SDR2 Stuff #5.1 - Komaeda Nagito [FT5]
Part 5 of the free time translation revisions! Apologies for the delay on this one; a few things happening IRL led to a pretty lengthy delay on this one, unfortunately. As always, a major thanks to Koori for her tremendous help with this!
Like FT2, 3 and 4, this one is only available after Chapter 1. Unlike these three, it’s a lot more blatantly spoilery for that chapter, so you’ll definitely want to finish it before reading this.
As usual, this post’s pretty large, so it might take a while to load. The translation notes this time are a bit long, too, but please make sure to read them! They’re a lot more important this time than for the previous events.
Oh, and even if you usually don’t listen to the voice clips… do that this time. They’re a bit more important for this event than they were during the other four.

"Komaeda- kun," She said in a irritated tone. "Have you read ‘Diary of a Madman’ by Lu Xun?" She tapped her foot irritably. This conversation was getting old, but she was not going to back down anytime soon.
"Can't say I have..." He looked back up at Junko and unfolded his arms. The irritation was obvious in her voice, and as much as he didn't like her opinions, he didn't really want to cause a scene in the library and get banned.
"However I am aware of it...cannibalism, yes? Why do you ask, Enoshima-san? Are you recommending it to me?"

"Oh… No of course not. I haven’t actually played with anyone yet… They all want to do their own thing. I think.. they also don’t like me always beating them..Hm. But yes, I would like to play." They offered to the luck boy, it was an odd talent and Chiaki hadn’t seen what it really ‘does’. This would possibly be an interesting experiment to both experience his talent and get to know him better.
He pulled the console from his pocket upon their agreement to play. "I'm afraid I'm not very competitive, so losing doesn't mean all that much to me...ah but I haven't actually ever lost before, so I suppose that must mean I'm pretty good?"
He powered up the 3DS and started the game. "If you'd like to look through my PC boxes before we play to get an idea of what I have, that's totally fine!"

"Air of intent…?” She paused a moment. “… It’s been said that I look threatening through my appearance and demeanor only. However, it is rare that I intend to do anything. It is only when I must that I raise my sword, and never to an animal,” she said, narrowing her eyes at Komaeda.
"… You’re not very tactful, are you? … In any case… How would I go about concealing this air of intent?”
Not very tactful? She was probably right. Komaeda grew slightly more frantic...his message wasn't going through to Peko at all.
"That's not what I!--Pekoyama-san...you always have a weapon with you, yes? Even without the intention of drawing it, I'm sure approaching an animal while carrying it will scare them off...or maybe you just have bad luck in choosing your animals! Lots of smaller breeds are very skittish, I'm sure if you got close to say...a big fluffy dog then it wouldn't flee from you!"
Was that enough to convince her of what he really meant? Komaeda's obviously flustered demeanor may help get his intention across...or so he hoped anyway.
Sorry if I don’t understand you. Maybe I’m just incapable around such talented people… Hmph.
I’m sure I can. Just because I’m a reserve student doesn’t mean I don’t have any diligence. I’ll just have to put in a little more effort than all of you is all, even if it doesn’t result as well. I’ll show you especially, Komaeda…. You’ll see I’m worthy for your whole kazoo about your story of Luck.

"—I..ah…."
He was rendered a speechless for a moment, his mouth agape with an answer but none came out..and his face contorted to that of slight confusion. He was about to agree with him, he felt really lucky to be able to go to Hope’s Peak, seeing it was one of the most famous schools in the world. An opportunity most kids could only dream of.
But.
..”pillars of hope”? What could he mean by—..does he mean surrounded by talented people?
..he quickly nodded, offering him a small smile, “..I guess you could consider it a great opportunity, Komaeda-kun..but.. ” he chuckled a little, “t-that’s certainly a different way of putting it..” In all honesty, he would put ‘overwhelming’ in the place of a ‘blessing’, but to each their own, right?
So Naegi didn't really understand either. "You haven't been here all that long, not as long as I have at the least, so maybe you just don't appreciate it the way I do yet...or maybe you never will, I do have a talent for not being able to explain myself..." His words quietened towards the end of his sentence and his gaze dropped for a second. Someone like Naegi -nothing more than an honorary random- should be able to understand but...
"Maybe you're just too engrossed in trying to fit in...maybe you don't want to put your peers on pedestals in the hope that you'll get on with them better. I understand that much, I suppose." He spoke quickly and quietly but retained something akin to coherence, though it was more like he was trying to convince himself than Naegi.
The washing machine Komaeda was using stopped, and with a quick "excuse me" he approached it and set it to dry. This would probably take at least an other hour but would Naegi be willing to stay and chat that long, now that it was clear they were on different pages.
☆;— “W-Well…I’m not sure? M-My head hurts and I-I don’t want to go alone. I-I don’t really like nurses, or doctors. Or anything medical. ”
☆;— “So, thank you Komaeda-kun…”
Ah...so that was it.
"It's not a problem! We're already on the ground floor so I'll just lead the way."
"The bright pink door is a little tacky isn't it..? Oh! I don't know if it's alright for me to suggest this but if you'd like me to come inside with you as well, I'd be happy to."

Celes stared at him, and tossed the book over as she rolled her eyes.
"Are you blind or just plain stupid? Honestly."
He took a closer look at the words on the page and blinked. Ah...it was English. Not being able to tell that was somewhat unnerving to Komaeda...was he forgetting his own knowledge? He didn't let his feelings show, however.
"Celes-san...would you mind telling me the name of that book?"

She sighed in irritation and crossed her arms across her chest.”Actually, they’re all not theories; they’re the truth in my eyes.” She mumbled. She glanced at him in irritation. "So, what exactly make my idea of hope "wrong", Komaeda-kun?" She said irritably. "Everything is in balance, therefore there’s always that balance and nothing ever overflows nor crosses the line. Therefore, there’s that constant yin and yang. I believe hopefulness is equally the same as hope." She glared at him. "And also, I am not wasting my intelligence on these theories whenever there’s evidence. Besides, don’t great minds tend to disagree but also think alike?"
"You don't seem to understand what true "hope" actually is...imagine if it were written in english, it would be worthy of an uppercase 'H'...similar to how the kanji "kibo" carries more significance than the hiragana spelling "ki-bo"...I would liken your hope to hiragana, Enoshima-san. Whereas my hope -true hope- is the kanji writing, or the uppercase 'H'." Komaeda paused to catch his breath, he had spoken way too quickly.
"Yin and yang balance each other because they are equal...but hope and despair are not...your "hope" may be equal to despair but that renders it meander in the face of the ultimate hope..." His face remained neutral, but the light in his eyes had dulled as if he no longer cared to carry on the discussion. There was no way she was ever going to see it his way.
"I suppose I'm not good enough when it comes to explaining hope though...so I can't really blame you for not understanding however, I still think you should consider that you are actually wrong."
He sighed. "As for theories well, they don't really prove anything do they? Cite them as evidence all you like but the real truth is that none of us really know...however that I understand hope and cannot see any in Poe's work should be enough."
