Kestrelstep’s JaggedClan - page one

Sunlight dappled the sandy earth. Around the black cat stood a small ring of others, gathering happily with their tails raised. The gray she-cat at the front spoke loudly, making her announcement before the Clan. JaggedClan greeted their new Deputy with the highest honor, but something was not entirely right.

Dahliafeather raised his head in pride, pale greenish eyes looking around at the gathered cats. Even Logfern, who usually glowered down at all the cats around her, seemed more amicable than usual. Her pelt was fluffed up like an angry owl, but her emerald eyes were softened.

Dahliafeather purred, looking towards Blizzardhope. She stood side by side with Stormfur, giving him a look that he could only describe as contentment. It had only been a few moons since her own warrior ceremony. Pinestar stepped forward and touched her nose to his forehead. Her expression was always more guarded than the others. Now, his heart dropped a bit at her blank face.

She flicked one ear, almost as if she was dismissing him, annoyed. He wondered what he could have done wrong to get this reaction. Her eyes drifted towards the others cats in the circle, especially towards Logfern. The former Deputy stared calmly back. Finally, Pinestar dipped her head and turned away, returning to her den beneath the stonespire. But the damage was done. Dahliafeather stood shaken. It was as if everyone in the circle was looking straight through him as strangers. Did Pinestar really approve of her own choice to make him Deputy? Did she just want Logfern back in his place?

He ground his teeth and dug his claws into the sandy earth, turning to face his clanmates and producing the best fake smile he could, dark tail raised. This is a day of celebration, he thought, I should give them what they want.

Kestrelstep’s JaggedClan - page two

Shinebounce trotted proudly across the sandy beach. Hercules and Rootthistle followed close behind. The two older toms seemed to fall behind her, letting her take the lead. Seven moons had already passed since she was made a warrior, and she was already much happier than she had ever been in RimeClan.

Her ear twitched at the sound of loud garbled chattering ahead of her. She signaled the lovebirds behind her, gesturing ahead and making a motion with her tail. They caught up quickly, following her to crouch at the edge of the forest, where the sand of the shore met the grass.

They followed her gaze and watched the twolegs bumble about on the rocks aimlessly. They were on a small peninsula of stone that stuck out into the water. Two of them sat perfectly still, holding tall twigs that seemed to trail spider silk into the water. The third stood and walked to a little box lying in the shallows, fidgeting around with something inside and chirruping in odd slurred chords. Another box lay close by, with some gray shapes visible inside, stinking of fish.

“Hey, look.” Hercules’ voice was a low rumble, nudging Rootthistle with a glitter of excitement in his eyes, “There’s fish in that box there.”

Shinebounce purred, unsheathing her claws with determination bubbling under her fur. Not long ago these same twolegs had left their food unguarded, and Plume’s patrol had happily taken it to feed half the Clan. Now was Shinebounce’s chance to finally prove herself to Logfern and Pinestar. They still didn’t trust her completely, she could tell by the shadows on their faces when they looked at her. But this would change everything.

She raised her tail, waited until the bumbling twolegs sauntered back over to the others, then lash it once and raced forward. Hercules thundered heavily beside her, while Rootthistle slipped ahead, haring forward. He skidded to a halt beside the fish box, grabbed a small fish from the top, and charged back towards the forest before Hercules and Shinebounce could catch up.

The twoleg suddenly loomed above the two, with its companions howling and waving their arms about angrily from their rocky perch. Hercules slashed at the twoleg as it moved to grab him, snatched a large fish and backed away menacingly, bushing out his long fur like an owl and snarling.

Shinebounce leapt towards the fish, but the twoleg was faster than she expected. It wrapped its meaty paws around her chest and leg and lifted her easily into the air. She shouted and kicked, wriggling out of its grip, but she hit the ground hard. The stones thudded against her side with a sickening sound. She tried to clamber to her feet, head spinning, but the twoleg pinned her down with its massive paw, snapping at snarling viciously.

Hercules watched in horror as the other two twolegs came running, waving their limbs and gesturing at the fish while they squawked.

“Run!” Shinebounce shouted at him as her consciousness started to slip, “Get Pinestar! I’ll be… I’ll be fine…”

Hercules turned and pelted for the trees. She heard him and Rootthistle shouting and hoped quietly that they wouldn’t blame themselves for her misstep. Tempting fate again, huh, Shinebounce? First with JaggedClan, now this. I just hope Pinestar won’t be too furious when I make it back.
