Somehow, she was always the one to tell Kelly the bad news. She was tired of being the messenger, but she owed the woman answers. Sadly, more often than not they weren’t too optimistic. She moved around nervously as her daughter sighed and showed signs of distress. Even Celeste looked away, as if to avoid this awful situation. “Yeah, I guess.” She nodded, agreeing with the woman. Even if she resented the man, she didn’t want him dead.
“Well, you may want to sit down for this.” She suggested, indicating the kitchen. If they sat behind a table and had a water glass nearby, perhaps they’ll be calmer.
Maybe it was better this way. Maybe she wouldn’t have to try and decide if she wanted to meet him. Maybe she wouldn’t dwell on if he’d even want to meet her. Now that choice was made for her and as much as it hurt, Kelly knew it would help in the long run. Things would be easier on her. She didn’t need any increased complications in her life.
However, when Anya told her she should sit, Kelly knew the worse was probably going to get worse. “Alright,” she murmured slightly before she moved into the kitchen and sat down on one of the chairs. She locked her fingers together and looked over at her mother. “What else did you find out?” There was no reason to hide it. Whatever it was, Kelly knew she could handle it.
“Three?” he gave a low whistle, “how do you not live off of caffeine?”
“Honestly you just sort of get used to living in a never-ending circus. That and my husband helps me a lot.”

“Ah, I see.” Anya nodded, figuring if the girls were promised a hangout with their dad, they’re more than deserved to get one. Perhaps she was a little biased, but the older redhead found Cammi and Kianna (and little Celeste) to be the best girls on Earth, and therefore should have whatever their heart desires. Whenever she met them she made sure to have small gifts in her bag, which made her feel like an old grandmother on one hand, but giddy and gleeful on the inside when she saw the delight on the girls’ faces as they received a present on the other hand.
However, as Kelly asked her what she found out about her dad, she let out a sigh. This was inevitable, of course, but this case in particular has been extremely emotionally draining for her. Not too hard to understand why, considering he was the person she tried her hardest to forget, the man whose betrayal was the hardest to take, and shaped the following relationships she tried to maintain afterwards. Surprisingly, nothing could prepare her to what she’s found. “Um,” She stuttered, not really sure how to break the news. “Many things, but most importantly, uh- he’s dead.” She told with a stern voice, continuing to move her body around to keep the baby in her arms quiet. “A stroke, two years ago.”
Dead. That was the last thing Kelly had expected to hear. She had never really expected to meet the man anyway. After all, he was an asshole according to her mother. If he hadn’t wanted to be involved when she was a baby why would he have wanted to be now? Sighing heavily, Kelly ran her fingers through her hair but tried to keep herself from showing too much emotion. “Oh,” she murmured before she bit down on her lower lip. “That’s too bad.” Really, the most terrifying part of this was the fact that maybe, just maybe, young death and strokes would be in her blood too.
She sat and let out a breath before looking at her mother. “What else did you find out?”
“Five years? Impressive. But that means I get to be lazy, which probably isn’t a good thing but my sofa is too comfy for me to care”.
Kelly laughed. “In my defense I do have three kids so unpacking only happens once they’re in bed if I’m not so exhausted I pass out too.”

“Oh, no, don’t bother yourself with that.” Anya gave a small smile, assuring the younger woman. She didn’t found great pleasure in food, it was fuel to her body and nothing more. It was true luck, because if she was able to sense tastes like a normal person she’d probably eat unhealthy foods impulsively; self restriction was definitely not a characteristic she possessed.
Anya raised her eyebrows as Kelly explained the location of the remaining family members. “Oh.” She remarked, slightly disappointed she won’t get the chance to see the little girls but still happy she’s meeting with Kelly, Celeste and the stupid cat. Honestly, she never expected to enjoy family visits as much as she does when it’s with the Grayson’s. More accurately, she never truly thought she’d have many family visits at all. “That’s okay, we’re gonna have so much fun, right?” She said, pointing her words towards the baby in her arms.
“I uh, I have some news.” She started, deciding it’s best to discuss the harsh stuff sooner than later. “Remember when we talked about digging up some information about your dad?” She asked hesitantly. “I found some.”
Kelly was always the type to worry about those things, but she did her best to keep from arguing with her mother about if she should worry. Sure, it wasn’t a big deal by any stretch of the imagination, but Kelly was still at the point where she wanted to impress her birth mother and make sure that absolutely everything went perfectly.
“Yeah, he promised them last night he’d take them. Chad isn’t the type to back out of a promise,” she explained. It was also a nice break for Kelly. She had been able to cook in peace without having one of her older daughters making a mess or interrupt her for some silly reason. It wasn’t that she didn’t love helping her kids. She definitely did. Kelly just struggled when there were a lot of interruptions in a row.
However, those thoughts left Kelly’s head as soon as Anya mentioned her father. Kelly hadn’t expected Anya to find anything so quickly but she was definitely curious. How could she not be? Even if her father had been an asshole to her mother, she still wanted to know about him. “What did you find out?”

Anya smiled upon Kelly as she agreed to rest her baby daughter under her watch. “I do.” She assured, taking the soft baby in her arms. Her crying damaged her eardrum, but the older redhead wasn’t discouraged and began moving around in her place in attempt of calming Celeste down. For now, it didn’t seem like it was working; however, at least she gave it a shot. “That sounds good.” She nodded as her birth daughter mentioned she made some sandwiches, as she didn’t exactly know what are her favorite foods. “I can barely differentiate between tastes, don’t worry about it.” She said briefly. Honestly, she could eat a brick and think it’s a fine enough dish.
As Anya continued to wiggle her body around, the small infant became slightly calmer and quieter. The baby filled her with a heart warming feeling, and she realized how much she missed the two. “Are Cammi and Kianna here?” She asked, wondering if her other kind-of-granddaughters are there. She didn’t miss them any less.
A laugh fell from Kelly’s lips as she listened to Anya speak. Not being able to tell flavors apart was not something Kelly had inherited from her mother. That was something she was certain of. After all, Kelly could be a bit of a picky eater though she was less of one now that she’d gotten older. As a child she’d been terrible and according to her family she spent one summer only eating red things. Thankfully that was one aspect of being a picky eater that didn’t stick around for very long. “Okay good. I was worried about having something you’d eat,” she explained.
However, Kelly shook her head when she was asked about her other daughters. “No, they aren’t. Chad took them to the park. It’s just you, me, Celeste, and Simba. I’m sure he’s around here somewhere,” Kelly mused while she thought about her cat. No doubt he was sleeping on a window sill so he could soak up all the early afternoon sunlight.
“So are you officially moved in when all the boxes are in your house, or when you’ve finished unpacking? Because honestly, I am debating just leaving everything packed and taking what I need when I need it”.
“I’ve always used getting all the boxes in your house and the official move in date. I mean, I moved into my house over five years ago and I think I still have some boxes stored in closets.”
She snorted at nothing in particular, evading a sigh of relief. “ Good. Because crap like sugary cereal is not good for my thighs. As much as I wish it was. — Hey, pass that bottle, would you ? Something’s gotta wash this down. ”
“I don’t think it’s good for any part of you,” Kelly retorted before she handed over the bottle with a smile. “I know it’s not good for any part of me.”
“Eurgh. I turned twenty eight today. It would be an understatement to say I’m depressed,” Meg groaned. “I hate getting older. Why can’t I just be eighteen again?”
“But would you really want to be the foolish teenager we all were at eighteen?”

After burdening herself with work throughout this whole week, Anya couldn’t come up with a better treat than meeting with her daughter. While the two definitely began to form a pleasant relationship, they didn’t get the chance to see each other for a few weeks given Kelly’s busy schedule and Anya heading to New York City again in order to celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. Technically, the holiday was not over yet, but the woman decided family was more important than another visit at the synagogue, so she left the city yesterday in order to be here today.
As she parked the car near Kelly’s house, the realization that she’s not nervous has struck her; the awkwardness and the undeniable tension between the two dissolved a while ago, but Anya has remained slightly anxious in every gathering, and today- she was nearly completely calm. Perhaps it was the holiday spirit or the new dorky guy she’s been dating, but somehow she felt happier and more confident.
The redhead came up the door and rang the doorbell, waiting for an answer. Quickly enough Kelly opened it, holding screaming Celeste in her arms. “Hey.” She smiled, moving her gaze to the baby. “It’s fine, I don’t like loud noises either.” She said as she entered the building, targeting her statement towards the little girl. A feeling of warmth spread in her body as the younger woman remarked the love her daughter have for her. She had a tremendous amount of love for her too. “Do you want me to take her?” She asked decisively, already knowing how to handle a baby at this point.
It seemed like they hadn’t really had much of a chance to talk since they got back from New York. Kelly had been busy. Chad had been busy which kept Kelly even busier. On top of that, Anya was busy too. The fact that they were finally able to make lunch plans was something Kelly was eternally grateful for. Once she let her birth mother into the house and heard her speak, she nodded. “Sure, if you want,” Kelly said before she handed over the crying infant. Celeste was a good baby, but she could definitely be fussy when she wanted to be.
“I’ve got lunch almost ready. It’s just sandwiches. I wasn’t really sure exactly what sort of things you like the best,” Kelly explained. It was one of those things they didn’t really know about each other. Favorite foods and those sorts of habits were something that was picked up over time.
“ Relax. I’ve only had, like — a gallon of the good stuff. And maybe about eleventy-twelve of these fruit stick things. Are they real fruit ? They taste suspiciously candy-like to me. Like those fruit-loop things. Don’t tell me I just blew out my wallet on fruit loops.
OH. And by the way, you look good today. Like, tasty good. ”
A laugh spilled from Kelly’s lips as she tried one as well. “I definitely think these are real fruit so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”
Kay about jumped out of her skin when Kelly came around the corner. “I scared you. You nearly sent me into labor. It’s a little early for that, Kelly,” she laughed. “Yeah, I found said kid,” she replied as she pointed down at Cammi who was holding her hand. Kay knew something was up when she spotted Cammi wandering down the sidewalk by herself.
“Sorry about that,” Kelly gushed before she looked down at her daughter. Instantly the redhead’s hands started moving, signing to her child. You scared me. You can’t just run away like that. Once the little girl signed back her apology, Kelly nodded and turned her attention back to Kay. “Thank you for finding her,” Kelly said and signed as a way to include Cammi in the conversation.
“Your guess is as good as mine,” she replied. These were the times Beth hated all of this. She loved having Kurt in her life but the extra stuff only made life harder on her. Her days of taking Kelly’s girls to the park were long gone. Or at least put on hold until all of this came to a stop. “I understand, Kelly. I don’t want that either. They deserve to be children and not have to deal with all of this mess. Now can I be a kid and not have to deal with all of this too?”
Kelly sighed heavily and glanced over at her cousin. This whole thing was a mess but they needed to cope with it. “I wish you could just go back to being a kid. Wouldn’t everything be easier?” She laughed then and shifted her weight from one foot to another. “Do you wanna go grab coffee? I feel like we have a ton of catching up to do.”

Saturdays were usually Kelly’s lazy days. This Saturday, Chad decided to take the two older girls to the park. He asked Kelly if she wanted to come, but brushed him off by letting him know she had plans with Anya. She just invited Anya over. It wasn’t a big deal, just a chance for the two of them to bond a little more. Furthermore, it wasn’t hard for Kelly to manage lunch with her birth mother while caring for her four and a half month old daughter. Celeste would likely sleep through the whole thing anyway.
Kelly had just finished picking up the living room. Cammi’s doll they purchased in New York was tossed on the couch. However, when the doorbell rang, it caused Celeste to start crying. Sighing heavily, Kelly moved to scoop her screaming infant into her arms. She rocked and hummed to the little girl as she made her way over to the door so she could let Anya in.
She had Celeste in her arms, rocking back in forth as she opened the door. “Hey,” she greeted while the baby screamed. “Come on in. Sorry, she doesn’t like the doorbell.” Looking down at the baby in her arms, Kelly sighed. “Celeste shhhh,” she murmured. “Look it’s just Anya. You love Anya.”
“Probably, do you have many cats?”
“No, I only have one.”
“I really don’t mean offense-
I’m pretty sure my cat doesn’t like you.”
“He probably just smells my cat,” Kelly replied with a shrug.
