“I ain’t stuck. I can get down whenever I wanna.” Assuming, of course, Hiyori was nowhere in the immediate vicinity. Nor his lieutenant. It wasn’t as though either of them were physically incapable of dragging his ass back down, sure, but having the higher ground ( literally ) gave him an advantage for sure. He wasn’t sure what it was, but he had it.

Hiyori was… getting better (?). At the very least, she was willing to listen to him instead of chew his brains out and hang up like she had been doing the past few phone calls. If only she could somehow go into the phone and smack him through it with her sandal.

“Whose being a brat?! Say that to my face ya dumbass! If ya wanted nice then go call Hachi, dipshit!” She squawked indignantly, but was still not in her usual amount of rage.

She squatted on the floor of the warehouse, frowning loudly (somehow Hiyori could do this) and felt herself slipping back into this weird routine of insulting him and trying to be friendly at the same time.

“But not thinking is your fucking speciality so there’s no surprise there, baldy!”

By the Soul King, it would be so easy to fall back into the routine of snapping back and forth, each in increasing levels of volume before one gave up or hung up, but right now? He didn’t feel much like it. It had taken such a monumental amount of effort just to get her to pick up the damn phone today, and call him a sap, but he was feeling somewhat sentimental.

“Yeah, s’ppose it is sometimes, huh.” Through the window of his office he could see out across his division’s courtyard, watching with vague disinterest as his officers went about their daily business. Somehow, the outside world beyond the confines of the fifth’s barracks felt further than the world of the living, as though the connection his phone had made with Hiyori’s were somehow tying him to her in ways he couldn’t describe even if he were to try.

Kensei just scoffs without saying much of anything in response. But instead a hint of a grin curling one side of his lips, he was more than used to Shinji’s ways and he knew it worked vice versa as well.

’ comfortably buzzed sounds more my speed. ’ he remarks nonchalantly, his responsible nature taking over even if this whole drinking thing was his idea.

“Ya prude.” He’d expected as much, though. When it came to drinking Shinji ( quite proudly ) held the record among them for the most alcohol imbibed in one session, and Kensei had always been more on the conservative side of things. If Kensei only wanted to have a drink or two to unwind, then that was fine; he’d go find Rose or Lisa later to keep the sad little party going.

“But okay, okay, where d’ya wanna go fer yer one appletini, Sister Prudence?”
