Holiday in Chilmark
Rating: M Summary: AU College-era Mulder and Scully meet in Martha's Vineyard for Thanksgiving. [Placeholder until I can come up with a more eloquent summary.] <3
This is primarily a Thanksgiving fic, but due to illness and the general state of my mental health/stress lately, the chapters are likely going to be posted throughout this holiday season. Hopefully you all can still enjoy!
Unbeta'd and all errors are a result of my scattered stream of consciousness. Xx
Empty Homecoming (Chapter 1) [AO3]
The happiest moments of my life have been the few which I have passed at home in the bosom of my family. - Thomas Jefferson

2790 Vine Street, Chilmark, MA November 1984

āWell, shit,ā Mulder huffs out, his stomach souring as his distrusting mind slowly catches up with his more objective eyes. He stands comically alone in the dim kitchen, a single suitcase propped by his leg. The image of his childhood home before him is a sobering one, scarcely recognizable. With the exception of a handful of moving boxes littering some corners of the living room and entryway, the Mulder house looks like a spread from a ghost issue ofĀ Home & Garden. Itās cold and dark, new unused furniture and unfamiliar folderol advantageously located for maximum, artificial Feng shui.
He rubs a hand over his face, trying to process. Granted, even ignoring this less than favorable scenario, this was the last place he had wanted to be anyway; it had been Phoebeās twisted idea to roll up unannounced to his parentsā for the Thanksgiving holiday. Now that the two of them were no longer involved his decision to come here at all to negate the waste of an expensive airline ticket seems pointless. Heād been relieved at first when no one had come out to meet him when he had pulled the rental into the driveway, but his stomach had dropped when heād spotted the obnoxiously red āFor Saleā sign drilled into the soft grass at the edge of the sidewalk.
Standing now in the kitchen surrounded by the emptied remnants of his youthful memoriesāsome good, mostly badāwith no family in sight, he feels like a fool.
āYo, Mulder!ā He hears a light rap at the door and he is surprised but not displeased to see a familiar face peeking in from behind the unlocked screen door. He smiles despite the empty scene around him. Scrawny, with dirty blond hair and thick glasses, Patrick Thompson is as much the physical opposite to himself as anybody could be. His friend lets himself in, greeting Mulder with a quick handshake and a brief but genuine hug. The tightness in Mulderās chest loosens a small amount. His boyhood friend has been amongst the select few from Marthaās Vineyard heās bothered to remain in touch with since attending Oxford, the two of them exchanging an occasional long distance phone call every few months or so.
āI thought I saw you sneaking in, manāI didnāt know youād be in town for Thanksgiving.ā
āIt was supposed to be a surprise,ā Mulder grimaces, scratching the back of his head as his eyes grace the mockingly too-perfect scene surrounding them, āSeems like I was in for a surprise myself, I guess.ā
Patās face falls, looking slightly rocked, āShit man, I thought you knew.ā
āYeah, wellā¦itās not like I really call my folks much. Last I heard Mom is moving to Greenwich, so Iām sure it doesnāt make much sense to keep the place.ā
Patās forehead creases in obvious sympathy.
āYou wanna come to Momās for Thanksgiving? Sheās hosting for the neighborhood this year and I know sheād love to see you.ā
āI donāt know, Pat. I think I gotta figure out what Iām gonna do with myself. Iām supposed to be in town till next Monday.ā
Pat reaches out, awkwardly squeezing his shoulder in consolation, āNo Phoebe, huh?ā
Mulder shrugs, at this point in time unwilling to discuss the particulars with his friend. He and Pat have always been close, but not close enough to tell him about walking in on Phoebe with two men in his bed less than ten days ago. Things hadnāt been great for them for a while, and he hates that the situation hadnāt even surprised him. Heās still been trying to process how the cheating feels like his fault.
āItās whatever,ā he lies.
āYou wanna catch a beer tonight after you settle in?ā His friend posits tentatively, āIām helping Mom get the house clean for hosting but I should be free around 6.ā
āYeah, sure, just call the home phone. Not really planning on going anywhere today.ā
āCool. You really should come over Thursday, though. Pretty sure some chicks from out of town are coming, some Navy brats. Think about it, eh?ā
Pat gives him a smack on the back and strides out, leaving Mulder to his thoughts. The slamming screen door as his friend leaves makes him flinch.
xxxv. public/semi public sex
"Mulderāwaitā"
"Mm, what?" to his credit, he stops fiddling with the button of her form-fitting jeans, but his mouth is still nibbling on her earlobe as he presses her against the kitchen wall. Her eyelids flutter for a moment as the heat of his breath trickles down her neck and between her legs.
It's been 36 hours. 36 hours since he's kissed her, stroked her skin, made her come. 36 hours since she felt the mouthwatering salt of him on her tongue, heard his voice moaning how warm and good she feels.
"What, what?" she chuckles, almost amazed at his bold lack of propriety (or his bold abundance of a wish for death) in her eldest brother's home, "This is not the time or the place."
"I miss you," he husks, his finger tracing the hem of her waistline and tickling her hip. She shivers as goosebumps rise all over her body and she feels warmth pooling in her belly. God, how is she this aroused already? She's never had a relationship before where the sex has fed on fulfillment.
"I've been with you all week," she needlessly reminds him, "I shouldn'tāmy brother is here. Half of the neighborhoodĀ is here."
"Mm, I know," he almost moans it, smoothly pulling her zipper down and sliding a flat hand into her panties. She'd scold him if his touch didn't immediately make her melt, make her eyes roll into the back of her head. Tara laughs in the living room next door and she feels his course, gentle fingertips slide in between her lips.
If anyone were to walk in right now, Mulder would have scant moments to pull his hand away. It would be obvious what he's doing to her, even with the bulk of him blocking almost all of her from the view of the partially closed kitchen door. The thought immediately brings a rush of fluid between her legs. Before she has a chance to be horrified by her physical response, he's slid her wetness up to the bead of her clit and softly rubs. She gnaws on her lip, hard, to keep from gasping, her posture stiffening in pleasure.
"Oh, Scully," he pulls back just enough so she can see his mischievous grin. Damn him, "You bad, bad girl."
Your take on the Knicks shirt??
Scully doesnāt argue when Mulder tells her they have to leave the motel. Ā She doesnāt even ask questions. Ā She just slides out of bed and reaches for her suitcase. Ā Mulder isnāt looking at her bare legs as she bends over, of course heās not (okay, maybe he is, but she knows what to expect by now), but as her nightshirt rides up her bare thighs, he catches a glimpse of blue and orange.
āScully, what are you wearing?ā he asks.
She straightens up. Ā "Itās commonly known as a nightshirt, Mulder. Ā Sometimes pajamas just seem too fussy to pack.ā Ā
āNot the shirt,ā he says. Ā "Under the shirt.ā
She crossed her arms over her chest and raises one eyebrow at him. Ā "Are you trying to consort with me while on assignment, Agent? Ā Because that seems like a personal question.ā Ā She licks her lips, which doesnāt at all hide her smile. Ā
āIām a trained investigator,ā he says. Ā "And I canāt help but notice that you appear to be wearing New York Knicks boxers, Agent Scully.ā
āDo you have jurisdiction over my undergarments?ā she teases. Ā
āWeāve crossed state lines together,ā he says. Ā "That makes this a matter of federal interest.ā
"Federal interest,ā she murmurs in a warm, husky voice. Ā "I see.ā
"I donāt recall you being a New York Knicks fan, Scully,ā he says. Ā "I do recall personally owning a pair of New York Knicks boxers, which I now canāt remember having seen in the lastā¦while.ā
"Youād think such a passionate fan would keep better track of his merchandise,ā Scully tells him, turning away. Ā This time when she bends to pick up a pair of shoes, sheās definitely taking no pains to stop her shirt from hitching up and showing the hem of his Knicks boxers.
He reaches out to tug at her shirt and she playfully pushes his hand away. Ā "Not without a warrant, Agent,ā she says, her smile almost a grin. Ā
"Youāre having fun with this, arenāt you?ā he asks.
āI certainly am,ā she says. Ā
āWhat if I were to demand that you take those off right now?ā he asks. Ā
āIād tell you you need a better line than that to get me out of my clothes,ā she says with a wink.
āMy clothes,ā he grumbles. Ā
āI donāt seem to recall this kind of resistance when I wore your Knicks t-shirt,ā she says, stepping closer to him. Ā Sheās so short in her bare feet. Ā He has to tilt his head to gaze down at her.
āThat was different,ā he says.
āWas it,ā she says. Ā "For what reason, I wonder. Ā Maybe because your Knicks t-shirt was worn so thin it was almost transparent?ā
"Maybe,ā he says.
āOr was it because you had the privilege of taking the Knicks t-shirt off of me on several occasions?ā she says, pretending to be thoughtful even as her fingers graze the hem of his decidedly non-Knicks shirt. Ā Scullyās always had a knack for hands-on learning. Ā
āMight be that,ā he allows, his mind starting to wander further and further south. Ā "Maybe itās just that we werenāt on a case.ā
"We were that one time,ā she says, and the shiver in her voice runs up and down his spine. Ā
āOh,ā he says, and has to clear his throat. Ā "Yeah. Ā Just that one time.ā
"But I suppose,ā she says, āif you really want them backā¦.ā Ā Sheās almost pressed against him, her fingers splayed over his belly. Ā Her shoulders tilt oddly, and it takes him a moment to realize that her free hand has slipped under her nightshirt to tug at the boxers. Ā They fall to the carpet at her feet with a little whooshing noise. Ā She steps neatly out of them, leaving them on the floor in front of him. Ā
āThere you are,ā she says. Ā
āYou know what,ā he says, āIāll get those back from you later.ā
āWhatever you want, Mulder,ā she says, smirking at her suitcase. Ā
He hesitates, then picks up the boxers and drapes them over the eyes of the fox on the wall. Ā "How longās it take to get a warrant in this town, Scully?ā he asks. Ā "I ask as a professional investigator, just in case I uncover any other mysteries within my jurisdiction.ā
āDepends on whoās asking,ā she tells him. Ā "But I think youāve got a good shot.ā
"Iāll check back,ā he says. Ā "After weāve checked out.ā
"Iāll try not to skip town before you have the chance to conclude your investigation,ā she tells him, and itās like the time they spent apart was only the blink of an eye. Ā Ā
āSee that you donāt,ā he says.
āGive me ten minutes,ā she tells him, hooking a pair of impractical-looking lace-trimmed underwear out of her suitcase. Ā "Although I have to say this seedy motel is bringing back some memories.ā
"Good ones?ā he asks.
She licks her lips again as she studies him. Ā "Good enough.ā
"Ten minutes,ā he says. Ā "Weāll find a slightly less suspect dump. Ā Itāll feel just like home.ā Ā
He walks out of her room and closes the door behind himself. Ā "Just like the old days,ā he murmurs to himself. Ā "For better or for worse.ā
I contemplated for a second that David Duchovny might have Chris Carter as a guest on his podcast about failure. Then I realized CC has that insane, delusional white man confidence that even if DD straight up asked if he considered certain creative decisions along the way in TXF failures (like idk, the whole William thing, the breakup, the lack of a show bible, IWTB as a whole), CC would just be like "nope!" And DD would be like "ok...this episode was sponsored by Blue Apron." and then it would just end. shortest podcast episode ever.
X-Files dialogue is just normal, natural conversation about a crime or scientific theory between two people.
And then Mulder and Scully:
wheeeere is your personal space. WHERE IS HR? Hello? DO PEOPLE JUST HAVE THEM ON SPEED DIAL?
The X-Files But It's Actually
Continuing in the spirit of unhinged txf content i made in 2018 that never saw the light of day but I'm posting now cause it's the 30th anniversary, I hereby present to you: The X-Files But It's Actually. Five years ago the revival had me so shook that I opened up photoshop started a whole terrible manip series where I would just questionably alter txf screenshots and turn them into intentionally Bad posters for other shows/movies ?? The originals are long since lost to time, so these are remade specially with love and affection as best as I remember them. <3

the x files is like what if you were driven to the brink by forces you couldnāt begin to endure alone and then your coworker was like heyyyy at the brink all by yourself cutie? looks pretty cool⦠can i join you ;) and the people who pushed you to the brink were like ah fuck theyre unionising
the way to ārewatchā āthe x filesā is to watch it relentlessly for 3 formative years of ur life, go cold turkey for 4 more years, then get stoned and watch a midseason mythology episode so completely defamiliarized that ur synapses start to fritz out over the noirish slant of neon & the plot real estate eaten up by scuzzy paranoia & the sheer scale of gillian andersonās massive fucking b-movie horror girl peepers. not writing from experience btw
