call me richard papen the way i tackle existential dread whilst in the club
didn’t hear a single word he said this whole interview god bless
Behold! The official ‘The Secret History’ playlist:
AKA: The unofficial TSH playlist I made on my most recent reread of this book. All songs on here were either mentioned by name, referenced by lyrics, or the artist was mentioned and I chose one of their more popular songs and stuck it on here! <3
I've switched this playlist up a bit in multiple ways to make it a bit more accurate and to fit my tastes better for the songs on there from moments where only the name of the artist was mentioned, also, I've added 'Loads Of Love' and I think this song is so funny given the context—for forever I couldn't find the song Bunny mentioned to Richard at their dinner, now I think I have. He says this:
I don't think it was Ethel Merman who sung it, as the only song I found that fit this description enough was 'Loads Of Love':
The part that I find funny is that the lyrics include this, when Bunny's the one who mentions it:
Right haha
too weird for normal kids too normal for weird kids Just right for being alone and miserable my entire life
i’ve never had to be the mediator for a night out debrief next morning omg the amount of phone calls i’ve made today is insane
i love relating every inch of my life to the secret history.
i woke up this morning and felt like death after the night out and the first thing i think of is the scene where richard goes to thirsty thursday and is woken up by both sophie and francis.
i absolutely adore this dynamic so much, every sophie scene is like a breath of fresh air especially in the final chapter of the novel.
AND richard and sophie somehow stay friends even after breaking up, i love them 😭🙏
I like that it’s clear Bunny’s ability hone in on how best to hurt someone also works for the inverse and means he has a knack for knowing how to make people feel better :)

I should quit my job to pursue a life of meaningless violence
Keep salting the wound I'm close
marion barnbridge your boyfriend looks like he sits criss cross apple sauce to jerk off
i see richard papen everywhere (a random girl brought me into the bathroom stall at a club with her so the security guard wouldn’t catch her doing coke, i’ve been thinking about her all week).
John
richard’s name not being mentioned at all in bunny’s letter to julian is such a gut punch detail.
the betrayal bunny must’ve felt seeing richard at the ravine with the rest of the group would’ve been heart wrenching considering he went to him for help and excluded him from the letter completely ohhh my gosh.
one of my favourite parts of the book ofc include richard’s winter but especially the final chapter because we get to see richard and francis’ dynamic on full display. it always felt to me very “scooby doo” whenever they tried to work together to try and pull the group back into functionality.
i haven’t taken any photos of their antics with charle’s feral cat but that too comes under the realm of ‘francis and richard desperately trying to fix things together’ parts of the book.
i find that out of all of the friendships in the class, they balance each other out really well, in a messy ‘bipolar’ way so to speak.
i cant believe i never posted this one here
i just realised ive never talked about my love for dracula like that’s got to be my favourite classic book of all time.
i’ve re-read it too many times now and i hope to do so again, it’s so delicious.
