to make but she bit her tongue. “I appreciate your faith in me, but I just don’t think I’d have a promising career as a dancer or a sex wizard. I haven’t had any wand action in, like, years.” She shrugged.

The left side of the empty observation deck was dimly lit by the whirlwind of stars, scattered across the nothingness of space in an oval swirl. Cornelia had chosen to gaze out into space from this side instead of the other. Behind her, space was a black mass of nothingness and she couldn’t face that right now. the superficial lights on the observation deck were dulled down almost to the point of being shut off entirely. Nelly was sitting cross-legged on the floor, right in front of one of the window panes. Tonight had been especially hard on her. The emptiness of her accommodations, that were far too spacious for herself alone, had weighed her down and had almost suffocated her underneath her sheets. After what had felt like an eternity of laying in bed awake, she had decided to retreat to the deserted observation deck. She had a bottle of red wine and a wine glass with her. And now she was simply staring out into space, sitting on the cold floor, wrapped in her dressing gown, waiting for…the sun would never rise again.
Peggy had been working more hours than she cared to count. Sleep wasn’t exactly necessary for her, but she did like to ‘recharge her batteries’ so to speak. The chaos of the past few weeks was beginning to calm as they grew accustomed to life on the ship, and as she wandered through the corridors she found it to be quieter than usual. As she reached the observation deck, Peggy noticed a figure sitting alone, looking out into the masses of space that surrounded them. Not wanting to scare her, she cleared her throat to make her presence known before slowly walking over. “You definitely picked the better window to look out of. Crazy to think how far away they are, even when we’re way up here.” She too stared for a moment before casting her gaze over to the woman. “Do you mind if I join you for a little while?”
keisa-diaz:
Keisa snorted through his laugh. “Don’t even try. I’ve always known I’m adopted.” He grinned at his dad and held out the bag of chocolate cookies he had chosen for a snack today for Xavi to join in on the munchin. “They’re delish.”
“Damn, what gave it away?” Xavi asked with a grin. “We look so alike.” He happily took one of the cookies, wasting very little time in digging in to them. “This is the tastiest thing I’ve eaten for weeks. The food is really letting us down on here. I miss actual cooking.”
keisa-diaz:
“No matter how much I eat, it’s never enough.”
“I think you get that from me...” Xavi joked, but was also being a tad serious. Biologically it was impossible, but he and Astrid had been in the kids’ lives for years, so stranger things could happen. “Sorry ‘bout that.” He grinned.
“Look, I’m not here to pry, I’m just here to help.” Peggy paused to pick up the alcohol swab from the table just to her right. “If you don’t wanna tell me how this happened then that’s fine.” She did want to know how it had happened, because if there was trouble on board somewhere then she felt as though she had the right to know. Protecting her wife was at the very top of her list of priorities. “This is probably gonna sting, by the way.”

Theo sat quietly at one of the canteen tables, coffee in hand. He wasn’t even sure if he liked the hot drink, having not even taken a sip, but he knew that humans may find it strange or uncomfortable if he were to simply sit there with nothing to occupy him. As good as his programming was, however, blending in with humans was a struggle for him. He could do it… he had done it… Theo had been originally designed to hide amongst humans in order to locate sources of the synth uprising uninterrupted, but since Sander Corporation had rushed their reprogramming of him, he seemed to have some trouble doing things he used to do so easily.
It was incredibly frustrating, but this was why he found himself here in the canteen. Maybe he could learn how to fix his errors by watching how the humans behaved. Appearing more robotic surely wouldn’t help him do his job correctly, but according to his creators, humans didn’t like not being able to tell the difference between themselves and synths. Yet, synth behaviours also seemed to upset them. It was all very confusing.
In all his time watching the people around him, he hadn’t noticed someone else approaching his table.
.
Peggy had been working for most of the morning. As a volunteer medic, she was needed a lot of the time. Aside from the injuries sustained in the attack on earth, they had passengers who were dehydrated and hungry - those who lacked the money to pay for food after spending everything they had on their ticket were going without. If she were human, she’d probably physically and emotionally exhausted, but luckily for her that wasn’t the case. She was designed and built for medical purposes - this was quite literally her calling.
Right now her calling seemed to be food, though.
The canteen was fairly busy, and after picking up a few different options that she could choose between, she went in search of a table. There was space next to a man sitting by himself, and he looked friendly enough. At least from a first glance anyway. Peggy approached, a smile on her face. “Excuse me? I hope you don’t mind me asking, but is anyone sitting here? Most of the other tables are full, you see.”
benefitorahazard:
“Don’t you get all emotional on me,” Astrid joked, taking in his warmth as they were close. As cheesy as it was, the Synthetic truly felt that home was with Xavier and her kids. “We need at least one parent to have it together right now.”
He couldn’t help but laugh at her little comment, and pinched at her waist gently. “Hey, you can’t hog all the emotion, you’ve gotta let me have my fair share.” Xavi joked back, a grin appearing on his face. “I’ll keep it mostly together, how does that sound?”
benefitorahazard:
Sterling rolled his eyes, not surprised that Xavier was just brushing this off as trying to get at him. Sure, he did say and do some shit things —— but he never had the intention of throwing his own future demise at his adoptive father. “What makes you think that I’m just saying this to get at you? I got like, a year tops.”
“Because that’s what you do - it’s what you’ve always done.” He brushed it off again, partly down to his own ignorance and partly because he didn’t want to believe it. “You hide things from me, lie to my face and you do it to hurt me. I’m not an idiot, Sterling.”
benefitorahazard:
“Oh, don’t even make me think about the ankles. I don’t know if I can handle this anymore,” Wren half-joked. Motherhood had seemed so wonderful, but the side effects on a passenger ship? On a new planet that wasn’t truly meant for human life? It was getting a bit stressful. “I may take you up on your offer, then.”
“Ha! Already giving up?” She continued to tease, knowing that Wren was joking. Peggy was certain that her wife would absolutely kick ass at being pregnant and being a mother. “You’re very, very lucky that you’re married to an expert. I could deliver babies in my sleep.” She laughed softly. “I hope you do take me up on it. If not, then we both know I’ll just do it anyway.”
