Stiles and Derek were seen together in the latest Teen Wolf trailer.
I am so angry right now and I’m gonna tell you why.
Because this show did literally everything right. And then it did everything wrong.
Because this show brought together these two amazing characters that played off each other so well because they snarked and bickered and talked shit but at the end of every day they were there for each other. They were torn apart by life and loyalties, but they never failed to put up and show up when it mattered.
Because after seeing the explosion of popularity of this pairing, they teased and winked and agreed, because Stiles and Derek were dynamite together. They put them together in interviews. Made videos of them cuddling. Capitalized on the fans’ successes.
Because they questioned Stiles’ sexuality so many times I lost count. Because they showed Derek being hurt by woman after woman. Because they let the characters flirt and show each other compassion.
Because Derek dreamed of Stiles like an anchor.
And then the fans grew powerful. The fans started trending Sterek tags instead of Teen Wolf tags. The fans started being written about more than the show. Sterek became the first association when people thought Teen Wolf. We won fan competitions against mega-ships and our love for our characters was too strong to be background noise.
So TPTB separated them on screen. TPTB banned Sterek questions at conventions. Refused to let actors sign Sterek art.
TPTB sent both Derek and Stiles through numerous, forced het relationships. TPTB tried to copy the dynamic that fans fell in love with, but substituted in a woman. TPTB drove Derek to such lows that they eventually had nowhere else to take him but off the show.
TPTB forcibily and intentionally worked to erase and silence the Sterek fandom at every turn. So we left, and we took our characters and our ratings with us.
And they pretended they didn’t care.
Because queer couples don’t get to happen organically. They don’t ever get to be the Oliver and Felicity or the Lucas and Peyton. They don’t get to be unplanned. It doesn’t matter how much the fans love them, or how they literally follow all of the same patterns as het couples. It never matters.
They bait, and then they switch, and they bait again.
Because they’re being so degrading and manipulative. Because they only care about us when they’re trying to save their own asses. Because even outside of Stiles and Derek, this show has always been an exercise in wasted potential.
But mostly I’m really really angry at the fluttery feeling in my chest when I saw them in the same frame again. I’m so absolutely furious with myself that I know that if they did it, if they actually went there, I’d go back. I’m raging that I would even be wondering what would happen if they went there because I know they won’t.
I’m so mad because they can’t seem to stop themselves from disappointing me, and I can’t seem to stop myself from falling for it every time.
