Keith is a complicated character. He operates a little differently than the other paladins. He’s not the only one with a difficult family history, but his centers around the way that he is. He’s hotheaded for a reason, and he’s very talented without a lot of ways or things that he can use to express that. His naïveté mixed with his sheer will to make things happen for himself means his hotheadedness may be viewed as a defense mechanism. He comes from an obviously difficult and mysterious past that pushes him to be great. He’s really complex and fun.“(…) “Keith thinks with his heart often, and sometimes his heart is very fiery, and I think that leads him to brash decisions. The Mighty Grand Piton is a short film about a young British girl, Connie, who travels to the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia for her school holidays with her family. There, she accidentally awakens a giant robot buried under the Twin Piton mountains on the south of the Island. This robot seems compelled to protect Saint Lucia but his origins are mysterious. No one knows where he came from or how long he’s been there. During the many years he’s lain dormant, The Mighty Grand Piton, became nothing more than the stuff of legend. Problem #1 regarding child abuse is that a lot of people seem to struggle to imagine normal, respectable-looking parents and other authority figures ever doing it despite the statistics so instead they do the stranger danger panic and completely overlook some of the greatest threats.

Problem #2 is that even when people understand, even if in an abstract way, that parents can be abusive they just... don't seem to actually register that as something that can apply to real life. It's just hypothetical to them and doesn't actually guide their ideas of how to prevent child abuse.

Problem #3 is that even after overcoming the above biases a lot of people have a very narrow image of what abusive parenting is where they imagine like... people doing violent things basically out of sadism and without provocation. They don't seem to think it's "real" abuse if the victim did something that "justifies" punitive violence, like disobeying the parents.

In fact, most people think parents have a right to do a whole lot of awful things to their children beyond just hitting them, like violating their privacy, controlling their access to information, and deciding what/when/if they eat, among other things.

You might notice that for starters not a single one of the top 5 most populous countries in the world (representing 45% of the world population just by themselves) has a ban.

Globally speaking, most of the children in the world live in places where it is legal to hit them (up to 86% are not protected by law as of last year, according to UNICEF) and even where they have legal protections there is the matter of social acceptance and enforcement.

i remember there being a couple of posts on here that got fairly popular presenting not hitting your kids as like a "white people thing (derogatory)". Literally woke apologia for hitting kids.

as someone living in a country where it is in fact forbidden to physically punish your children the first thing my mum taught me was that it is not only important that the parents know it is illegal but also that the CHILDREN know. as a small child or even as an older child who gets punished physically the chances that you actually know that what's happening isn't just Wrong but also Officially Illegal are slim to none. so i've been witness to her going up to parents who were threatening or hitting their children more than once. every time she told them very politely "hi sorry, i hope you're aware that it is illegal to hit your children. should i call the police or will you stop doing that on your own?" and the parents would look super pissed off but the kids would look very suddenly very interested. especially older sisters always seem to take the information that it is in fact okay to call the police if being hit by their parents very seriously. and one time my mum did call the cops. on our neighbour. never saw that guy again but his son to this day comes over to say hello every time he's in town. so be kind to your children. protect other people's children and help them protect themselves too.

As kid my dad hit me once. I was a bit weird as a kid so I actually told him that it was illegal. He told me I had not been hit but it was a "corrective tick". People can convince themselves in many ways that they aren't the ones doing the bad thing.

Because I feel like kids of color don’t hear it enough: domestic abuse is not a part of your culture. 

A lot of us were raised with the idea that “its normal for wives/children to get hit! it helps them learn– only white folk don’t get beaten when they misbehave”. That’s not true, white people aren’t the only ones who deserve a safe and abuse free environment. Black and brown people can and do have loving families. 

If you’re in a situation where you are enduring abuse and people use your culture to justify it, I want you to know that what they’re telling you are lies.

Thank you. I’m Black and from a Black family. I remember wishing that I was either white or from a white family because the constant rhetoric that “Black people beat their kids, white people don’t and that’s why they act like that” was constantly stated as if it were fact and a fact to be proud of. It seemed to little me that white people actually cared about their children and were gentle, completely able to hear them out and communicate even if their child or teen was behaving “badly” without hurting their kids as seen in a lot of shows, movies, and what’s implied in that dumbass saying. Of course, I know better now. I’m so glad that gentle parenting is on the rise and that people are actually making conscious decisions, especially R E S E A R C H in regards to children, pregnancy, and how to raise kids in general. Domestic/Child abuse shouldn’t be normalized as apart of someone’s “culture” no matter how you spin it. Little me needed to hear this.

I always feel like kids who had sexual abuse deserve more sympathy than I do because mom slapped my ass a few times when I was five.

I was spanked. thats my "physical abuse" I lament about over and over again. thats literally it. I wish I had more severe trauma. if we look at the emotional abuse from a certain angle we could call it psychological torture the way it was planned out, had plan Bs and plan Cs and plan Ds in case none of the prior plans worked. at least i think so.
