thinking about that one experiment where they put people in a room with a button that shocks them, let them discover that it shocked them & verbalize their desire to not press the button again, and then left them in the room until they invariably pressed the button out of boredom. the takeaway was that boredom is more painful than physical pain, but my takeaway is that there is something entertaining about being hurt, making your brain go.
