I was so incredibly lucky to see Toft’s Adoribull minibang take shape. This particular scene from chapter eight really arrested me from the start, and the final draft rendered it absolutely stunning. I couldn’t not illustrate it.

If you haven’t read it yet, please do yourself the favour and fix that. Inspired by both their canon story and the Ancillary Justice series, it’s forty-three thousand words of sci-fi adventure, the slow progression of trust, and exploring personhood and what makes it. Also guest-starring Dagna and Sera as truly delightful space smugglers.

I’d blame @chaoslindsay for this but to tell the truth: I absolutely did this to myself. And all of you. But @homsantoft most of all.

And so it’s Bull, carefully pulling the stitches from Dorian's mouth. The first time Dorian goes to his knees of his own volition, but thereafter Bull moves him into position. like this, Dorian submits, as in all things now. As he never could have been before, he's Bull's now. Like this, the Bull—Arvaraad—becomes possessive. His Saarebas. Dorian has submitted to him and by extension the Qun. The Bull understands this gift is precious, and that it would be wasted on anyone else. Even in the peace of the Qun, Dorian remains wary and slow to trust.

When did Dorian accept the Qun? In stages, perhaps. His allegiance shifting as he fell in love and learned the frame that kept the Bull whole and sturdy. Maybe Dorian fell in love with that, too. He never chose the Qun, in any case; he simply slotted into place within it the way he slotted into the Bull's arms.

And could Tevinter not be purified, under the Qun? The oppressed exalted to the necessary, precious for their duty and equal in esteem. Power taken from the ruling classes, replaced with security and serenity. The stench of blood rinsed or burned away.

Dorian knows, too, that there is love under the Qun, because love lies in both duty and submission. Bull is all the Qun to him, and through him Dorian loves the whole. He does not contemplate the dissonance of raising one up to embody the whole. Bull and the Qun have ever been the same to him.

Bull knows, of course, the flaws in Dorian's understanding. But the consequences are irrelevant. If Bull is no longer there to be the conduit, it won't matter, because Dorian will follow behind him in death as well as life.

They are both pretty rubbish Qunari. But Dorian lives in the illusion that this isn't the case, and the Bull is too rubbish a Qunari to break it. When Bull stitches Dorian's lips back together, he kisses them, because they are tender and Dorian craves the pain. The taste of him lingers in Dorian's mouth and throat, and Dorian is at peace.
