Azzi Fudd needs a better coach

respectfully, i think azzi fudd needs fans who have better patience, grace, and understanding of the transition from college to the wnba 😅

we are three games into the season for a wings team that is already so different from last year. they have 7 returning players and 5 new ones. they have a new head coach (who is new to coaching the wnba) and coaching staff. they have also already seen an improvement in record because they won their first game of the season (last year, they didn’t win until game 5… against connecticut, and then they didn’t win again until game 13).

in other words, the wings are working with a lot of new variables and it will take some time for them to figure out the best system—and things are already going better than last year despite those growing pains.

yet, knowing all of this, i have seen far too many fans who are way too comfortable completely disparaging everybody around azzi because they do not like how these three games have gone for her. saying nasty things on wings socials about her coaches, her teammates, her girlfriend. harrassing admin about her minutes. acting like the wings concocted some evil master plan to ruin her rookie year. demanding a trade or a start. even selling their tickets?

all i know is azzi fudd has not, nor will she ever, complain like people are on her behalf and it probably makes it harder for her to adjust when her fans are shitting on her coach en masse for how three (3) games have gone 🥴

Do you remember your first meeting?

Gabby Williams: I saw Marine play in 2017 when I was at UConn; she was with the French national team. And the first time we faced each other was in the WNBA in 2019.

What were your first impressions of each other's game?

Marine Johannès: Gabby played point guard in Chicago, while at UConn we saw her play center, so I noticed her versatility, and that's what impressed me the most.

Gabby Williams: James Wade, our coach in Chicago, when we were watching Marine, said something like, "She looks thin, but watch out, she's super strong!" (Laughs). And against us, she made some great plays.

Since then, you've been teammates at the club level and on the French national team. Are your playing styles complementary?

Gabby Williams: Yes. I'm more of a drive player, I attack the paint, so with a player who can shoot like Marine, it opens up space for me. And besides being a shooter, she's very talented as a passer, she can read the game, the defense, so for someone like me who likes to move off the ball, I know she'll find me.

Marine Johannès: We also complement each other in terms of our mindsets. Gabby has a slightly more American mindset, and I'm naturally a bit more French, and I find that interesting.

Gabby Williams: We learn things from each other. After my first summer with the French national team, I told my teammates in the United States, "Marine taught me to have more fun on the court." And I taught her a little... (Thinks) Tell me, what did I teach you?

Marine Johannès: Not to pay attention to others. Things about self-confidence. The Americans give the impression of having no doubts on the court, and Gabby has it all. That's what she brings to the French national team, to me, and to the others as well.
