What does it cost to build your own system?

That depends on what you’re willing to spend!

Technically, all of the items I’ve listed above can be thrifted, second-hand or salvaged (provided they are thoroughly sanitized). I had a total budget of $750 US and I scraped underneath it, but only just!

I designed my own system to fit my needs but also primarily to be expandable and flexible (in the event that I moved).

If you check the images above, you’ll see that the most expensive part of the whole operation was the fish tanks!

I bought baby goldfish from a local pet store, and they were less than a quarter each.

I started with 10, but two died in the first week. A month later, I lost another. 

Today, I have a total of 8 fish (one being gifted from a friend) and they are growing large and happy!
