From the way he acts around Spock, and the way he acts around Kirk, I always figured he was one of those practical, easygoing people who are incredibly talented at their jobs but continually have to deal with people in charge that are idiots. Bosses who like to get in the way, push stupid designs or ideas on them, tangle the work up in politics, and don’t listen when they should. The kind of guys who WOULD tell him to do something dangerous from an engineering perspective and then try to blame him when it screws everything up.

Then there’s Kirk, who is also incredibly talented at his job, knows to back the fuck up and let Scotty be a genius, and is also pretty damn fun to go drinking with. He’s the kind of commander every engineer wants to have. And sure, Spock isn’t Kirk, he’s not friendly and warm, but he’s smart and practical and also knows when to shut the fuck up and let Scotty be a genius. He’s a perfectly good commander for a career military engineer to have as a boss. Like, just the fact that Spock isn’t one of Those Idiots and can actually understand the schematics Scotty hands him is more than enough for Scotty to give him a cheerful hello every day of his life even if Spock never says it back.

Like, who gives a fuck if he never smiles, did you see him finish all that paperwork, he got us an extra 2% to our budget and made that one inspector we all hate turn beet red and storm off. Incredible. Proud to serve with him.
