I need an AU where Shane and Ilya end up training together one summer, before Irina's dead, and Ilya comes over with a Russian group of players.

It would be normal for Ilya to stick with the Russian players, to keep speaking Russian and only train against the other players.

Except Ilya loves playing against Shane, and Shane's obviously been cast out to the fringes by the English and French speaking players. So Ilya pulls Shane to the Russian group.

Right to the centre of it, bc Ilya's got the same charming pull to him even as a child.

And when the other Russian players say that Shane's too weird to keep hanging out with them Ilya says "fine" and leaves with Shane.

And Yuna who's heard so often from her son's teachers that he's always been on the fringes, who's heard from Shane that he "doesn't really have any friends at school", who knows his hockey teammates still think he's weird but at least he's good and funny, gets to witness her son get chosen by someone who was pushed to choose. Even if Ilya's struggling to communicate with her and with Shane, he doesn't go back to his Russian friends.

He doesn't go the "easy" route.

I just think Ilya choosing Shane when all the other kids around them can sense the different-ness of Shane's autistic ways would be so good.

Especially when paired with them being penpals but the letters stop for a couple months and Yuna has to prepare herself to talk to Shane about how Ilya's left him too.

Shane who finds a hockey training thing in Russia for the summer, applies and is ofc accepted, and when he shows up with Yuna in tow ofc Ilya is there and he looks so so so sad.

And then Shane calls his name and Ilya looks at him with disbelief. And Shane asks if he's okay and Ilya, who's never actually lied to Shane before, tells him that Irina's dead.

Yuna watching her son hold his best friend together and telling Ilya that she's gonna look out for him now.

If we wanted to engage in nuance (lol, lmao) on the "are audiobooks reading" debate, we really do need to bring literacy, and especially blind literacy, into the conversation.

Because, yes, listening to a story and reading a story use mostly the same parts of the brain. Yes, listening to the audiobook counts as "having read" a book. Yes, oral storytelling has a long, glorious tradition and many cultures maintained their histories through oral history or oral + art history, having never developed a true written language, and their oral stories and histories are just as valid and rich as written literature.

We still can't call listening in the absence of reading "literacy."

The term literacy needs to stay restricted to the written word, to the ability to access and engage with written texts, because we need to be able to talk about illiteracy. We need to be able to identify when a society is failing to teach children to read, and if we start saying that listening to stories is literacy, we lose the ability to describe those systemic failures.

Blind folks have been knee-deep in this debate for a long time. Schools struggle to provide resources to teach students Braille and enforcing the teaching of Braille to low-vision and blind children is a constant uphill battle. A school tried to argue that one girl didn't need to learn Braille because she could read 96-point font. Go check what that is. The new prevalence of audiobooks and TTS is a huge threat to Braille literacy because it provides institutions with another excuse to not provide Braille education or Braille texts.

That matters. Braille-literate blind and low-vision people have a 90% employment rate. For those who don't know Braille, it's 30%. Braille literacy is linked to higher academic success in all fields.

Moving outside the world of Braille, literacy of any kind matters. Being able to read text has a massive impact on a person's ability to access information, education, and employment. Being able to talk about the inability to read text matters, because that's how we're able to hold systems accountable.

So, yes, audiobooks should count as reading. But, no, they should not count as literacy.

Honestly imagining the scene before Shane and Ilya show up at his parents’ cottage from Yuna’s perspective is fucking hilarious

Your husband goes over to your son’s cottage where said son doing some “silent yoga retreat” because your husband left his charger there. He comes home much faster than anticipated, looking completely shell shocked, and you haven’t managed to get an explanation out of him.

Then your son shows up looking somehow even more distraught than your husband and starts rambling about “not wanting you to find out this way” and you’re trying to figure out what the fuck you’re supposed to have found out

And then your son’s career-long rival comes into view, standing in your entryway like a kid in the principal’s office and you’re now 10 times more confused

And THEN your son comes out to you (good for him, you’d been wondering for awhile) but that statement is immediately followed by his, again, CAREER-LONG RIVAL declaring that they’re LOVERS. And it turns out the career long “rivalry” has really been- you actually don’t want to think about it too hard, honestly.

Yuna is a stronger woman than I am, there would’ve been a whole bottle of wine on that table just for me if I was in her shoes
