[hornets and sacrificial blades] is my ongoing qpr bloodymary fic, where Simon brings all the horrors with him and we have ourselves some cosmic horror/hope genre mishmash. It's horror, it's thriller, it's absurdist comedy, it's two guys trying to figure out where to go from here for Big Science and for kindness. Also the Hail Mary is haunted and a huge telepathic tree has opinions on your music taste?

So for context for everyone, that scenes goes as such: Simon gets the SM-8 info and notices all the fucked up sores and boils on the sub. He gets on the console and drives to the meeting point. We see the mutations grow teeth and the blood invade more of the sub. The blood drips on his head, Simon flinches, and we hear the growl. He looks to his hand, glances at the pendant, and then back to the bandages. That's when he removes them and sees the mutations on himself. Then we get to the meeting with Ava.

Also, I think it's interesting to note that the blood only starts dissolving Simon after the God "witnessed" him.

Simon's only alive after the anomaly vaporized him because of the God. There's some kind of debt thing happening, possibly. "You owe me". At this point, even if Simon were to magically blip out of the ocean in a fix-it scenario, the God saw him. Simon saw the Light. He will never be the same, fundamentally changed in his soul.

He's been marked for hell. I think the ocean was trying to claim him, or "return him to blood", here.

Not only that, but even blood that isn't touching him at the time, but has touched him at any point, starts to affect him. He was perfectly clean from the blood spurt back in the hull breach scene, but only after this the mark it left on him begins to appear and burn up his face.

And the same happens with the sub! There had been points of blood dripping in through the rust of the sub's hull, and with the condensation it's getting everywhere even if diluted. We can see in this picture that it's not all blood and not all water!

The moment Simon is back, those pockmarks letting the moisture in turn into the metallic boils and blisters inside the sub, letting more and more blood inside.

The effect the sub and Simon go through in contact with the blood isn't that different either, we even see the walls growing teeth and the blisters have similar textures.

Same condensation drip placement gets all bloodied first on the console, same dent from the Eel's bite earlier gets pockmarked first.

Makes me wonder just how much separation there is between Simon and the sub at this point, in the Eye's point of view. Or how much separation there is between dead and alive, living and nonliving.

i'm not sure if this has been discussed in the Iron Lung game community, even prior to the movie. i have to assume that it was but i cant find it cus searching "iron lung game navigation" is a shot to the foot bones.

but how do they. navigate. space? assuming general scifi rules where interstellar travel is a given due to full star maps and infinite energy recator or smth, how do they navigate and find anything in deep space?

if the stars are gone and so are "habitable" planets... how do they find coordinates for anything? yes the ghost light is there but by the time they get to it, its meaningless. without a star's gravity well, the entire cosmos goes out of predictable orbit patterns, moons are way too small to track even within a solar system radius, much less outside of it. do they just shoot for the last known location of a solar system and hope to catch whatever moons that got slingshotted out into the void and, put a tracker beacon on them?

my headcanon for it is. the stars and planets are gone, BUT orbital patterns are still the same. for some unknown reason, they still behave exactly as before, the gravity wells are there but the mass responsible for them aren't. it fits with the cosmic horror bullshit, at least!

probably by using simulations of where known celestial objects would be if everything was normal. also anything further than 21 light years away would theoretically still be visible with good enough equipment, and regular observations would be able to keep track of and modify star maps as changes occur. the movie leans more into the fiction side of science-fiction, but even so the process would be pretty slow, not like turning off the lights. assuming, as it does, that the quiet rapture wouldn't have any effect on how gravity behaves, you could spend a lifetime just documenting how the universe is shutting down.

the thing is, i'm pretty sure the story takes place in our solar system. eden station orbits mars and the coi stations/ships are close enough for a direct attack. so to the extent that navigation is needed, it would be easier by dint of the area being more familiar. the blood moons just happened to be found here per horror sci-fi rules. also if there were people doing interstellar travel at the time they would just kind of. stop? i guess? since there's nowhere to travel from or to anymore.

even if you follow the path of stuff through ghost light, by the time you arrive at said star system then the whole thing has long since been scattered.

you might be able to track some of the changes over time (if you stay put) but that wouldn't do much for you at arrival since you can only mostly guesstimate what the slingshot trajectory of whatever moons were present in the system are gone. unless you have entirely and properly charted the destination system, so you know the mass and velocities of everything, then you can calculate with more accuracy. otherwise? you're dead in the water!

i bring this up because of the way moons and planets are named in the lore. why call named moons like Europa, Io, Deimos, etc stuff like "AT-5"? we wouldn't, we'd call them by their names. while i agree and prefer if the story takes place in the solar system only, taking it as a proper space scifi situation with broad and wide interstellar travel, then that raises my initial question.

it also raises my own ponderings of how the Quiet Rapture would unfold in the long run!

if we have widespread interstellar travel, then we would have a number of ships arriving back in Sol, probably with depletes resources because they might have espected to arrive for restock and refuel, and finding the situation at hand almost unexpectedly! what do you do with this ship? how do you provide for the crew and divy up whatever resources they might still have? who do they join faction-wise, if anyone? how many free agents do we have floating around in Sol?

Iron Lung Details: Dial gauges - Camera panel and Control console

@retrograde-raven alright so, here's the best I could get from the movie. here's to hoping we get some BTS footage with better details at some point?

Camera panel: More of a fun fact about the gauges, most of them have the same fabricator mark and info at the bottom. most of them don't have any discernable information or unit marker besides a couple that I can tell.

This one says clearly "absolute pressure" and has a metallic ring on the backing, but i can't make out any relevant unit. it does seem to go to 90.

This one I can't quite figure out, and the first word is obscured. Sharpening any further than this just crunches up the image and makes it harder to make out.

These two smallers ones are for Miliamperes and Mili...smth.

The black board of dials at the bottom of the camera panel reminds me a bit of a radio audio board thingie, so production might have used one from a scrapyard or smth. The dials are similar to the previous ones.

THIS ONE, i could get close enough to tell something is written really faintly, but I can't make out the word. smth-NO? and you can sort of make out the fabricator badge thingie.

I've also tried to track if the hands move at all, or change as the movie goes on, but i don't think they've budged once regardless of what was going on.

Control console: They don't react to the context of the scene independently. for example in this scene during the sub ascention, the outside pressure gauge should have gone down but it's the same as when the sub was in the red range.

In the eyeball scene right after the engine gets rebooted, we see the left-most gauge move. Once the hull breach alarm starts, we see all three bob at the highest marker.

During the ramming scene, we get a nice and close view of one of the dials, and it says Lbs force, so it's a pressure gauge. They all have the same punch labels tacked onto the dial face, so I think we can assume they are all pressure measurements.

Ava + turning a blind eye to Simon

The framing choice to obscure her right eye, in favor of her left blinded eye is amazing. She's turning a blind eye to Simon's situation, she's blind to him as a person and to his concerns about his safety. When her right eye visible, it gets hidden by shadows, or her focus is somewhere else. By hiding her uninjured side, she also protects herself from showing her vulnerabilities and doubts, her own humanity. Eyes are the window to the soul, so her remaining one is guarded. We only see her as someone touched by strife and hardship, marked by it and made worse for it.

The first major time we see Shadowman, he's moving towards the back of the SM-13, moving to hide against the terminal wall, away from Simon, who is standing near the front console.

The second major instance of this, the Shadowman is standing near the front console, and Simon is moving to hide against the terminal wall.

Now, I'm just going off of memory here, because I'm neck-deep in another analysis right now, but could it be possible that they quite literally swapped places in these mirroring scenes?

I know that we got some insight on the Shadowman, how it's literally "Simon's shadow" and him seeing himself, how it was almost a cut-concept entirely, but the "Simon's shadow" part tipped me off that this thing could quite literally be copying him in some instances, if not all of them.

What do you guys think?

My personal theory that I need to be able to rewatch and check: when Simon sees the Shadowman, he's literally seeing himself in different moments of space time, as he was acting, but as the Red Eyed God planned for him. It's time-space being slightly warped.

This also applies to the tape being pulled from the button when he's in the crawlspace: if I remember, there is a moment later that he does pull it off angrily.

Right now I will ask the blogger (forgot the url) that broke down the coordinates to see if we can check Simon's coordinates in these exact moments: my theory is that these moments happen when Simon is crossing over points he already passed or will futurely pass, allowing time-space to cross.

Granted, I only imagined all this because I theorize that the Light is a White Hole (and a bts concept of the Light/Portal looking like a black hole but white makes me go insane), but still, I do think there's time-space shenanigans happening

Repeating what I said here:

The SM-13's coordinates are visible onscreen at 00:13:01 when the proximity alert first goes off, placing it at 389.98, 220.63. Directly after at 00:13:32 and 00:13:50 the SM-13 is struck by the Eel, which throws it about 75 meters. The coordinates are visible onscreen again at 00:13:58 when the SM-13's tether is pulled taut: 461.36, 249.90.

The SM-13 is pulled up, then dropped again at 00:22:28. The coordinates aren't visible at the first sighting (00:25:31) as the SM-13 is still descending, but presumably it touched down within a few meters of it's last location. The coordinates at the second sighting (01:26:23) are 462.15, 241.27 (seen clearly at 01:30:02).

Which means there was only about 8 meters between where the SM-13 was first pulled up and where Simon saw his Shadow for the second time.

Additionally, I timed out the scenes:

First Sighting

Simon turns towards the stern of the ship and sees his Shadow at 00:25:31

Simon's Shadow sidesteps behind the portside partition wall at 00:25:37

Simon gets up from the pilot's chair at 00:25:42

Simon reaches for a weapon, making a small rustling sound at 00:25:44

Simon sees his Shadow for about six seconds— another five for Simon to get up, another two before the rustling sound

Second Sighting

Simon sees his Shadow sitting at the controls at 01:26:23

Simon's Shadow turns towards the stern and sees Simon at 01:26:24

Simon sidesteps behind the portside partition wall at 01:26:30

A faint creak from the pilot's chair is heard at 01:26:35

Small rustling sound is heard at 01:26:38

To add to the whole timing thing and that this is just the same scene but in different povs and placements, even the way they move is incredibly similar! Simon doesn't quite do the head tilt the Shadowman does when on the chair placement, but Simon does do the sideways slide behidn the computer console wall that the Shadowman does!

okay so for context, this is what the arms looked like before the bandages come off

the right wrist is slightly paler but that looks more like dirt and grime than mutation and blood stuffs. he also still have the bracelet from his previous pendant, it's heavily implied in the scene he finds TGWTYCW's pendant, because of the camera pan to the half-opened metal ring on it. the left arm is entirely bandaged and the bracelet is on top.

immediately after getting the bandages off, the wrist is visibly paler and cleaner, matching the top of his palm.

we get a cleaner comparison on the right wrist though, since it's visible before adn after the bandages come off. the mutations don't crawl up past the bandage line. and yes you can still sort of see the handcuff marks on it.

so it COULD be makeup nuances, especially between shots, but also..... i can't help but Ponder.
