I felt a compelled to complete the previous idea’s illustration and maybe I went a little overboard and spent a bit too much time on detail when I should had been working on my primary project. A few years ago I thought about a comic about just every day life, I imagine it would look something like this. In any case, this was a great exercise on color and shading/lighting. I rarely work with color and I’m further reminded on how I should probably seek someone who knows color well. If you have red hair, definitely wear avocado green, something about that combination that I love. Who’s your favorite character?

Working through some serious artist block, I couldn’t just do nothing. Decided I’d sketch one of my favorite topics.

One of my best friend’s son reached out to me to teach him how to draw his DnD wood elf character in an anime style. Not really the best tutorial but it was certainly the right price. Also  reminder I’m a terrible speller and reminder why I got an F in penmanship back in 3rd grade.

More character development from an animated pitch last year. It’s interesting what people have mentioned about this particular character. People about my generation think about Samus from Metroid and people younger than me think about Ironman but actually the color scheme came from Evangelion Unit 02. A lot of people mention the head reminds them of A Bug’s Life, and rightly so because I based an animated insect head from that movie. Also most people assume this is a male character but it’s actually female. I tried best to depict this through her eye lids. Apparently I failed but then again, I’m not sure i can tell any insects’ gender.

Decided to take some time to get back to my graphic novel after taking a week off of it. I admit, it’s hard getting back into the swing of things, but thankfully I haven’t lost the general look and feel of the characters. I would kill to have an inker right about now.

Another character I designed last year for an animation pitch. Savvis is supposed to be something like a thief/con artist type of alien. The graphic novel version of this character is quite different and I’m still playing around with his design and personality. I was quite a fan of his sneakers and motorcycle style pants though. His jacket reminded me a bit of something from starwars.

Got back from an awesome cabin retreat with a gaggle of exceptional peeps in my life. After a few outdoor hikes and a night or two of partying we hit the visitor center and I saw a display of the kind of animals located in this particular park. I was captivated by the owl they had and decided to do some quick sketches of it. I figured I’d try to simplify it as best I could since I often find myself trying to add too much detail to my work. Feels good.

More quick comic book development for the evening. Decided this time to add dialog, although my actual handwriting is pretty terrible to be sure.

So maybe I should had been working on my graphic novel today. Maybe I got side tracked and needed to sketch an idea down, and maybe I got a little carried away sketching this idea down.

A late night sketch that I will probably pay for tomorrow over a cup of coffee. The struggle of learning to play an instrument is about as real as my fringe.

It’s rare that I’ll be seen around the people I work with on a weekend. Mostly so because I’ve never worked in along side with people I’d expose myself to, with the exception of where I am now. It makes me grateful for the time I spend with them. We never know when the lights are going to go out, so we should appreciate the little moments. Even when nothing in particular is happening, or even when no words are really being exchanged. I could never throw the word “family” around, but these coworkers are certainly people I’d be honored to call family. Much love and respect to each of you.

I was really feeling the music this evening while practicing the guitar in the dark. Decided I’d just draw a few influential musicians in my life. I’d be surprised if anyone could name these two musicians, more so because I don’t think they are particularly drawn well. But, please try to name these two if you dare.

Taking a break from my graphic novel work and doing a bit of study on fish tonight... although maybe my mind started drifting a bit in the process.
