I keep rolling over in my head the idea of a Hollow Knight crossover with Ori And The Blind Forest.

Both take place in self-contained kingdoms, populated by creatures who are not humans. Nibel and Hallownest could very well be kingdoms in the same world. Hallownest claims to be the last and only civilization, but Cornifer mentions that he and Iselda moved to Dirtmouth from elsewhere. He’s certainly no Mantis, traitor or otherwise, and his fearful reaction to Deepnest would hardly suggest he’s from that village, either. Furthermore, I’m sure by the standards of Hallownest in its heyday, Nibel would be considered uncivilized wilderness as its only settlement of any size was the Forlorn Ruins. 

There are plenty of places to infer overlap between the two: the pale, treelike queen of Hallownest, and the very insectoid Gumon in Nibel. 

Hallownest features plant creatures, including the Moss Prophet who fervently worships the light and claims that light and life are one and the same. Some of the carvings in Greenpath claim that the plant creatures draw their very life from “moss and leaf” when in Ori, the literal life giver of the entire kingdom is the Spirit Tree. 

In Ori, emphasis is placed on the essential balance of light and dark. When Nibel’s light is snuffed, the forest succumbs- life withers, and strange beasts run wild. In Hollow Knight, Hallownest’s radiance becomes blinding, destructive- and much the same occurs.

Both stories feature the manifold children of a godlike being (Spirit Tree/Pale King), many of whom do not survive, leaving behind two survivors- a young child (Ori/the Little Knight) and an older, more powerful figure (Sein/the Pure Knight).

Ori is a child of light born into a period of darkness, tasked with restoring the light. The Knight is a child of darkness born into a period of light, tasked with, arguably, snuffing out the source of the corrupting light.

The two are pleasantly balanced, with Ori being far more maneuverable and having a ranged attack, to the much more physically powerful Knight- and also, having very different personalities evident in their behavior.

Thematically I feel like there could be a very interesting story here.

uhHHHH I don’t mean to be dramatic or anything but I literally wrote 50k words in two weeks without fuckening trying, like won NaNoWriMo in 2 weeks, TWO WEEKS, after joining 4thewords.com and I’m like

OK so it’s pretty much like Neopets + Gaia Online + RPG, But You Level Up Through Writing

You “battle” cute online critters with your word count

You can dress up your avatar and whatnot and there are different regions and crafting quests

and my weird brain apparently responds VERY WELL to nerd gamification

because Holy Shit I wrote 50,600 words in 2 fuckening weeks

and am now 4thewords’ new hype squad

Okay so

In regards to my Ori fangame post, I don't think I have the ability to make one. No music experience, no coding knowledge, a messy art style...

Yet, still I want to do it. There's a weird feeling I get when I think about the Spirit Tree and the forest. Sein gives the idea that the Tree brought light, and then life, to the land. The forests were said to have grown, presumably after the Spirit Tree had settled his roots. Naru was there when he was a sapling. But the specifics are so vague. For instance...

Where did he come from?

We get only a little bit of information regarding the Tree himself. Sein acts as his eyes and light, he is the source of life in the forest. He is the father of the spirit guardians. He also resembles the Ancestral Trees, the remains of the guardians that fell trying to save their home.

So it's not a huge stretch to think he, too, was a guardian once.

Now a tree doesn't have eyes, and is therefore "blind," yet Sein seems very comfortable trailing and aiding Ori, considering they're just an eyeball. Maybe they had done this before. They could lend their light, explain the meanings, describe things a young guardian might not be able to see and act as their eyes.

So perhaps, the Spirit Tree, when he was a spirit guardian, was blind and had Sein partnered with him so he can go about normally. Perhaps he's from a region far off, and wandered towards the dark of the Black Root Burrows out of curiosity. The creatures there would meet him with mixed reactions. Some would recognize the danger he and his light are, and may flee or attack. Others may approach of their own curiosity. But perhaps all cower to something else, a greater force that threatened them.

And the young guardian, perhaps having made friends with someone, wants to help protect them.

It's nothing clear in my head, but I see the young guardian and Sein being separated, and the guardian having to blindly fend for himself. While Sein tries to make their way back to him, the guardian fights and grows weak.

Before Sein is close enough to call out to him, but is able to see him, he makes a last-ditch attempt to destroy the threat by bursting into light. It's successful, but he dies in the process. Sein lingers by the spot he fell for days before, finally, a sprout grows where he had perished.

And thus began the life of the Spirit Tree.

And here's a little thing I also thought: Naru's mother was never shown. I assume she had one, but anything's possible. Still, considering Naru's father's reaction upon seeing his only child playing with the creatures of light, maybe there's a little more to this. Perhaps he lost his mate to the light?

Or in this scenario, he lost his mate to the guardian's explosion.

Most of this was made in a whim, so idk how people would like this idea, but it's what I had.
