william laughed when she made the comment about her energy. it was true, kennedy spent a lot of it on william. he couldn’t complain, though, he liked having her around. “it’d only be fair.” he insisted, handing over the coffee with a shot of carmel, just the way she liked it. he’d memorized her coffee order long, long ago. “other than working and spending every other waking moment by your side, i don’t have any plans.” he beamed over at her, the joking tone evident in his voice. “how about you, huh?” he asked. will looked around, seeing kids playing in a sprinkler in the park gave him an idea. “hey, you wanna head out to the lake? go swimming?”
somewhere along the line in high school kennedy questioned the time she spent with will. not because she didn’t enjoy it, but because she had always figured he had better things to do. to her, he was always in a different league. not that she’d ever admit that out loud, especially not to him. “i think the fact that we have the exact same answer to that question says enough so i won’t even repeat it,” she said with a teasing tone. but if she was honest, there wasn’t much else on her schedule as it currently stood. “you know i’m such a weak swimmer!” she exclaimed, the grin still evident on her face. “i think it amuses you too much, honestly. but a swim does sound pretty good right now, so i’ll have to put you being an asshole aside for the greater good,” kennedy sighed, looking up at him in defeat.
william walked through the square, the wind blowing so lightly in the may air, just enough to let the smell of the lilies wash over him. it was the first day of summer break for all of wilson and everyone seemed to be buzzing. there was a certain light about the city, everyone basking in the glow of the new opportunities that would follow them in the next three months. william, of course, was the same. wrapped up in his new found sense of purpose to make this summer one of the best ever. starting it off right, he walked up towards his friend with two cups of coffee, offering the one in his left hand out for grabs. “take a walk with me?” he asked with his ever present smile.
summer had always been a bittersweet moment for kennedy, even in high school she found herself settling in for a summer of long work days and fluorescent lighting. and yet, there was something about this summer that lit a new kind of excitement in her life. she’d finally finished the last of her final examinations in her online courses, and despite the distant call of her desk chair she couldn’t help but beam at the hustle and bustle about town at the first signs of summer. she would neither confirm nor deny the fact that the thought of spending another summer with her friend william had anything to do with it, and instead would focus on the coffee in his hand as he approached her. “i guess since you brought me coffee i should repay you with the absolute maximum amount of physical activity i have in me for a day,” she joked, smirking up at him before taking a long sip of her coffee. “that way you can tell me all about your exciting plans for the summer!”

“you are.” william assured her with a soft smile. there were little differences within each of his friends, things that he could share with one and not the other. feelings, thoughts… those were things he shared with kennedy. the two of them felt things on a deep, emotional level, more so than other people. they were more likely to take things to heart, and at times when it could all be too much, it was nice to fall back on someone who could truly understand what was wrong. there were no judgments, no teasing, just comfort and love. when she prompted him to talk about his life, will thought for a moment. “uh..” he drifted off. “i slept with cleo.” will said. “it wasn’t like, romantic or anything.” he assured her. “it was like, this one time fluke, like we both had to just get it out of our systems.” he said. will didn’t have romantic feelings for cleo and he hadn’t for a long time. will placed his hands in his pockets as he walked. “we talked about it and we both agreed we don’t really think of each other like that anymore, so.” he shrugged.
kennedy really wasn’t sure that she agreed with his reassurance, but she took the compliment quietly as she always did. it would be something she’d come back to and worry about later, and for now she’d focus on what was happening right now. she wasn’t the best at masking her reactions, and so when he told her about cleo she couldn’t help what stumbled out of her mouth first. “oh,” she said, surprise laced in her voice. kennedy had recently gone on a date of sorts with her own ex, but somehow she felt that it didn’t totally equate. “not like -- i didn’t mean for that to sound as judgy as it did,” she said, doing her best to backpedal as gracefully as she could. the last thing she wanted was to sound like she was the jealous best friend, even if it was partially true. kennedy refused for her life to be a john hughes movie. “at least you guys talked about it and are on the same page then,” she offered, trying to find the words to say before settling instead on a question. “are you sure that was really what it was about though? getting it out of your system? not to make you do some intense soul searching or anything, but...” she trailed off, unsure of where the sentence was going even when she started it.

“it’s impressive but it’s also scary, i mean just look at the world we live in. oh god that freaks me out as too.but then again a big part of the show would be lost if we didn’t get to see swiper doing his infamous swipe — her parents should know about this fox! eloise loves it too, i guess i’m just going to have to get into it with her and we can have in depth dora the explorer chats” sophia chuckles a little.
“i mean, that’s true. but if i focus on all the bad people that could hurt grace and matty i will drive myself crazy, so i try not to bring it into their cartoons. now barney? different story,” she mused, chuckling a little bit at the ridiculousness of their conversation. “i’m calling the authorities on swiper one of these days though, for sure. i’m definitely intrigued to hear eloise’s theories if i’m being honest. grace seems to think swiper is misunderstood, which worries me honestly.”

“Swoon over me!” Kai’s voice is upbeat, teasing, rough Mancunian accent colouring it just the right shade of him. He’s a little high, but coming down slow, and he’s eager to go out with Kennedy. They haven’t done anything stupid together in a while, so the timing is totally right. A smirk curls up one corner of his mouth, and he reaches to wrap her smaller hand delicately in his own, beginning to lead her down the pavement they’re currentl stood on. It won’t be far. “House part,” he snnounces, proudly, “should be fuckin’ sick, y'know? The guy throwing it is a lad!”
“I suppose you are just the right amount of dashing good looks and charm to warrant my swooning,” Kennedy admitted, a content sigh breaking her previous dreadful tone. She really did need a night out, away from her familial drama and emotional turmoil, and it really had been too long since she had let Kai talk her into something ridiculous. And so she took his hand and let a smile tug at her lips, welcoming the night ahead. “Well if he’s a lad then I’m definitely in,” she teased, laughing at his choice of words. “Don’t let me do anything that will haunt me for a few weeks,” she warned him lightly, her tone still one that erred on the side of adventure. “Only mildly haunted actions allowed -- two days of worrying maximum.”

mel had a free hour before she had to be at work so she decided to grab a coffee then make her way over there but it seemed the whole world had that same idea too. she taps her foot on the ground, she was going to be late if this line didn’t move. then she heard a familiar voice, she turns and gives kennedy a grin. “i agree, if we can make robots that can do the dishes, we should be able to sort out this problem”.
if there was one thing she wished she could change about herself, on this day she could choose to earn some patience. seeing mel in front of her brought her some ease as she let out an airy chuckle. “dude, we have robots for everything at this point, i just want to get my coffee quickly is that too much to ask?” she mused, watching the line move just enough to give her the smallest amount of hope. “although i suppose you could make an argument for actual coffee machines... but that wouldn’t let me be an angry millennial.”
