gender has been severely shrunken down into the domain of language, and I think it's been a serious mistake to prioritize language over all other facets of what gender is and can be
women can have penises and men can have vaginas, and it's great that we understand that, but we've done little in the way of challenging what these body parts mean, what types of people they're attached to, what those people's personalities are like, how dangerous or not dangerous they are, how they think and behave
we may have a little more wiggle room to label ourselves and our bodies now, but in many other ways we are right back where we started, with "amab" and "afab" swapped in for "man" and "woman." saying "women can have penises too!" is really not very progressive at all if you still think her penis makes her dangerous, if you still think it determines her personality and behavior and thoughts
and i feel like this matter of labels has been unduly centered almost entirely on purpose. a lot of people want to just treat respecting trans identities as a language game, letting them agree with so many things as said verbatim without having to challenge anything they actually believe. there's no contradiction between steadfastly upholding that trans women are women and treating us like men if you just think we've redefined what a woman is to include people who are basically men. there's no contradiction between actively oppressing us and meeting mainstream standards of being an ally if you in fact have tried to redefine what a woman is to include imaginary men.
and, like, yeah, ultimately there's room for arbitrarily much nuance in how people find it resonant and useful to label themselves, but binary labels are still ultimately in reference to the conventional normative gender binary and how one's own experiences are thus gendered. generalities about the people thus labeled can be meaningful and descriptive without invalidating their place in any given person's identity, and can be evaluated for how accurately they actually reflect reality. erasing all such generalities really does no more than degender the labels. equivocating gender with degendered labels really does no more than move the goalposts back and degender the concept of gender as itself a label for an unavoidably real sociocultural phenomenon. degendering the language of gender is putting a friendly coat of paint on "gender critical" attitudes which hardly even rise to the level of ideology because they are no more than the enshrinement of all of the default assumptions that worm their way in when you degender people.
