The world was slipping away. You could feel the warmth of your blood seeping through Adrian’s trembling fingers as he desperately pressed against your wound, his hands slick and shaking. His amber eyes, usually so composed, were wide with panic, glistening with unshed tears. He was speaking, his voice cracking, but you could barely hear him over the dull roar in your ears.
“Stay with me,” he pleaded, his breath uneven. “Please, stay with me.”
You reached up weakly, brushing his pale cheek with bloodstained fingers. “Adrian…” you whispered, your voice fragile. “Thank you for—”
"No," he interrupted sharply, his breath shuddering. "None of that. Don't—don’t you dare." His voice cracked, and the tears he had been fighting finally fell, slipping down his pale face. "You're going to be fine. Just... just hold on."
You smiled faintly. "I love you," you murmured, moving a few strands of his long almost white hair out of his face with the last of your strength. Your fingers barely had the energy to hold on. "So much."
"Don’t." His voice cracked as he shook his head. "Don’t say goodbye. You shouldn’t have—" A choked sob escaped him. "Damn it, you foolish woman. You stupid, reckless—" He couldn’t finish. He clutched you closer, cradling your head. Adrian let out another choked sound, something between a sob and a gasp. He pressed his forehead to yours, his body curling around you as if he could shield you from the inevitable.
"I need you," he said, his voice raw, stripped of all the careful poise he usually carried. "Without you, I will go mad. You—you don’t understand what you’ve given me. Your existence has brought me back to life. And now you’re slipping away."
"You’ll be alright my love," you whispered. "You always are."
"No." He pulled back slightly, looking at you, his expression unreadable beneath the sorrow. Something darker flickered behind his golden eyes.
You recognized it a moment too late.
His hands shook as they cradled you. His lips brushed against your temple, then your forehead. Then he whispered, “Forgive me.”
You barely had time to process the words before he pulled you closer, his face buried in the crook of your neck.
A sharp, searing pain tore through your throat as his fangs sank in. A strangled scream escaped your lips, your fingers weakly grasping at him, trying to push him away, but he held you firmly against himself.
“Please,” you gasped, tears slipping down your face. “Adrian—don’t—”
But he only whispered apologies between each desperate pull of your blood.
Then, as suddenly as it began, it stopped. His teeth left your skin, and he lifted his head, his mouth stained crimson, his pale eyebrows furrowed, expression utterly shattered.
You barely had the strength to keep your eyes open.
“No,” you whimpered, your voice barely there. “I don’t want this please…”
Adrian let out a ragged breath, pain flickering across his face. “I know,” he said brokenly. “I know, my love.”
With trembling hands, he brought his wrist to his mouth and bit down, tearing into his own flesh until dark blood welled up. You turned your head away, pressing your lips together as tightly as you could.
“I’m so sorry my love,” he said again, and then his bloodstained fingers gripped your jaw, forcing your mouth open.
The moment his blood touched your tongue, your body rebelled. It burned. A violent heat coursed through your veins, spreading like wildfire, consuming the last remnants of your mortality. You choked, your body seizing, your mind reeling as the transformation took hold.
Adrian held you through it, whispering apologies, words of love, reassurances—none of which you could process. The pain was unbearable, Adrian cradled you as your body stiffened, as your heartbeat faltered and faded, as your last breath left your lips.
And then, the hunger came.
