A perspective on Athur and Ayaka relationship.
I’ve seen a few rambling about this ship ever since that Arthur got implemented in fgo and that line change. So I ought to put in my two cent in defense of Nasu’s original work to clear out some misconception.
1. Arthur and child Ayaka relationship is questionable.
This is a miscomprehension, Arthur Never fell in love with the child Ayaka, he simply see her as his savior and has a desire to protect her. Like in Stay Night, their actual romance doesn't start to bloom until the later half of the story. (this is clearly stated in the material)
Ayaka did not fall in love with Arthur when they first met, she even told him to screw off, until she realize she has feeling for him midway of the story.
Another point is that Arthur swore his loyalty to Ayaka as a Knight, it was never mentioned that he want to be her father. Even Ayaka’s father stated that “if only a knight would be by her side,” the parenthood was never established in the first place. (People probably read this up from the wiki?)
To back that up, Arthur admitted that he has never experience the role of a father before (in reference to Mordred,) so the idea of fatherhood never spun around his mind when he met Ayaka. He’s an airhead at heart, and he simply want to protect her.
In fact, he has only spent very little time with her younger-self to build that kind of bond, whereas, the time he spent with the older Ayaka is significantly longer.
If their relationship consider to that of a lolicon wet dream and then I’m going to have to remind you that Artoria’s mental age should be close to an aged adult, and that should makes Shirou and Artoria age gap feels incredibly awkward when all of the sudden Artoria become a girl after spending a night with Shirou. The same goes for Arthur, but that’s not really the point here. Nasu build their relationship upon the concept of two people struggling against their own fate and learn to love each other by mending each other’s flaws. Both Artoria and Arthur gave up their humanity to become a king, and this void in their hearts are restored upon crossing their fate with Shirou/Ayaka.
The conception of their relationship is constructed gradually during Prototype, it was never about love at first sight to begin with.
2. Ayaka is an Otome heroine so it doesnt matter which relationship is canon or noncanon.
Again, please reread prototype material. The Old fate and Prototype was never meant to be a a Reverse Harem game in the first place. It started out as a stand alone romance novel about boy meet girl. The whole VN things never set off until they decided to switch the MC gender for profit sake. The only thing I see that pushed the whole Otome game is the Hanafuda event where her harem fighting over each other on who get to share room with her. It’s obviously written in the pretense of a comedy skit.
Nothing has set in stone to be honest. Both Ayaka and Arthur are incomplete character. Ayaka development is neglected, and Arthur’s actual personality in prototype is yet to be shown. Their bond is established, but the basis for their relationship is no where to be found. Nasu and Sakurai have only dropping hints here and there, but most of them aren’t the straightforward answer that we want; however, they were closer to the truth. I dont know why they keep such a tight lid on Prototype, Protocu is silenced when Arthur was implemented, Sakurai’s didn’t really go into detail about it in fragment (beside Manaka wanking,) Nasu said that he’s collecting resources from Prototype, yet nothing about it has been revealed.
