okay I think I figured out the basic thing about sophie hannah that pisses me off: the solution to the mystery is always completely preposterous.

in agatha christie and dorothy sayers the crime is always something completely comprehensible (murder) and so are all the motives (pecuniary gain, fear of exposure, hubris) and the solution is surprising because the methods were clever or there was a really convincing misdirect but once it's explained you're like OHHHHH! well then SURE!

whereas in sophie hannah's murder mysteries everything is predicated on human beings performing the absolute most intricately and elaborately bonkers series of actions it is possible to conceive of a human person performing, because they are extremely wrong in the head. which is fine, it's stephen king's bread and butter, but don't then ACT like this is an agatha christie style mystery about normal murder that anybody could have figured out if they were only clever enough and followed all your stupid clues that don't make any sense. don't act like anyone could have figured this out or like it would have made any sense or been remotely satisfying if they had! none of what you are saying happened makes any more sense than before the explanation! literally what the fuck are you talking about! what do you mean that's the end of the book come back here and EXPLAIN YOURSELF

The thing about Ethan Hunt is that if someone were to call for help near him, with no context at all, he would drop everything and rush to help. No hesitation, no deliberation. He’d just run. Because that’s who he is. He’d throw himself into the fire for someone he’s literally never met before, not for duty or regret or obligation, but for love. He has faith in humanity.
