#the dog on the left with the eyepatch – Strelka – had a litter of puppies when she got back to earth#the puppies’ father was another space training dog who helped out in the ground experiments#one of them was named pushinka#khrushchev gave her to jfk as a gift when he was visiting the states during the thaw in the early 60s#when pushinka was old enough to have babies of her own she had a star-crossed cold war affair with one of the kennedy family’s /other/ dogs#everyone was pretty delighted #(jfk called the resulting litter ‘pupniks’)#(it is one of my favorite little human stories of the era)
