LEAKED CLIP OF CULLEN SINGING IN DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION!
Cullen/Templars opinions on mages are kind of like men’s opinions on abortion. It shouldn’t matter yet they are the ones who make decisions.
small difference between telling a woman what she can’t do with her own body which cannot in any way harm other people, and a mage that’s able to kill six people with a flick of their wrist, don’t you think?
'Templars are like pro-birth men.'
I guess I missed the part where women who have abortions suddenly have the power to shoot lightning from their fingers and rain fire from the skies and cause earthquakes and reanimate the dead and mind control people and turn into murderous rage demons and all that other fun stuff.
No wonder a lot of men are scared as shit of women having that kind of power…
There is a difference between "Cullen is fucking garbage shit faced asshole he should just die" and "I dislike Cullen's character because I feel his statements about mages are ignorant, and make me uncomfortable."
I'm just saying
I thought about the fact that someone had to animate the butts in Dragon Age: Inquisition and I can't stop giggling.
Cullen/Templars opinions on mages are kind of like men’s opinions on abortion. It shouldn’t matter yet they are the ones who make decisions.
First of all, those two things are not even comparable. The ability to have fire,…
Well, I mean funny you mention ‘mentally ill’ people and ‘doctors’ because I’m one of those fans who honestly believe mages are canonically mentally disabled. I’ve talked about how unbalanced the comparison is, but I do believe there are clear parallels between magic and mental illnesses. Yes, claiming there’s a connection makes me, a mentally disabled person, rather uncomfortable, but a connection exists and I cannot ignore it, especially when it comes to people claiming that mages need regulation.
And it’s a pretty widely accepted opinion that this Circle system should be improved because it’s obviously not doing its purpose the way it is now, but to me, as someone who emphasizes with the idea that I should be locked away or restrained because I make other people feel unsafe is … it’s gross. At least keep that in mind, even when you’re talking about a fictional fantasy video game.
Also Fenris does indeed say “a lot of mages would enjoy Tevinter’s freedom, and completely forget that few ever achieve the power to enjoy them.” He’s talking about a fraternity group that wants to break from the Chantry and the Templars, and he’s basically saying that Tevinter is manipulating that because there’s oppression amongst the mages of Tevinter, and he uses the word FEW.
The issue of controlling the “dangers of magic” doesn’t end with “templars or no templars???” There could be homeland security teams of mages trained to battle mage outlaws. There could be mage surgeons that serve as demon exorcists so mages who become possessed by demons get a second chance. There could be mage scientists and engineers that make prosthetics that aid mages who need help controlling their powers and their body. There’s many ways this issue can go.
Overall, the templars and the chantry failed at their job, and a lot of them aren’t willing to change like Cullen does. I personally don’t see the need to defend the templars, even if you believe mages are ‘dangerous’, because the templar organization messed up bad in the first place.
I don’t disagree with you, at least not completely, my entire point is that using abortion as a comparison when it doesn’t compare is wrong first of all. And second of all, they don’t need to be in the tag spewing hate. Yes, my fear with coming out with my mental illness and getting help was the terrifying notion that I would be locked up simply because of something I couldn’t help, something that even scared me. So I do sympathize with the mages but mages are still more extreme than their real life counterpart. The Circle and Templars are comparable to Mental Hospitals and Staff there who are there to help, but you often hear about them abusing and mistreating their patients. But this does not mean that this things suddenly become uneeded because of corruption. This means we need to find a way to police the corruption, which would be the Seekers of the Templar order (Sadly, their organization is small. And Cassandra can’t be everywhere are once). There would still need to be an order to police, the mages policing the other mages. You would still need someone who doesn’t suffer from the temptations of demons to watch over and police the group, it doesn’t just work like that and it’s not that simple. The problem with the Dragon Age universe is that everyone wants to pretend it black and white, but its the same as this world. Its not black and white. The point is, in some way, Templars will always bee needed. Mental health patients need therapy, and sometimes medication to help them through their illness. Its not different than mages. Not all mages need the same level of education and supervision as others. Which is why the system needs to be improved to find a way to cater to the needs of each individual mage and keep everyone safe. Some mages can choose to live in the circle if they feel more safe there (comparable to mental health patients who prefer to stay in a facility, I have thought about it a couple times myself), and some can go off and live their life.
But fenrispenris, why does the OP’s post count as ‘in the tag spewing hate’ in the first place? I’m honestly trying to get an answer here; sure, you may disagree with the comparison of abortion rights vs “mage rights”, but overall it wasn’t an ableist, victim-shaming, misogynistic opinion, and there wasn’t any reason for the vitriol.
I added on my own thoughts on the comparison, and I said that while it wasn’t a fair allegory, there’s a grain of truth to that single-sentence post. And like many single-sentence posts, there’s only so much information you can address. While the OP didn’t elaborate, I certainly did (in my typical, tl;dr wall of text fandom wank manifestos) and your response to me was perfectly articulated - you remained true to your own beliefs while not putting down mine.
You said yourself that this mage/templar/ableism/inherent power issue in both the DA universe and in meta is not a black-and-white situation, which means that fans will be tagging their opinions that won’t perfectly align with yours. Why aren’t you tolerant of that? What is there to criticize about tagging your thoughts about the templar organization and how they treat the mentally disabled?
I’m bringing this up because the more I get into the DA fandom, especially the Cullen fan corner in particular, i’m seeing more and more people become increasingly militant about what is acceptable writing and what isn’t. That isn’t the community I want to be a part of. I don’t see the OP’s post as ‘hate’, and I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be tagging it so people can see their thoughts on the subject.
And yes, there’s only so much I believe fans can tolerate - pro-templar arguments often rest on the sliding scale of ‘mages are dangerous but yeah’ all the way down to ‘they’re crazy and ps*cho and need to be locked up for their own good’. Did you think the OP’s post was somewhat on the bigoted end of the ‘opinion scale’? What was there to call ‘hate’ in that sentence?
The DA fandom is getting more and more riled, possibly because Inquisition is getting closer to release, but I’d like for the heat to turn down a notch.
When I just watched her tag a post before that as "Fuck Cullen" and then in her tags on this post talk about how Cullen is shit and garbage, it's hate spew. Then theres the fact that she also tagged it "fight me" and then when she got no response, REBLOGGED it. She wanted a fight, she wanted to cause drama, and now shes complaining about Cullenites acting like five year olds after literally provoking them. She knew what she was doing by putting that into the tag. I am glad to discuss Dragon Age, and it's characters and differences of opinion, as we just did in speaking about mental illness and I enjoyed the discussion between you and I very much but I literally just watched her try and pick a fight with every cullenite because I was following her at the time. She didn't want a debate, her intent was to attack. I can handle critiques of my favorite characters because they're not perfect, Cullen is for sure not. I know he's not, as I have said, I know his faults and while I don't agree with him on a lot of things, I accept them. And excuse me, but even BEFORE DA:I Cullenites have gotten nothing but shit and abuse from everyone else in the fandom and it's increased even more which I didn't think was possible. So I am so sorry, that we're not the cheeriest fucking part of the fandom right now when we have people coming into our asks CONSTANTLY and our tags to tell us that Cullen is shit, and garbage and a terrible person. Or that we constantly have to defend the fact that we like Cullen for more than his looks to "SJW" and "feminists" who accuse of us of being nothing more than drooling fan girls and just wanting to ride his dick. We're not asking you to like our favorite character, we're just asking that you keep the tags free of hate, just accept that WE like him and lets us enjoy Cullen. If you have an honest to god question, and want to have a discussion we are happy to comply. But I'll be damned, if you're just gonna come into the tag to provoke people, especially with a statement that isn't even correct and doesn't even make sense. And don't sit here and tell me that she was "only expressing her opinion", I sat here and watched it on my dash.
But seriously? Cullenites get nothing but shit from the rest of the fandom, so sorry for not being OH SO THRILLED when some rude little turnip wants to spew hate in the tag.
Guys, stop sending anon hate to dwarvenqueen. Even though her opinion was terrible, and she posted it in the tags, then reblogged it clearly looking for a fight, sending anon hate just makes you look just as bad.

When people are starting drama in the fandom and you just want to
Cullen/Templars opinions on mages are kind of like men’s opinions on abortion. It shouldn’t matter yet they are the ones who make decisions.
First of all, those two things are not even comparable. The ability to have fire, ice, and all kinds of magical spells at your finger tips as well as summon demons from a dream world into your body and turn into an abomination that can harm hundreds, if not thousands of people is not the same as getting a medical procedure done, I’m sorry.
Second, we’ve seen what happens when mages are put in charge of themselves. It typically ends with blood magic and owning slaves. Third, the templars are in place to keep the peace. Thats not to say that they haven’t taken advantage of their power and used it to abuse mages. But their role is to protect people from mages, as well as protect the mages. That is their official role. Fourth, Let me begin by saying that you’re not wrong, Cullen’s actions have not always been the greatest, and what you fail to recognize that this is a thing that most Cullenites recognize this, and we accept Cullen’s faults. We don’t need you to point it out. What you also fail to realize, while his actions cannot be excused, there is a direct cause here that has effected his behavior against mages. It starts in the Circle of Fereldan, where a young Templar opposes mage treatment but finds himself in a position unable to do anything about it, so for not he’s a man just trying to do his job,. Thats when mages he worked with, was acquaintances with, chated with and was maybe even friends with turned out to be blood mages and over took the tower. They take he and other templars captive and mentally, physically and emotionally torture them. And one by one he watches his fellow templars fall until he is the only one left. Who knows how long it is before the Warden arrives and saves the circle? This experience leaves Cullen tramuatized. If he couldn’t trust the mages of Fereldan, people he knew, people he sympathized for, people he trusted, then who could he trust? Cullen now suffers from PTSD. Unable to move on from this, he moves to Kirkwall, where they are a little more strict over their mages thinking that this Circle would be a good fit for him, thinking that there is no way anything bad could ever happen here. He says things like “Mages cannot be treated like you and me” out of fear, and ignorance. What he once understand seems terrifying and foreign to him. But as the years pass, he begins to see the corruption of the templars around him, even Meredith who he respected. And by the end of Dragon Age 2, he can no longer agree with Meredith. A group of innocent mages approaches them, begging for their lives. While Meredith would have them slaughtered, Cullen stands in to protect them. And Meredith says to him exactly what he said when he first came to Kirkwall “Mages are not people like you and I, they cannot be trusted.” and she says “Are you willing to risk the lives of innocent people, of ALL your brothers in arms on the off chance that they AREN’T blood mages?” and he says to her “Yes, because I believe thats what being a templar is about.” It’s called character development, you might have heard of it. Cullen started out as someone who trusted mages, to someone who was terrified of them based on the trauma he endured in fereldan to someone who learned that both Templars and Mages are corrupt and wants to work to provide a world that both of them can function in. Which is a direct quote from his writer. Fifth, get the fuck out of the tag.
This comparison does have one thing going for it, and it’s that Templars don’t understand the personal difficulties of being a mage, while mages do. It’s canon - Templars and other anti-mage characters repeatedly express sympathy for the ‘burden’ of magic, except they use that understanding as justification for regulation of persons.
So when it comes to education, medical needs, environment building, and many personal lifestyle choices, its mages that have the first and foremost say in what they want for themselves. The fact that Templars decide for them what mages should and should not do or have isn’t right.
After all, Thedas is crawling with demons, but demons aren’t coming for the Templars, they’re making beelines for mages, and that struggle starts around age 12 so mages know better than Templars the dangers of magic overall.
Templars may see themselves as protectors of mages, but they’re not doing a very good job, considering that abuse is canonically a very common phenomenon that happens in the Circles. They don’t know how to take care of the people they’re responsible for.
Tevinter isn’t the only province that has mages in power. Nevarra, Rivain, and the Dalish all have magic-heavy cultures and canonically have mages in positions of power and control. Rivain was in fact doing just fine until the Chantry got offended and Annulled the entire Circle with no justification.
And Fenris says that Tevinter isn’t a complete magocracy, he says that only a few mages are privileged and everyone else becomes slaves.
Yeah, so, just my two cents.
Hit post limit on my personal, so moving here. Are you really honestly defending this comparison because its really actually disgusting??? And did you read anything I said? 1. It's true, Templars have no real knowledge of what its like to be a mage but that doesn't compare to having an abortion. This would have been more comparable if they had used patients with mental illness and doctors. Still offensive, speaking as a patient with mental illness, but at least it would make more fucking sense and not be completely gross. 2. I never said that the system couldn't be improved, I am only stating facts as to how the system is supposed to function and how things typically are seen within the Dragon Age world. 3. Right, as I said, demons from a magical dreamworld. Templars don't have the whispering of demons in their ear, typically, mages do. Which is why mages are dangerous and do need to be controlled but not opressed, and abused. Like I said, the system can improved. 4.Thats what I said. 5. Yes, it is typically the experience that mages taught in a more free environment where they are still taught the dangers of demons are less likely to turn to blood magic, which is part of the evidence that the system can be improved, but someone would still need to be around to police them and keep people safe if things do go bad. You would need a group that could defend against magic and demons for this. IE The Templars. 6. He says that mages willing to perform blood magic and own slaves are in power yes, and the ones who refused are made slaves. He did not say only a few because it is not only a few.

Alistair’s face was burning hot as Zevran’s finger met his lip. He over fell over the back of the log again, forgetting it was there as he tried to back up again.
He inhaled sharply, swallowing hard as he looked down at the elf “What do you mean wrongly? I mean…I don’t really have much to offer, I guess…I’m the bastard son of an indiscreet King and a chamber maid, I’m a Grey Warden…I grew up in the chantry…I don’t quite have your…skills.” Alistair’s face twisted in frustration as he admitted the last part.
Scoffing softly as he followed Alistair’s newest attempt to retreat, Zevran shook his head and laughed, the sound low and intimate.
"Some skills can be learned easily enough. But there is always something to be said for a certain native charm. And that, caro, you have in spades.” The Warden was already flushed an impressively vivid pink, was clearly disconcerted, skittish and far more appealing than he apparently had the capacity to realize. Yet, at least, and the assassin gripped the other man’s upper arms, exasperation evident in his tone.
"Alistair— hold still, would you? You look as if you fear for more than your life. On my magnificent leather boots I pledge, I mean you no harm in the slightest.”
Expression uncharacteristically earnest, Zevran continued, leaning in and tapping the Warden’s breastplate above his heart. “Beyond your other appealing qualities— bravery, morality— all that sort of thing, I hope you would consider me qualified to judge attractiveness, if nothing else. For you, my friend, are a very beautiful man. Do not doubt it.”
"I fear being humiliated, thats for sure." The blonde try to still himself as Zevran ordered him to do, his hands fidgeting slightly while he attempted to keep them at his side. "I'm not sure I quite agree with you though that never hurts to hear but does that really matter all that much?" Alistair asked, giving the smaller man a weak smile. "I don't want her to like me because I'm good-looking, I want her to like me because...because she sees something in me, or something deep and meaningful like that."

”What did you just say?”
"Uh, I said, Greetings, m'lady! I am Alistiar, King of Fereldan, it is a pleasure to meet you."
Alistair watched as the assassin moved from his seat, taking a step back as Zevran invaded his personal space. “W-what are you—” he stammered, hitting the log behind him and almost stumbling back but catching himself. Zevran had him cornered.
"Uh, uh—I—…" The man didn’t know what to do with his hands, he raised then up, back down, then up again and then over his head "I would, uhm, a-ask her if she was—er—feeling ill…I think…"
Snorting audibly, Zevran shook his head as he closed the small distance that had opened between them.
"If that is an example of your technique, I no longer wonder why you had need of me.” Reaching up to press a finger briefly against Alistair’s lips to silence the stammering before he could further agitate himself, Zevran’s hands curled over his shoulders, steadying himself as he rose up on his toes to reach the taller man more easily.
"Do you somehow wrongly presume that you are not worthy of her attention?" Breath fanning over the Warden’s neck, over his ear, the assassin’s voice fell, something rich and insinuatory lurking beneath his tone. "Or is it only that you do not feel worthy of such interest at all?”

commanderliatabris replied to your post: “ooc; why don’t they just get an army of mages, go down to the deep…”:
probably because of the smoke, it would create in the tunnels.
Hmmmm, I’m sure they could find a way to counteract that
Well in the big areas sure but they are also small tunnels and they would soon suffocate than kill or darkspawn. The best thing is kill the sources. Or wait until the other two archdemons are slain.
Those are good points but even without an archdemon, there are still Darkspawn
