COLORIST REEL - FALL 2015
YOPLAIT - SPELLING BEE (Airhorn, Agency)
This agency version of Spelling Bee, directed by Nick Spooner, has such a beautifully lit location for a comedy spot, and has plenty of in-camera atmosphere and color contrast that was not fleshed out in the original version. That I felt obligated to crack this spot open and delve back into the pixels to wring out all the depth of color and atmosphere I could pull out. There was clearly a lot there!
GREY'S ANATOMY - ABC
Grey's Anatomy Promo was directed by Philip Boston. This is one of my favorite spots. It was a real challenge to grade because we needed to seamlessly marry footage from the show with footage that was shot just for the promo for the season finale.
JEEP - SinSUV
Directed by Tom Gatsoulis and written by copywriter/art director, Arty Tan. This spot was shot over two days in the high desert outside Los Angeles on two Alexa cameras for atSwim.
The weather on the shoot was was typically unpredictable high desert fair. Bright sunny skies for one setup, cloudy and overcast for the next.
Careful attention to highlights, the use of lens flairs and sky replacement created a seamless look for the spot.
RAPALA - VIRAL
Rapala, “Viral,” directed by Seth Townsend. It was filmed in and around central Florida, at 19 various locations. The crew had their work cut out for them with the challenge of transforming the surrounding areas to resemble Sri Lanka, New York City, Finland, and other global locations.
ACURA - I'M IN TOWN
Acura TSX I'm In Town was directed by Martin Brierley for my friends at atSwim.tv. In the last few years I have done the color grading, visual effects and finishing on a number of spots for Acura produced by Rebecca Wray and Daniel Huml of Milk & Honey Films.
USA HOOPS
Directed by Kurt Spenser for Radley Studios. This David Brown agency spot captures the beauty and grit of the USA Hoops urban basketball program.
We created three looks the for the spot. A low contrast film look. A 16mm inspired high contrast black & white look, and a high contrast color look to balance the black and white.
These three looks come together to give the spot a heightened emotional dynamic the draws you into the intensity the youth and coaches bring to the program, the sport, and their community.
SALOMON - KILLER FIT
Salomon Killer Fit was the brain child spawned by the fortuitous (and at times clandestine) meeting of the creative team of Brad Steward, Will Hartman, Steve Schofield and Stephen Hens.
HEART ATTACK - FOXSPORTS
This spot was part of a promo campaign for Foxpsorts directed by Tom Gatsoulis. The spot was shot on 16mm and then scanned to DPX for grading.
ACURA - FIRST DRIVE
Acura TL First Drive was directed by director/DP, Brian Johnson. This is one of the three spots for Acura we have collaborated together on for production company atSwim. The team at atSwim did five of these new media spots in the last few years for interactive agency Genex. The team at Genex and AtSwim brought me back to do five ore spots for the same campaign.
THUNDER VALLEY CASINO - DECAPITATOR
Thunder Valley Casinos Decapitator is one of the 15 spot campaign I graded and conformed out of Sacramento agency MeringCarson. The campaigned was directed by Joe Schaak.
NEWSDAY - EULOGY
Newsday Eulogy was directed by Nick Spooner. This version of Eulogy is the director's cut of the original spot produced by agency Machinery Philadelphia.
I approached the grading of the spot with the idea to make it feel more like a feature film then a hi-key broadcast spot. I gave it a much richer and more contrasty look than was done for the broadcast version.
The end result makes you feel like you are sitting in a southern baptist church on a scorching hot Sunday morning.
METRO CABLE - LONG LINE
This spot for Metro Cable is Nick Spooner's director's cut of the broadcast version that originally aired. The the spot was produced by Machinery Philadelphia.
FIRST5 LA - READING
Reading was one of 20 spots I did for the "Good Parenting" initiative for First 5 LA. First 5 LA is a non-profit advocacy organization that focuses on childhood development during the first five years of a child's life. Their programs are designed to educate parents and the community about the importance of healthy eating, safe play places and proper medical care for children.
The campaign was directed by Danny Trachtenberg. Danny is a filmmaker and video podcast host from the Philadelphia suburbs who currently resides in the Los Angeles metro area. He is one of the three hosts of The Totally Rad Show and a former co-host of Geekdrome. Both programs are hosted at Revision3.
JACKSONVILLE ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE - TALKING HURT
This three spot campaign was directed by Joe Schaak for 3|Atlanta.
When it came time to create the look for all three spots we went with a contrasty and desaturated vibe that would give the campaign a unique feel, but stay out of the way of the comedy.
NEWSDAY - DOCTOR
Newsday Doctor was directed by Nick Spooner. This version of Doctor is the director's cut of the original spot that was produced by agency Machinery Philadephia. Doctor is the second spot from this campaign. The first spot Eulogy is also posted on my page.
The director and I wanted to make the viewer feel as uncomfortable as possible with this spot. To achieve this we chose a sickening color palette of cyan and yellow.
JOHNSONVILLE BRATTS - TONGS
Johnsonville Bratts Tongs is the third of four spots I did for Cramer-Kresselt, Milwaukee, as part of the campaign to promote the Brattenders: Defenders of the Grill Facebook contest.
