An encounter with the Amish
Stranger: How do I gain the acceptance of my boyfriend's daughter? She's 17 and I'm 23.
You: You might have to explain this further
You: Are you trying to get her acceptance or do you want her to get yours?
You: Well, you probably have to give it time first of all
You: You must understand her from her perspective, that it's... unusual to say the least
Stranger: Itwill be 4 years next month.
You: Since she knew about you and her dad being together?
Stranger: Well, in my culture it is common, I see how it may be odd for her though
You: What culture are we speaking of? >.>
Stranger: Since we have been together
Stranger: I was Amish until 19 years old.
You: Well, the only way I can see you getting her acceptance is if you befriend her
You: Like become her friend, not mother
Stranger: She has no interest in befriending me
You: Which is very understandable
You: I'm not sure if there is a definitive way to get her acceptance, it's all in her hands
Stranger: In fact, she hates me
You: Yeah, but don't you understand why at the same time?
Stranger: She hates my culture.
You: But I doubt it has much to do with this
Stranger: It has everything to do with it
Stranger: sje tells me that it isnt about my age
You: Like, she hates you mostly because you've basically occupied her dad. And the age diffference (which I guess is quite big) is just not anything she agrees with
You: Well, this is a big factor that you have to explain then
Stranger: She is vegan feminist
You: But... how does that make her hate Amish?
Stranger: It means our beliefs are very very differemt
You: Hold on, you said you were Amish up until 19
You: Doesn't that mean you aren't anymore?
Stranger: I am excommunicated currently
Stranger: I can return or visit after marriage
You: Keep in mind I don't know too much about Amish and how this works exactly
You: But, doesn't this mean you've chosen to leave to try living "outside"
You: And that means you kind of have to live by the other "rules"? I'm not sure if any of this makes sense
You: That's probably what I'm thinkingof
You: I remember something about it in English class
Stranger: I participated in runspringa but returned home to be baptized into the church
Stranger: I was excommunicated for wrong doings
You: What about your boyfriend here? Like what does he believe in?
Stranger: He is an athiest so far
Stranger: However, he went to church with me on Thanksgiving when I asked him
Stranger: Slowly, he will believe
You: Well, I'm not sure how it's gonna work out with his daughter though
You: It probably just won't happen, because she simply believes in other things
You: Don't count on it at least
You: Like today people stand by what they believe in, whether it's in a religion or whatever
Stranger: That is disheartening
You: Nah, it's just how the world works today
Stranger: I can change her mind
You: Look, this is what you shouldn't do
You: Because you can't just change anyone's mind
You: You're no God-sent person to convert people into your own beliefs, I'm sorry but it's just how it works
Stranger: I;m not tryng to be rude
Stranger: I just want people to go to Heaven with me
Stranger: that I care about
You: I know, I'm sure you're a good person
You: But people will find their way to Heaven their own ways
You: Trust me, goodness is achieved in many ways and even his daughter will find her way to Heaven
You: Hope I didn't offend you or anything
Stranger has disconnected.
