“Sie rauchen auch?” fragte derselbe Mann vom Tisch – der, mit den müden, blauen Augen. Vom Balkon schauten wir hinab auf die Passanten der Straßen Berlins. Seine Hände gruben in seiner Hosen- und Jackentasche herum.
Zuerst zögerte ich. Beinahe hätte ich eine maulige Antwort wie “Für die Ruhe” oder “Gern allein” gegeben. Seine Frage war nicht unberechtigt – immerhin habe ich mich extra vom Tisch entfernt, um kurze Ruhe zu genießen.
“Ab und zu schau’ ich gern beim Rauchen den Leuten am Vorbeilaufen zu. Also, ich gaffe nicht, aber stelle mir halt vor, was sie vorhaben. Was sie in den Händen tragen, ob der Schal schnell umgeworfen worden ist, oder sorgfältig geknotet – das spielt alles eine Rolle.”
Er lächelte. Schnell wendete ich meinen Blick von ihm ab und zog ein letztes Mal an der Zigarette zwischen meinen Fingern. Selbst bevor ich sie den Balkon hinunter schnipsen konnte, bot er mir eine neue an. Ich hätte zögern müssen, dennoch griff ich an eine seiner Zigaretten aus dem silbernen Etui in seiner Hand.
Plötzlich kam er einen Schritt näher und zog ein Feuerzeug aus seiner rechten Innentasche. Das Leder seiner Jacke knarrt unter seinen Armbewegungen, während er sich eine eigene Zigarette zwischen die Lippen legt. Identisch legte ich mir meine ein und ließ mich von August sanft am Arm näher ziehen; das Feuerzeug hielt er zwischen unsere Zigaretten und zündete sie an.
Seine Augen blieben konzentriert auf die sich beinahe berührenden Zigaretten, bevor er einen halben Schritt zurücktrat. Stolz grinste er.

Despite your political views, know that it is not a good thing that the United States of America just decided to send an air strike to multiple cities of Venezuela at 3am in the morning of January 3rd, breaking several local and international laws in the process. They're counting the dead and the ones that are hurt. People were on vacation, sleeping, celebrating with hope for a new year.
It is not a good thing and it never will.
This means they can do that whenever they can without consequences. What happens today to us in Venezuela can happen to any other country at any time the US government wants.
They've done it before, they're doing it again.
Don't let this go unspoken just because you're not directly affected and don't wait until there are many people dead or starving to raise your voice against this 🙏🙏

unfriendly and honestly hostile reminder that trump isn't invading venezuela because maduro is a dictator, or because of drug cartels. he's doing it only and exclusively because they have desirable oil reserves and no other reason. reminder that venezuela is a comparatively poor country that will never financially recover from this. reminder that venezuelans are suffering with the bombing and the air strikes. reminder that trump did it to steal from them and no one did anything. reminder that this sets a dangerous precedent and now all trump has to do to invade another country is claim they're in a dictatorship. reminder that trump is a fascist dictator.
this will only be bad, for venezuelans and for all of latin america (and possibly the whole world) in the long run. trump did this not to help the venezuelans or their country, but to steal their petrol and get away with it. and he will. because that's what dictators do.

Just to say that it’s not incompatible to disagree with Nicolás Maduro’s governance and, at the same time, to view it as an act of international terrorism when a country —without authorisation from its own Congress or from any international body— literally bombs another one, storms it, and takes its president. The USA believes it has the authority to do whatever it wants, wherever it wants, and that is an international danger. It’s been doing this for decades in the Middle East, and it did it throughout the 20th century in Latin America — they are an international threat.
People cheering the USA for having taken Maduro out of Venezuela are fucking idiots, because they’ve basically skipped a shitload of international laws, bombed the place, and barged into another country with zero legitimate authority. And the thing is, that sets a precedent where they can see themselves — and believe themselves — entitled to meddle in any country, under whatever excuse, and do whatever the hell they want. Like, do you even understand how dangerous that is, or do we need to make you a PowerPoint so it finally sinks in?
Edit: I’m adding this because I’ve seen a lot of people pointing out that this isn’t the first time the USA has done something like this and I know that. When I talk about precedent, I’m talking about contemporary precedents of direct aggression against countries within the American continent, which hadn’t happened for decades. And that is a direct threat to all the governments in Latin America that currently dissent from US policies, and that could now be at risk if that shithole of a country decides, on a whim, that it feels like getting rid of them. All of you who are applauding this: Salvador Allende is watching you from the grave.
