So, I’ve been thinking about some of the lore theories in Dark Souls III, inspired by @vaatividya and his Dark Souls lore videos (will post link to reference video at the end).
I was musing about Oceiros the Consumed King and his relations with his wife and children. We know Oceiros had become obsessed with dragons and their sorcery and I believe this transformation into the monstrosity he became was a gradual thing, and I think this is reflected in his children and how he wanted to create a perfect heir to link the fire.
Lorian, the eldest, appears to be a relatively normal human. Lothric is where things get a little interesting. If one looks closely, he has long hands with taloned fingers, not dissimilar to how Oceiros’ hands look when you encounter him in his garden.

My theory is that Lothric was a ‘failed’ hybrid, as the lore states that the royal family was obsessed with creating an heir to link the fire, even resorting to…questionable means. It’s entirely possible that Oceiros looked upon both his elder sons with distaste because they were not what he wanted. Lothric was a failure, and it was no doubt his bastardized genetics that resulted in him being sickly and frail. It’s at this point I think Oceiros’ influence was starting to wane because of his sanity slippage. Lothric was indeed loved and cared for, probably due in part to his mother. I have this sneaking suspicion that if Oceiros had a choice, he probably would have left Lothric to die in the swamp, finding him an embarrassment and a waste of space. This may also be one of the reasons that Lothric rejected his duty as a Lord of Cinder, along with the influence of the scholars.
It’s also suggested that Gertrude, the woman who taught miracles to the Angelic Knights, was a child of the queen. A theory suggests that the cage in the high castle is where Gertrude was kept and that the corpse within is hers. This one is tricky because Gertrude isn’t discussed as avidly within the lore, but I think that once Oceiros realized what power Gertrude had access to and the blessings she had received, he was the one who locked her in the cage out of fear that she would be chosen for the heir instead of his desired dragon hybrid.
Then Ocelotte was born, and according to Oceiros, Ocelotte was the ideal dragon hybrid. However I believe that after Ocelotte was born, the queen fled with the child, leaving Oceiros to completely dissolve into insanity. The crying heard during the duration of the battle may or may not be some demonic-magic reflection of Ocerios’ madness and mourning for the loss of what he had strived so hard to create.
When the player arrives in the arena, Oceiros comments that he was expecting someone to either know or be looking for a child such as Ocelotte (which the character most likely did not, especially if you’re me and you’d just end up there by accident). He speaks of Ocelotte, or his delusion thereof, like an object, a precious treasure that he will not let go.
Disturbingly enough, one of the deleted audio files for the boss fight with Oceiros was a baby’s cry as it was being trampled, presumably during the second phase where Oceiros stopped acting as if he was protecting something but instead animalistically protecting himself. There is no love here, the hybrid child was a means to an end, a means to prove himself right and to prove that his studies of the magic of Seath the Scaleless were indeed productive and true.
