self-expression   and   metropolis   ⸻

conner   kent   moves   to   metropolis   shortly   after   his   revival   after   living   for   a   summer   with   the   kent   family   at   the   age   of   seventeen   ⸺   and   begins   their   exploration   into   different   types   of   individuality   and   how   fashion   is   a   form   of   expression;   all   new   concepts   that   he's   finally   able   to   explore   outside   of   having   brands   as   superboy.   conner   begins   to   learn   to   sew,   begins   buying   books   and   studying   fashion   trends   throughout   the   years;   namely   alternative   genres   as   they   try   to   find   their   way   in   the   world.

gemworld   comes   and   goes   and   conner   throws   themselves   back   into   expression   in   the   only   way   they   do   ⸺   except   this   time   they   start   posting   online   how-tos   and   explanations   on   how   they   craft   and   build   their   own   outfits;   the   fundamentals   of   what   builds   an   outfit   and   how   to   save   money   and   still   express   themselves   fully.   they   gain   a   small   following   ⸺   you   can   find   them   at   local   flea   markets   and   clothing   swap   days   just   hanging   around.   it's   one   of   their   first   real   senses   of   community   and   something   they   still   cherish   to   this   day.   here's   a   thread   of   the   fashion   vibes   i   see   for   conner.

writing   styles:   conner   v.   superboy   ⸻

i   wanted   to   make   this   quick   little   post   on   how   i   differentiate   some   writing   styles   -   namely   the   way   i   differentiate   writing   kon   as   his   civilian   persona   "conner   kent"   versus   when   i'm   writing   them   as   superboy,   the   outward   superhero   persona.   this   is   just   a   brief   headcanon   on   what   to   expect   when   i'm   writing   them   and   why   i'm   even   bothering   to   write   this   in   the   first   place.

conner   kent.   whenever   conner   is   outside   of   the   super   element   and   doesn't   have   to   worry   about   a   reputation   or   their   self-imposed   honor   codes,   i   typically   result   to   a   more   brazen   and   outspoken   young   adult   who   really   doesn't   pull   punches   ⸺   this   is   kon   at   what   i   would   argue   is   their   most   genuine   and   who   i'd   also   argue   they   want   people   to   meet   first.   this   version   of   kon   swears   -   you   will   notice   it   the   most   when   i'm   writing,   as   i   believe   kon   only   ever   swears   when   they're   not   wearing   the   "s"   shield.   this   conner   is   more   unapologetic   ⸺   a   bit   more   melancholy   as   there's   no   cameras,   no   publicity,   and   nothing   but   themselves.   despite   also   having   lex   luthor   as   a   donor-father   figure,   he   does   not   lend   lex   luthor   the   same   "PR   grace"   that   he   would   lend   as   superboy.

superboy   /   kon-el.   though   this   was   kon's   first   and   only   persona   for   a   long   time   (until   about   their   death   in   my   canon),   this   is   no   longer   the   case.   through   years   of   trauma   and   experience,   superboy   has   become   more   polished   and   guarded   with   a   lot   of   what   he   does   and   says.   we   get   a   good   glimpse   of   how   he   percieves   his   past   through   hawk-girl   summer   and   my   own   portrayal,   but   superboy   is   a   symbol   that   kon   really   tries   to   mold   into   a   big   brother   that   younger   people   can   look   to,   whether   a   metahuman   or   not.   as   mentioned   in   the   "conner"   subsection,   superboy   does   not   swear.   he   does   not   try   to   at   all,   even   when   he's   solely   around   other   heroes   because   quite   frankly   he   swears   so   often   as   conner   it   would   be   incredibly   easy   to   slip   into   that   on   live   tv   and   call   a   supervillain   a   huge   fucking   dick,   and   then   he'd   be   right   back   at   square   one   in   hawai'i.   it   tends   to   slip   out   more   when   he's   around   other   superfam   members,   but   he   really   does   try   his   hardest.

usually   when   i   am   writing   these   two,   i   will   try   my   best   to   make   it   clear   by   using   "conner"   for   civilian   threads,   and   "kon"   or   "superboy"   for   cape-related   threads.   there   is   a   chance   i   will   also   be   using   kon   for   civilian   threads   as   i   do   believe   "conner"   and   "kon"   are   both   their   names   interchangeably,   but   i   will   try   to   refrain   unless   both   sides   of   kon   are   known.   i   really   do   like   having   the   “finding   out   x   is   a   hero”   written   out   in   threads   unless   it   has   been   already   established   in   comics   (re:   with   YJ   /   TT   /   most   of   the   batfam).

NOTE.   i   do   try   to   differentiate   between   the   two   in   an   obvious   way   because   i   do   have   trouble   reading   (adhd   and   dyslexia),   and   with   the   growth   and   amount   of   threads   i   now   have   on   this   blog,   i   will   guarantee   i   will   forget   unless   i   keep   up   to   this   process.   however,   if   clarification   is   needed,   just   dm   me.   i   could've   easily   fucked   up   too   lol.   also   i   probably   will   fuck   up   and   have   superboy   swear   when   i   say   he   doesn't   because   i   swear   really   bad   and   i   have   no   intentions   of   fixing   that   LOOOL

kon's   face   breaks   into   a   *wide   grin,   doubling   back   as   laughter   overtakes   it.   it   makes   them   laugh   and   *laugh,   though   they   know   it's   really   not   the   best   thing   to   be   doing   in   the   face   of   a   vigilante   who   wanted   every   single   excuse   out   there   to   hate   kon   for   everything   they   *were   and   everything   they   *would   be.

they   really   can't   help   it   ⸺   it   reminds   kon   of   themselves   at   an   age   where   they   thought   they   were   too   cool   for   everyone   and   the   golden   standard   of   heroism,   listening   to   none   and   making   their   own   path   for   themselves.   kon   snorts,   looking   up   at   red   hood   with   a   stubborn,   smug   set   to   his   jaw,   ❝does   it   make   you   feel   good,   hood?   talkin'   down   to   ignore   the   fact   that   you're   just   a   *sad   sack'a   shit?❞

kon's   chest   puffs   out   with   that   signature   *pride   that   follows   around   them,   lighting   up   a   room   before   kon   itself   ever   enters   through.   they   tilt   their   head   towards   the   extra   cup   of   coffee,   deciding   that   they   didn't   *really   need   a   second   cup   of   caffeine.   instead,   kon   offers   it   out   towards   daredevil   without   a   second   thought,   kicking   off   what   would   be   a   nonstop   stream   of   conversation,   ❝ i   mean,   you   really   think   a   guy   would   like   hurl   his   poor   body   through   a   crap-ton   of   concrete   and   *not   come   find   the   person   again?   it's   like,   the   start   of   a   whole   new   *friendship,   dude.   here.   coffee. ❞

it   was   rather   *unlucky   for   whoever   was   trying   to   break   in   to   the   building   that   kon   was   nearby   with   krypto,   floating   by   as   the   two   of   them   were   on   a   walk   through   the   sky.   it   really   doesn't   take   either   one   of   them   long   to   spot   scott,   the   two   of   them   stilling   to   a   halt   in   the   sky   as   he's   hunched   over   what   kon   obviously   assumes   is   a   lock   on   the   door,   before   breaking   the   silence   by   very   loudly   and   very   *obviously   slurping   on   the   empty   smoothie   they   clutched   in   their   free   hand.   ❝ lose   your   keys,   man? ❞

he must be existing in a maladaptive dream. a deep, ornate slumber he hoped to be caught in forever. he'd rather wait a lifetime for the air to escape his lungs, his body to drift in the space of heaven & hell than to wake   &   counter the bitter reality of his outcast truth. ──── cigarette smoke smelt sweeter here, wrapped around him in gentle ribbons. he nearly felt like a fool for ruining the environment with a scent so unkind. yet his belly was full of homemade sweets   &   lemonade, nervous system calmer than it ever was in the alley. he could feel mellow waves tickle the skin of his ankles, sweltering summer heat drenching exposed skin in sweat sticking to him like spiderwebs. his scars lit aflame. and perhaps, sincerely, he was here, alive.

( jason had a way of believing the worst but wanting the best. he felt as though something bad would happen to him when the world treated him with too much kindness all at one time. the other shoe would surely drop at any second the way it always has when he received too much of a good omen. god forbid he closed his eyes a minute too long, spent half a second taking in air, forgetting to be a present man in his surroundings. there was no telling when he'd father a new wound. or when the switch would finally flip   &   the other would take his solace   &   find comfort elsewhere, leaving jason alone on this aging, wooden dock, in the entrails of kansas, all by his familiar lonesome ).

the secluded countryside was a welcomed change from the sultry ambush of the city. he could get used to the cleaner air, the bugs nipping as his skin looking for fresh blood to feast on, the pulsing cadence of cicadas hidden in the trees, buzzing hymns against the hum of summer in the horizon   &   kon's breathing so close jason was afraid they'd realize he was listening so intently, remembering the patterns of his chest rising   &   falling, how often he breathed through his nose, or his mouth, or how often a laugh escapes him but it's more an outflow of air than anything else. it was a goddamn fairytale the way his pinky inched towards kon's without realizing, how his baby nail just grazed theirs until skin touched skin. for once, perhaps for the first time, he found someone who understood exactly what his loneliness felt like.

afternoon began to surrender to evening, they'd been watching the sun disappear going on an hour. truthfully, kon's question lingers, weighty   &   without a response. jason's ears tint, all confidence draining. what a pathetic reminder. who lives in his chest is not the same persona that exists under his usual leathers. his features speak before he does: lips turning upwards, his skin warming, voice unable to push past the pile up on his tongue like a car crash on a busy, rush hour highway. hazel eyes dances across their face, to his lips, into his eyes, past his cheeks. leaning in   &   closing the little distance between them was answer enough, their shoulders brushing until he found it in him to press chapstick covered lips to his.

kon   studies   jason   as   if   it   would   be   the   last   time.   it   is   the   same   way   they   *always   look   at   him,   the   jumps   of   blue   iris   across   the   expanse   of   jason's   face   as   they   take   in   the   little   things   with   the   *utmost   effort   ⸺   where   scars   end   and   where   they   are   the   most   concentrated,   the   flecks   of   brown   swallowed   by   a   green   unnatural   in   all   the   ways   that   mirror   kon's   own   *manufactured   cadmus   blue,   slight   pigmentation   variations   where   vitiligo   begins   and   ends.   kon   commits   it   to   memory   the   same   way   they   had   committed   their   first   glance   ‘pon   the   infinite   cityscape   that   had   become   their   home   of   metropolis;   wholly   and   without   *shame   ⸺   it’s   unmistakably   kon-el   in   every   way.   it   finds,   in   an   ever-fleeting   thought   in   a   brain   that   was   devoting   complete   power   elsewhere,   that   the   dappled   sunlight   'cross   jason's   face   rivals   the   first   glance   of   metropolis   as   their   favorite   thing   they'd   been   *allowed   to   witness.

the   offer   to   bring   jason   along   on   to   the   tradition   of   sundays   in   kansas   had   been   a   risky   one   ⸺   discussed   at   length   with   white-furred   dog   that   had   been   unhelpful   in   *every   aspect   ( and   who   was   kon   to   assume   krypto   of   all   beings   would   help?   he   was   a   dog,   after   all )   but   had   nevertheless   tagged   along   with   the   two   heroes   in   agreement   with   the   tradition.   kon's   just   *lucky   it   worked   out   ⸺   delight   had   found   its   home   in   every   corner   of   their   body   the   longer   the   two   were   there,   and   most   importantly   the   longer   jason   relaxed   and   actually   enjoyed   himself.

the   dock   had   been   kon's   own   treat   ⸺   though   the   kent   family   was   a   treat   in   of   *itself,   there   was   something   truly   *special   about   shedding   socks   and   shoes   and   bunching   pant   legs   up   to   dip   their   legs   in   water   that   had   long   since   heated   under   the   harsh   kansas   sunlight.   it   made   kon   nostalgic   for   that   brief   time   they'd   lived   back   here   ⸺   the   singular   summer   spent   in   smallville   at   the   age   of   sixteen   ( and   a   half! ),   learning   the   tried   and   *true   midwestern   activity   of   drinking   and   lounging   around   like   the   world   wasn't   *turning,   wasn't   moving   thousands   of   miles   per   second.   kon's   laugh   is   breathy   when   kryptonian   super   hearing   picks   up   a   change   in   his   breathing,   smiley   piercing   glimmering   with   sly   understanding   in   the   sunlight   as   their   smirk   turns   lazy   and   all   jason's.

kon's   question   is   without   thought   or   logic   behind   it   ⸺   in   all   honesty   it's   almost   *unsure,   as   if   waiting   for   someone   to   *spring   out   of   the   grass   with   a   camera   or   hearing   the   sharp   feedback   of   a   listening   device   piercing   their   eardrums.   it   reminds   itself   that   it's   jason,   that   there's   nothing   of   the   sort   even   on   his   *radar   and   kon   should   just   let   themselves   have   this   little   moment,   right   here   and   *now.   they   let   their   ttk   hold   themselves   up   as   both   hands,   warm   in   the   way   kryptonians   could   only   be,   hold   jason's   face   as   kon's   gloss-covered   lips   return   'gainst   his   own,   allowing   a   smile   into   it.
