The Death of Leto Atreides after David's The Death of Socrates

The original painting depicts Socrates, having been sentenced to death, accepting a cup of poison hemlock from a disciple. Here, a guilt-ridden Dr. Yueh hands the poison cup to the Duke. Jessica and Liet Kynes look on stoicly, both powerless to stop his death. The Harkonnens, conversely, watch from the shadows with anticipation. At the foot of the bed, David portrays an older Plato, his eyes closed in sleep or remembrance. Plato was not present during this event and exists in the painting as a dreamer or narrator of the story. Similarly, Paul here may imagine his father's death, while the symbolic objects at his feet hint at the future of the Atreides line, his own path leading into the desert.
