i love how shen qingqiu and shang qinghua are foils. in the beginning they're quite similar; both transmigrators, don't think of the characters as autonomous, and the motivations are the same: do whatever is needed to survive.

but the main difference between them is that shen qingqiu, for all his sarcasm and avoidance, would never choose saving himself over saving others. even when he pushes luo binghe into the abyss, it's not solely to save his own life— he wants to do what is 'ultimately best' for binghe's character progression and the story. but he learns the consequences of that mindset slowly, and then learns to accept people for what they truly are. despite his main goal supposedly being to save himself from becoming a human stick, he constantly sacrifices himself for others.

them having those core similarities really highlights shen yuan’s character. he's such a softie and his own inner monologue downplays it. love him.

sometimes I feel happy, and then I think about how hard shen jiu fought to escape his life at qiu manor and become a cultivator, only to end up exactly where he started: powerless and weak. he burnt that manor and he killed that man but its effects were still his demise. he never escaped.

I wonder if he ever realized that everything he’d done to protect himself was what undid him? if he ever realized how, in his attempts to forget his past, he became it?
