Happy Filipino American History Month!!! (Or at least.. the tail end of it)

Ok FINALLY new covers! Sorry guys.. I know it’s been a minute, but I didn’t want to just phone in a Ned’s Lola idea.. and to be honest wasn’t getting a whole lot of inspiration from Marvel this year other than the the 2 films these covers are emulating.

Slide 1 - Believe it or not, I only recently caught Across the Spider-Verse.. but once I did, I instantly knew I wanted to do the Royal Dansk bit there. My original idea was that Miles Morales found a container that actually had a single butter cookie and it was causing an anomaly that was destroying the multiverse because it shouldn’t exist. And all the infinite Lolas would be there trying to fix it, I guess? I felt like that idea was just overcomplicating things, so I streamlined it. BTW my favorite part is that Datu Lola (Lola-Lola) straight up stores a conquistador skull in her container. (It’s probably Magellan’s skull because that dumbass dies in all universes)

Slide 2 - For the GotG 3 cover, it took me a bit to figure out a reason why the villain @nicosantos plays (Theel) would be interacting with Ned and Lola in any shape or form. The “evil nursing degree” Angle was perfect (Disclaimer- Nurses, I know there is no such thing as an evil nursing degree.. you are all -literally- life savers out here) As a kid I used to love those old school team comics (like Justice League) with the member roll call on the cover via a side strip with their floating heads - wanted to do the same thing, and managed to throw in some bits in there.

Last drop of Ned’s Lola for ‘22!

- First slide: I honestly have no idea if either of my Grandmas sang this song to me, but I know it well. I distinctly remember my Great Grandma (!) singing it to someone (my Bro I think?) I also wanted to do a tribute to my Grandma Tina, so younger Lola looks slightly more like her.

- Second slide: Wanted to celebrate it being the anniversary of when we first met Lola, so made sure it looked closer to Mary Rivera as possible. Also included the characters that were in her scene. Can you believe I never drew the other two Spider-Men until now? It’s not like people didn’t know they were in the film a month later.. but I was treating it like it was well kept secret (which it wasn’t) - but it’s important they’re here since they were a part of it all.

- Third slide: Uh I know this ‘future cover’ is a gag pointing out our NYE Filipino customs, but this one is a little personal for me. I lost both Grandmas before either could really watch me grow into an adult. I wish they were there when I got married. So at the very least I gave that to Ned (hence Betty being a part of it) (Also future Lola looks more like my Grandma Olimpia - aka ‘Oping’)

Ayyy! Take a break from arguing with your Tito about politics and check this small Thanksgiving Lola drop!

Couple things:

1st slide - that particular Seafood City is in National City, SD (near Paradise Hills, where I was raised) - I really like the idea that Namor told Ned’s family he needs to return home, so they flew him across country only to bring him to my old hood.

2nd slide - hope I don’t offend any races that love casserole. But also… why though? And for the record, my Grandma actually did cook turkey for us on Thanksgiving, but it felt weird having it on there so I changed it to Lechon (but you can tell it used to be a turkey)

Doing small Ned’s Lola posts for the holidays! This one is for Fil-Am History Month & Halloween!

- 1st slide - So this evolved a great deal, I initially wanted to transform the Jeopardy meme into a cover and keep it in the MCU as like a Shang-Chi speaking out for us. But Ike has actually never been in a Marvel film (as far as I know), so I brought his Suicide Squad character over. At which point I was like - well if I’m going to do that, I should bring over any Filipina/o characters from the DCU. Hence Ella Jay Basco (Cassandra) and Ivory Aquino (Alysia) But then I was like, something didn’t feel right - well if this is a multiverse thing, I felt like I needed to ask for Kuya and Bayani to be there. And, of course, the usuals are here - Jacob B (Ned), Ned’s Lola, Ginger G (Nikki), Dave B (Drax), Yssa (Sonya), Eugene C (Casey), Jane R(Ayla), Hailee(Kate), and Iris(Wave)!

- 2nd slide - The Halloween cover. Really wanted to do some of our mythological creatures, but in that old Jack Kirby style. When I started these covers, the intent was to keep with the old school style, but I feel like I’ve strayed a bit. By the way, forget horror masters.. man our folklore digs deep in some really messed up stuff. Have you guys read what a Tiyanik is/does? Man either the most demonic things ever just exist in the Phils, or our ancestors got the most twisted creative imagination.

Nikki Ramos forever! Made a couple covers.. If I haven’t mentioned Ginger Gonzaga is fantastic as Nikki in #SheHulkAttorneyAtLaw  then I’m doing it now. (Also eff Josh - I’m ok with saying that about a Filipino character because the actor that plays him says it too) - REALLY wanted to see a confrontation scene between the two of them.. like Nikki finds out who Josh is via Social media or something because the Fil-Am community is interconnected.

Hey have a new Ned’s Lola (& Friends) drop!!! Sorry it took so long.. and SPOILER warning - the last cover is a 5 month spoiler from Doctor Strange 2 Wanted to celebrate ALL the Filipina/Filipino actors that have been in the MCU with Sakit Wars (homage to the first issue of ‘Secret Wars’, which is now an upcoming film in a future Marvel phase) (For ref: https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Marvel_Super_Heroes_Secret_Wars_Vol_1_1 ) This Includes: - Yssa Mei Panganiban, - the Black Widow Sonya from the flashback scene from Hawkeye. I’m assuming she is the best stick fighter among her sisters because it’s in her DNA.. - Eugene Cordero, -“Casey” from the Loki series. Potentially the most powerful one here since he can be running around pushing an office cart filled with Infinity Stones. - Mary Rivera as Ned’s Lola (obviously) (eternal thanks to @angielanikelly for letting her know these exist) - Ginger Gonzaga, -“Nikki” from the upcoming She-Hulk series on D+ - Jane Rumbaua, Ayla Perez, the Diplomat from Falcon & Winter Soldier on D+ — just assuming she was made an official SHIELD Agent after she helped Cap out. - Dave Bautista, as Drax - Hailee Steinfeld, as Hawkeye/Kate Bishop - Ned (obviously), using the Sling Ring - Wave, who I’m assuming will be in a future Marvel film at some point. In the meantime, my friend Iris is the ref - Ari Agbayani, the fil-am Captain America, who I also assume will be in the MCU in the future. Not shown yet: Nico Santos, who's in Guardians 3 -- uh but I have no idea what he looks like, he'll have to be in the next issue. Other notes: - In the comics, Ned Leeds becomes the Hobgoblin at some point, but I highly doubt that happens because of Lola - Finally figured out a casino/slot machine cover which would have been a big deal to my own Grandma, who loved going to Vegas (I wish she was still around when I was old enough to go)

Finally saw Thor: Love & Hip-Hop — I like the fact that Wonder Woman’s Dad is a narcissistic ass in the MCU (close to his Mythological roots)

Here’s more Ned’s Lola covers! HAPPY AAPI HERITAGE MONTH! (I mean as happy as you can get it to be, considering the world is hot garbage right now) So when I said I’d stop doing big drops I was almost full on lying. This is like the biggest drop yet. And for one reason or another, my brain went “Avengers” so everything here is Ned and Lola teaming up with someone from the greater MCU If you can’t tell, super hyped about Thor: Love and Thunder coming soon.. Thor & Spidey are my Marvel favorites. My only regret is I don’t have Natalie Portman’s Thor in here.. maybe after the movie? But if I do any more “Ned’s Lola” drops, I should also try to get back to the Spider-Man universe (Man anyone have a good Rhino idea? That one has me stumped.) If you’re confused about the beach one, just look up “Charles Atlas comic book ad” - when I was kid, comic books always had this goofy advertisement. I wanted to make sure I drew ‘Wave’ somewhere considering she’s the first major Filipina in Marvel.. and she’s ocean-based so I thought this might be the funniest place to put her.  FYI, these were ready a few days ago, but for various reasons I’ve been making minor alterations. Also I’ve been holding off posting almost any art because of the BS happening in current events.. like I would for real real start a post then some awful news happened so I’d delete it.. then start it again then delete it. But then I realized maybe something here will make someone at least half smile. Or even if it makes you roll your eyes, I’ll take it. Prints will be up in the usual places. Ok so I was dead wrong about not making any more 'drops' of these. I kinda had an idea to tie into "Into The Spiderverse" and these 3 covers came out of it. Some notes:

The 'Kain Na' cover is like my very first idea from day 1, because 100% in the actual MCU Peter Parker has been to Ned's house and Lola has cooked him adobo or pancit. I just expanded the idea a little because she would feed the whole Spider-Fam.. notice MJ must have been reprimanded for wasting pandesal so anytime Lola is nearby, she shows her she's eating one.

#So the bad news is, this is my last big ‘drop’ of Ned’s Lola covers. My schedule is busier these days so it takes me longer to make these. I’ll still do them, but they’ll probably trickle in one or two at a time here on Insta.

The good news is, included with the usual 5 covers, I did a bonus one-page comic ‘ad’ page.. reminiscent of the ones Marvel and DC would put in their issues, advertising Hostess products. It’s a real thing, you should look them up and see how ludicrous they were.

(BTW in my head canon, Kate Bishop is like Ned’s second cousin, so she knows full well who would train her in Tsinelas throwing. I also put her in the wedding cover)

Droppin’ the new covers for The Further Adventures of Ned’s Lola ! The Carnage one is my absolute favorite - it’s like my Magnum Opus of Lola art! I have serious doubts that I’ll top it. Still have some very slight SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home on a couple of these, fyi. Also, similar to what I did last time, two of the “issue” numbers point to the birth years of my Lolas (1923 and 1928)
