valilance:
Ā Ā Ā Lance wasnāt a heartless animal, of course, and despite his snappish attitude towards Keith he wasnāt about to verbally attack the other for resting. He waited, somewhat impatiently, until Keith had gotten his breath back and sassed him, before speaking again. Lips drawing to a frustrated close, he was incapable of hiding his reaction to Keithās words. Caught off guard at the idea he could have helpedĀ Keith, he blinked. What on ā Oh, right. It wasnāt that Keith neededĀ him to help, Lance just clearlyĀ wasnāt picking up any slack. Right.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Scoffing, Lance rolled his eyes. He was clearly mocking Keithās behaviour as the other walked towards the door, immaturity seeping over his body. Would he ever admit that the reason behind such animosity between them was the result of his own behaviour? No. Regardless, he knew he was the stem of their arguments. Often times he wondered if he should stop, but then he would find himself reacting badly to something Keith had done, and the grave heād begun digging all those weeks ago would simply become deeper.
Ā Ā Ā āIāll bring the whole snack bar,ā he bit back, wrenching himself away from the wall and shoving the doors open. They groaned but allowed the two paladins access. Lance gestured down the hallway with his half-cocked gun.Ā āPidge said it was over in the main room. We just have to get to the upper levels.ā He fell silent then but wasnāt able to keep the peace for long.
Ā Ā Ā āAnd,ā he began, spinning on his heel to face Keith,Ā āwhat the hellĀ do you mean Iād rather not be working with you? Youāre the one who never wants to work with me!ā Spluttering, Lance narrowed his eyes.Ā āWeĀ never want to work together!ā He wouldnāt take the blame that it was entirely his fault; his pride was too much; his grudge was too strong.
It took every ounce of Keithās self-restraint to not give in to the urge to roll his eyes. He knew the gesture would be misconstrued, as almost everything was between them. He had grown accustomed to Lanceās disdain for him. It hurt, but there was nothing to be done about it. He certainly wasnāt going to dwell on it when there was work to be done.Ā
āLance, we really donāt have time for this,ā He murmured, the last thing they needed was another unwarranted argument that would set-back their mission.Ā āYou made it obvious from the second we saved Shiro that you wanted nothing to do with me. I didnāt even know your name then, so you canāt honestly say this started with me.āĀ
Keith peered around the door-frame. He checked the length of the corridor, and once sure that there were no Galra coming for them, he made a sprint for the emergency stare case at the end of the hall, if they were lucky it wouldnāt be in use. Maybe they could simply run up to the top levels undetected. He really didnāt want to have to crawl through vents. He couldnāt look Lance in the eye as he spoke.
āLook, you donāt wanna work with me? Fine. You think Iām some no good delinquent? Fine.ā Keith felt a lump form in his throat as he said the words, finding it hard to stop his voice from cracking and giving away how much Lanceās opinion pained him.Ā āBut, donāt start projecting, okay? Whatever problem you have with me? Thatās on you. You didnāt even give me the chance to form an opinion on you, you were on my back from the jump.ā That wasnāt strictly true of course, if that were the case then Keith certainly wouldnāt be harboring feelings. Despite Lanceās blatant animosity, Keith cared deeply for the other paladin, which only made the entire dilemma that much worse.
I think for you I would be Atlas. I would carry the weight of the world on my shoulder. And if I fell,Ā I would be just fine knowing I had died for you.
