“You don’t usually celebrate Halloween, do you?”

“No, not really. They tried to throw a Halloween party at school one year for something interesting but only a few people dressed up. I didn’t go, I was in the library. What do people usually wear as costumes?”

“It was pretty damn scary, huh?” Kota sighed, “I’m glad you’re safe though.”

“I can’t say the same about my phone though, Wes said I could try putting it in rice, do you think that would work?”

“On second thought you two would’ve butted heads a little, but there’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition, right?”

“Competition can be friendly?” Sujin joked before glancing over. “I’m sorry I never got the chance to meet him.”

wesleyskeeters:

“You say nobody really knows about your brother…” Wesley remarked softly, hoping this question wasn’t too forward, “So why did you choose me to tell? Isn’t somebody closer to you like Dakota a safer option?” he wondered. He couldn’t help the prying questions – it was the reporter in him. “I understand. We really don’t have to talk about it anymore. I’m just… honored you felt comfortable enough to tell me about him.”

“Do you celebrate Christmas usually? I know it’s become less of a religious holiday these days but I was wondering if you guys have some sort of Asian equivalent to it or something like that?” Wes smiled at her response, “And I’m looking forward to it too.”

Sujin thought about it, it was a good question. “Kota... She just... I don’t want to talk to her about bad things, I’ve never -” She bit her lip, not really wanting to admit it. “I’ve never really had actual friends before. At Mahoutokoro, we were all aiming for the same thing, and you may have noticed I tend to... get a little competitive so people kind of would get mad because I’d... I don’t know, because I cared about winning more than them I guess. And I guess I didn’t think it mattered, but I like Kota, she’s nice and fun and I don’t want to do anything to push her away so I’m trying really hard to... not do the thing I always do. Not that I do want to push you away, just... I don’t know, I think I trust you, I don’t really know why but... It just kind of felt like I could tell you and you wouldn’t spread it or act weird.” 

“Yeah we still have normal Christmas, the food’s different but we still have Santa and a good chunk of Korea is Christian, they still celebrate it in Japan but less than in Korea and it’s more of just a celebration, time to be with family because they’re not as religious, I know in some other countries don’t really celebrate it at all, and it’s more like a normal day, the one’s with more Muslims.” Sujin explained. “And we have all the same Christmas carols, I mean the tunes the same obviously the words are different because we sing them in Korean.”

He shook his head. “Why would I? Wouldn’t that just be as much of a waste of time as doing nothing? So I’d rather relax instead of kill myself over schoolwork and all that shit. I mean, I just got done with seven years of it. It’s not like my life is going to come to a grinding halt just because I take a little bit of time off.” Even though that’s exactly how it felt. “Exactly. Isn’t there a saying that it’s like the journey that counts or something?”

“I guess.” She said dubiously, “But isn’t it boring? What do you even do? Literally just sit around? Wouldn’t studying something be more interesting even if it wasn’t relevant to what you end up doing? You might get some transferable skills.” Sujin didn’t think he would but honestly she was feeling stressed on his behalf now. “I guess? English sayings aren’t really my area of expertise, not that I don’t know a lot, I do, just not that one.”

“I’m just glad you’re okay,” Dakota smiled honestly. “The storm didn’t rattle you up too much, did it?”

“Yeah, it wasn’t too bad.” Sujin said with a shrug. “I mean, I feel a lot better now that it’s over and magic is back.”

“Any thoughts on what you’re going to be for Halloween? Because honestly, I’m stumped.”

“Can I just wear my traditional Korean clothes and call that a costume?”

The story sparked tears in Wesley’s eyes. Although he blinked them away, they still threatened to come back. It really was a beautiful story. He was deflated he had gone this long without knowing about it. Mentally, he noted to himself to tell Laurel that story the next time she was scared. It was the perfect tale to bring a smile to her face. Wesley opened his mouth to make a comment about it, before suddenly Sujin spoke up about her brother. “Sujin, I–” he sighed, a single tear fell, “I’m so sorry. That’s terrible I had– I had no idea.”

“Definitely. No Christmas presents? Well then this will be the best and first official Christmas you’ll ever have. Be careful, or you might just drown in presents,” Wes smiled softly, his stomach grumbling softly as Sujin went on about the food, “Sounds delicious. I can’t wait to try it.”

Sujin nodded. “Thanks. I don’t - no one really knows I had a brother here, I thought it would be easier if I just stopped telling people about him... Plus I’m not really...” She paused, the words supposed to talk about it could bring up questions so she rerouted her answer.  “I don’t like to talk about it.” Which was also true, she’d never had people she felt like she could talk about it with. Her mother refused to talk about any of the past because she was scared. And her step-father only knew the bits and pieces of the story they were allowed to share. 

“Not at school, my Mum and step-dad would send something but that’s about it.” She clarified, not wanting him to think she had literally no one. She smiled, “I’ll look forward to it, you should too. I’ll get you the best present you’ve ever had.”

“You’ve been a lot more helpful to me than you may realize. Empathy doesn’t come naturally to everybody, but that doesn’t make you a bad person. You’re kind of like my brother in that sense actually… I think he would’ve liked you.”

Sujin gave a soft smile, honestly she thought Lorcan was kind of like what Minsoo might have grown up to be like. “Well, I probably would have liked him too, well, as long as he let me win.”

Connor bit on his lower lip, shrugging at her questions. Of course he was worried. Worried he wouldn’t have one since he couldn’t figure it out. He’d just never had that eureka! moment where you decide what you want to do with your life and now, months after graduating, he wondered if he ever would. But instead of voicing all of that to someone, he kept it shoved down. Buried underneath a mask of confidence and nonchalance. “Nah, I’m still young. I got my whole life to go somewhere. Why stress it now?”

Sujin frowned, “Stress is pretty much my middle name, so I’ll stress it now and stress it later, I’ll just stress always.” She closed her textbook all the same. Feeling infinitely relieved as she did. “So, you’re just going to do nothing? And hope something pops up? Not even try and study something, or do something in the mean time until you figure out where you’re headed?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. “I mean, it sounds...” She trailed off, deciding there wasn’t an appropriate ending. “I guess as long as you end up somewhere in the end it doesn’t matter how you got there?”

“I don’t believe that. You’ve been doing a great job so far.”

“I guess it’s easier in this case because I know how I was feeling and can assume you’re feeling as bad if not more. I don’t usually notice what other people are feeling.”

Wesley nodded slowly, “I see.” He wasn’t going to press her on the subject. It was obvious she wasn’t really up for talking about it. His mouth opened briefly at the mention of ‘brother’, about to state that he had never known she had one. But she stumbled over the explanation a bit and he decided to move past it. Perhaps the storm was making her stutter. “The sun and the moon? I don’t think I’ve ever heard that story, but it sounds beautiful. I’d love to hear it sometime. Sounds like something my sister would enjoy.”

“A massive drug ring? Me? You’re hilarious,” Wesley chuckled, shaking his head a little. It was pretty obvious he was one of the ‘cleanest’ guys around. He made sure of that, with a name like ‘Skeeter’ hanging over his back. “Don’t get yourself one just yet – now I know what to get you for Christmas,” he grinned, the grin subsided as she put the currently-useless phone aside. “Bibimbap?” Wes echoed poorly, “What’s that?”

Sujin nodded, translating it in her head, “It’s got a beautiful ending, well, I always thought so because when they climb into the sky the sister is afraid because she does not want to be alone in the dark and the brother says he will shine the whole night so that she will never be alone. And so he became the moon shining in the night and she became the sun warming up the days. My brother would always ruin it after that by teasing me that girls were always scared.” She said with a soft smile, dwelling on that for a few seconds before wincing as another crack of thunder boomed outside. Maybe it was the storm making her vulnerable, maybe it was the lack of magic which meant none of her usual coping mechanisms were available to her or maybe it was just that she hadn’t talked about it for so long and then mentioning him to Lysander earlier had opened the flood gates. “He died.” She admitted softly, “While we were stuck in the storm.”

“You could be the type, all charming and innocent but then behind closed doors secretly an evil genius.” She joked. She smiled, “So, I can expect a Christmas present then? No one at my old school ever got me Christmas presents.” She chuckled at his pronunciation. “It’s a rice dish, mixed with meat, vegetables, some sauces and egg, you can mix in lots of different stuff, it’s kind of like leftovers. It’s just the best comfort food. I’ll make some for you.”

Odette gave her a look. “Damn. I’m all about being the top of the class and the best, but that’s… The whole school? Doesn’t sound easy. Your social skills are impressive, I have to say. I mean, that’s next level insane. If I ever start to go that crazy, I hope my friends like me enough to stick around and pull me back to reality.” She nodded, “I respect that. Keep it to yourself. You don’t owe it to any of them to share that idea.”

“I have friends too.” Sujin said dryly, the fact that she’d only made them in the UK because she hadn’t had a chance to drive them all away with her competitiveness didn’t need to be mentioned. “I just don’t feel the need to rub them in people’s faces to make myself feel better. I guess it’s a self esteem thing.” She commented, before nodding. “Exactly, if they’re smart enough, they’ll figure it out on their own.”

“Uh, thanks?” Kian replied, uncertain if that was an appropriate response to what she’d said. He decided to just go with it and walked inside. “Wow, okay. What makes you think I’m gonna touch somethin’?” He glanced around and noticed some already folded papers and immediately reached out to pick one up. Looking at it, he realized what he was doing and glanced at Sujin. “Right. I dunno why I do that,” he said, setting it down carefully. “I’m just, uh, I’m gonna sit over there.” As he spoke, he started inching towards the opposite side of the room.

“Because I know your type.” She replied dryly, rolling her eyes as she checked the one he’d touched to make sure he hadn’t ruined it. Sujin tried to hold back her glare as she gathered up the rest of the pieces and sat, she wondered if she could get away with just ignoring him but she also knew Kota wouldn’t like it if she walked in and she was actually trying to keep this friendship together. She sighed and glanced over at him. “So, uh, how are you? How’s quidditch? You’re on the Bats, right?” She asked, there were a lot of teams but she was pretty sure that was the one Kota talked about.

He made a face at her explanation, although he really wasn’t that surprised. The last conversation that he’d had with the girl she was bragging about how well she had done in her old school, after all. Thinking about that reminded him of the robes that she’d mentioned, he still thought they were a sort of brilliant idea. “Don’t you get tired of schoolwork? Ever?” He asked, his brow furrowing. He shrugged at her question, dropping his chin to rest on his hands. “I had nothing better to do so I figured why not wander around?”

Sujin glanced down at her text book where there were still scuff marks from when she’d thrown it out the window of her dorm less than 48 hours ago, “Uh, not really? I mean, everyone needs breaks but I usually just push through.” She thought she sounded convincing. She stared at him for a second. “How do you do that? Just like, not stress out, and do literally nothing. Aren’t you worried about the future? Aren’t you worried if you stop now you might never start and then you’ll just be stuck in the same place for the rest of your life?”

“Kota’s not here, she should be back soon. I guess you can wait inside.” Sujin said, holding the door open. “But don’t touch anything, I’m folding origami and it’s delicate.”

For once in his life, Connor was actually annoyed that his mother had canceled classes. How was he supposed to occupy himself if he couldn’t sit in on random classes? He’d already gone through all the television shows he’d wanted to watch online and all of the movies were so old he was pretty sure his mom didn’t even know what they were. Still, despite the lack of classes, he wandered through campus, finding himself in the library. He hadn’t expected to run into someone he knew, although he should have considering how many of his schoolmates ended up enrolling. Connor approached her table, turning the chair backward before sitting down, his arms crossed over the top of his seat. “I thought classes were canceled? Why are you in here?”

Sujin frowned down at the paper, honestly, she’d been here a long time and she was starting to see double. Which wasn’t helping because she was already a little confused about the English being used. She had downloaded a translation app but it felt too much like cheating so she hadn’t gotten around to using it yet. She glanced up when she heard a voice, taking a second for her eyes to focus on Connor. “Oh, hi, yeah, they were but that means everybody takes a week off and that’s the perfect chance for me to get ahead and cement my place as top of the class. And make sure I’ve got a handle on next weeks assignments.” She explained, blinking a few times before glancing back up, “Wait, you don’t even go here. Why are you here?”
