Cynthia: I have a question...
Killian: i might have an answer
“I did just call you beautiful,” Cynthia had no shame about it, she believed that Killian was very beautiful, with his pretty green eyes and thick lashes, and how he had little moles and freckles scattered across his face and his shoulders. He was one of the most beautiful boys she ever met, and she knew if she let herself she’d fall for him quick, but Killian wasn’t in the market for relationships, and after all whatever he had with Pearl was alot stronger than whatever they had, and she’d accepted that. She giggled just a bit before rolling her eyes, her hand dropping to rest on his chest as she looked down at the bandages that covered up the burns on his body, finding herself wanting to cry again, but she held it back with a smile, “You wish Harvey, i’m just crying cause you smell so bad.”
“You’re beautiful,” he counters, and she was. Her small frame, her golden hair, her sad, emerald green eyes. He swore when he was higher than a kite two days ago that she had been an angel. The only reason he had talked himself out of her being one was because he knew that no angel would be coming to take him to heaven. Her small hand rested gentle against his chest, mindful of his bruised and burned state as she looked at his bandages. Her eyes grew brighter with tears, though they didn’t fall. He coos gently, rubbing her hand before smiling at her little jab. “I smell like bleach and disinfectant. You should break me out of here,” he murmurs, tugging her hand closer to his face, kissing the pads of her fingertips. “You’d take care of me.”
“At least there’s that. Not that not feeling anything sounds very amusing, but it’d be a lot worse if you felt all this.” This being all the burns her had. Leaning back in her chair, she gave him a smile. She was quite used to people asking her name, that’s what usually happened when you were new, right? “Carolina, but just Caro is fine.”
“It really would,” he agrees with a nod. He can’t imagine how much it would hurt if he didn’t have painkillers, even with the painkillers it hurt to move at times. “Carolina, nice name,” he hums, eyes closing slightly. He could feel the morphine wearing off slowly, so he pressed the small button they had given him for another dose before it could wear off completely. “So what made you think Atticus was a good idea?”
“Yeah,” Pearl let the word stain the air. She felt shady even talking about it. Images from the carousel still haunted her brain, wild laughter and the smell of smoke in the air, a carelessness in the way she’d straddled the prancing silver pony. Don’t open that door, Jesus. “So, on a scale of 1-10: how hard would it be to slip me some free morphine?” Her green eyes sparkled with the swift subject change. “Is it like an all you can eat buffet for pain killers? I’m so jealous.”
Killian was grateful for the subject change, a small laugh leaving his lips, though his face contorted in slight pain. His ribs would ache with the slightest movement above shallow breathing. “I’d have to take out the IV, and if I do that the machine is gonna go crazy,” he sighs, shaking his head. “I wish, so far it’s just morphine and then percocets once they take me off,” he explains, picking at the tape that held the IV in place on the inside of his forearm. “I’ll probably get some pretty great painkillers once I’m out, though. Those I could share,” he smiles.
“Well that explained a lot. “Yeah, I am. I don’t get all the jokes and insides yet, there’s too many.” Looking at him, she frowned slightly. It wouldn’t do good to move in such a state. “Try not to move I guess? It’ll just hurt more. But if you want something you can just ask me and I’ll fetch it for you.”
“Way too many,” he agrees, rubbing his eyes. “It’s fine, I just moved too fast. I really can’t feel much past the morphine,” he says, sighing some and relaxing against the bed all the same. It had been the most he’d really rested in weeks, how depressing. “Thanks, though, um....” He furrowed his brows, trying to remember if she’d told him her name or not. “What was your name?”
“Because seeing a sad animal trying with all his might to get his food is funny, I guess,” she shrugged as her legs pushed into the room. Unable to stifle a laugh, giggles flew from her tongue and into the air around her, the joke not going unnoticed. “How are you doing, star shine?”
Killian frowned, shaking his head. “It’s annoying,” he murmurs, looking over at the blonde. “Well I got roasted like a rotisserie chicken, so I’m doing great,” he says, no hint of malice in his words. “Where’ve you been? You disappeared on me for awhile.”
Cynthia’s smile faded a little as Killian continued to speak, pouting at his question. “You’re a survivor.” She muttered as she sat beside him, reaching over to stroke his cheek gently, “A beautiful and strong survivor, you should be happy.”
Killian nuzzled her palm, smiling softly. How Cynthia could remain so positive and light after the events of the past week was beyond him. “Did you just call me beautiful?” He teases softly, changing the subject. “Cynthia Carmichael are you being sweet on me?” He smiles brighter at her giggle, his hand coming up to her wrist, thumb stroking the inside of it gently. “Thank you, though. I should be.. I am. I am happy.”
Pearl shuffled forwards, her fingers skimming the hospital fabric. She nodded along to his words but her mind was elsewhere. You could almost see it in the watermelon hue of her eyes, the emptiness of it all. She slid her fingers inbetween his like he were an anchor to keep her sane. “It just complicates everything,” the words fell out so effortlessly, Pearl could have forgotten about the weight of them. Silently, she broke the gesture to tuck a flyaway strand of blonde behind her ear. It wasn’t the right time for a conversation like that. Would there ever be a right time? “So, have they caught the fucking pyro’ yet?”
Killian nodded sadly, fingers squeezing hers before she broke the contact. It did complicate everything, he supposed, or it made it easier. This was never meant to be anything more than a brief flirtation, but Killian was never good at that sort of thing. He always got attached, it was a habit his father had been trying to break since before he’d brought him into the business. He wanted to say so much, but it wasn’t the time or place for it, and she seemed to think the same. He shook his head at her question. “Not that I’ve heard. Who knows, it could’ve been someone that died in the fire. Not that we would be so lucky.”
“I’m sure she gives you the special treatment,” he replied with a smirk. “I don’t need to hear all the saucy things she does for you.” Levi laughed before eating another piece of chocolate. “How insolent,” he said, shaking his head. “We’ll have the lawyers come down immediately.”
“Oh yeah, super special. Might ask her to marry me once I’m out of here,” he says with a laugh, a groan closely following as the action hurt his ribs. “I’m sure you’d be able to get at least this wing of the hospital named after me. I want a settlement of two million, as well.”
“Shrek fan, obviously.” Pearl chewed at the inside of her lip, avoiding eye contact until she could finally bring herself to spit out the dreaded, “I’m–I’m really…” Her green gaze flitted to meet Killian’s just before she tore her attentions back to the ridiculously animated sloth on screen. “…–sorry.” Apologies always tasted so bitter. She couldn’t stand them. “I’m sorry for the craziness. That–… that was a fucking line from The O.C. Fuck.”
“You look like you’d be an All Star type of girl,” he jokes softly. When he heard her struggling for words, Killian looked over at her. Her green eyes seemed to look anywhere but at him, only catching his own for a few brief seconds before she tore them away. “Pearl,” he sighs, shaking his head slightly. “Come here please?” He simply wanted her closer to him, she felt too far away. “Look, you don’t... You had every reason to be upset, yeah? I didn’t want you to find out that way...” He didn’t want her to find out at all, actually. The last thing he had ever wanted was for her to look at him the way she had at the carnival. Like he was just another person on the long list of people that had hurt her. He had never wanted to hurt her.
Carolina knew barely no one, but she figured some could feel lonely if no one was visiting them. She just thought she could keep them company. That’s mostly how she found herself sitting on the chair in his room. “I hope the last scene of the last movie, he gets the acorn.” Seh said before tilting her head a little, a smile on her lips. “Who’s Wyatt’s cousin? Does he really look like a sloth?”
Killian looked up at the unfamiliar voice, brows furrowing slightly at the unknown face. “Wyatt’s the cousin. Zine joke, you must be new,” he murmurs, studying her features. “I could be cryptic and say get out while you can but,” he shrugs, the action pulling his bandages and charred skin, making him wince and make a pained noise. “Fuck I forgot I was roasted like a fucking kebab.”
“The family resemblance is uncanny,” he said, popping a blue M&M in his mouth. “You look like crap,“ Levi commented as he moved to sit by the bed. "I figured you’d need some sort of company other than crappy nurses.”
“Don’t shit talk Matilda okay. She may be old and gray but she’s a lovely woman,” he murmured, unaware that the nurse’s name wasn’t even close to Matilda. “The night nurse is a bitch though,” he murmurs, shaking his head. “Got all pissy at me for asking for a snack. I should sue.”
Standing in the doorway of Killian’s room, Mel rested her head against the door frame and crossed her arms over her chest while she listened to him ramble on about the Ice Age movies. She tried to hold in her laughter, but as soon as he made the comparison between Sid and Wyatt’s cousin, she busted out laughing and finally stepped into the room. “If we’re comparing people to the animals in the movie, you may as well admit that you look like the squirrel.”
“That’s rude and uncalled for,” he muttered, turning his head some to look at her and smiling slightly. “Meli,” he hums, patting his bed in front of the chair beside it, motioning for her to sit. “When did you get back? I’m assuming after the carnival.”
It wasn’t the first time Cynthia had come to seen Killian since he’d been committed to the hospital, but it was the first time he was… semi conscious and aware. Sure he was higher than a kite, and sure he was concerned for the poor squirrel in the movie, but at least he was forming actual sentences. “The squirrel is just a survivor like the rest of us, he’ll make until the end like he always does, he’ll be like the cockroaches, just surviving the whole meteor shower, just you watch.”
He groans, looking up at the too white ceiling and letting out a heavy sigh. “Surviving is so tiresome,” he mutters, looking over at Cindy. He studied her, eyes green as emeralds, hair golden like rays of sun. Even with her features marred by worry, she was beautiful. “That’s what we all are, here in this fucking school,” he laughs, shaking his head. “Fucking roaches. But those die when they get stepped on,” he hums, reaching for her hand absently. “What’s that make me?”
