A CANADIAN VAMPIRE IN POLAND: It’s the 1980s, and Joseph “Jo” Leloup, an Acadian-Canadian Trotskyist from New Brunswick born to a Jewish mother and a Mi’kmaq father, moves to the Polish People’s Republic after turning 18 to get away from his problems in his grandparents’ now-communist homeland. There, he is attacked and turned by Wolfgang, a German vampire who runs a coven controversial among European vampires for his low ages of turning. Joseph reluctantly joins the coven, clashing with Helmuth, a 83-year-old vampire who served in World War I and was turned into a vampire by Wolfgang at 22 as a form of revenge against a vampire hunter, Agnès, who had groomed him since he was a teenager. Joseph stays largely due to his feelings towards Mietek, Helmuth’s 16-year-old human “girlfriend” from Trójmiasto who dreams of leaving Poland and his overbearing Citizen’s Militia member father for California to get a sex change and live as a man.
