melfrank running an emergency room in a fantasy castle!!
frank is the court physician, hanging onto his position by his fingernails after losing the crown's trust due to an unfortunate magic addiction last summer (he had to spend ten months with the druids chanting in latin and drinking grass potions)
mel is a young student from a neighboring kingdom who is sent to the castle as part of the new princess's retinue, in a bunch of pomp and circumstance surrounding the crown prince's arranged marriage and at first everyone in the infirmary thinks she's a plant until it becomes obvious that no, she really is so excited to be here
frank is known as somewhat of a stoic teacher but with mel he instantly softens to the amazement of his other protegees, all of whom thought he was physically incapable of laughter at this point
still there are inconsistencies in mel's story, she mixes up little details, she's a little too skilled at certain healing spells to be at the level she's supposed to be at, it becomes rather obvious to everyone that she's lying about something, though frank is reluctant to even consider the possibility and also she's so genuinely kind and invested in their patients that no one thinks she means any harm
eventually mel is spotted in a tense conversation with one of the new princess's guards and the theory - mostly alchemist-specialist lady yolanda garcia of blackthorn's theory but whatever - is that she's running from either family or a husband she wanted to escape from, living under an assumed name, and maybe someone in the princess's household has recognized her and so everyone gets really protective (mel is gently confused)
then - oh no! - wyvern attack! frank and his infirmary are overwhelmed with injured soldiers to the point where they're putting people into stasis spells so they can save their lives later, and then just as the battle reaches its height and they hear from the royal guards that the king is beginning to consider evacuation, mel gets a weird look on her face and marches straight out of the room
frank doesn't have time to follow her because he's elbow-deep in the chest cavity of the king's beloved cousin trying to keep his heart from turning to stone - he's already lost one leg and that foot got stomped on by some asshole in the courtyard so he's already gonna be on the shit list for that - but he really wants to, so as a compromise he sends his best sorcery student after her, a mousy little kid named emma with a natural talent for turning invisible
no time to think about that now, what with all the slowly turning to stone people in his hospital, but hours later the battle abruptly stops, and the people taking shelter in the castle stop screaming, and the guards slowly start waking up, even the ones more stone than flesh which is rather notable because the only thing that can reverse a wyvern's direct gaze is -
oh shit, mel's a druid! - alchemist-specialist lady yolanda garcia of blackthorn, yelling at the top of her lungs from the other side of the room
mel doesn't come back for days and days and days after this even though frank keeps asking with increasing desperation, trying to keep his people from running their mouths because technically speaking druids are banned from the king's land until the sun and moon meet in the sky on the third week of the harvest month (old treaty) and he doesn't know what she's doing here exactly but if she's here to spy at this point he doesn't care that much, because she probably has good intentions, but then
emma returns with the princess herself, her excellent royal highness lady of the dawn fairhaired and goldhearted rebecca of the august forest, and blithely asks to talk to "mel's boyfriend"
"oh is it not official yet?" asks her excellent royal highness lady of the dawn fairhaired and goldhearted rebecca of the august forest
is everyone a druid, everyone is thinking now (yes, at least as far as the princess's retinue is concerned)
