btw you're allowed to enjoy two differing interpretations of the same character and you don't have to justify why you like it to anyone. you can like your evil character to be malicious and serious and you can like depicting them as a silly goober. you can enjoy seeing people draw two characters in all sorts of different contexts and dynamics without having to pick one over the other. you don't have to come up with a complex reason. you don't have to explain yourself to anyone. you can like a character multiple ways without having to justify why it's not problematic or why it's not weird. do what you want. it's fandom, not a testimony before the court.

Glad you asked. I have arrived at 'modern flax is Bullshit compared to what we had in historical textiles, the flax widely available for handspinning is basically the tow that would be discarded from textile creation and used with tar to caulk ships back in the day'

This naturally led me down a hole of 'why is the staple length of this stuff a bullshit 6 inches' and the answer is 'we have bred modern flax more for the oil than the fiber because cotton usurped the place of everyday textile thanks to slavery and the cotton gin'

Anyway, THIS led me to a rabbit hole that culminated in me finding flax seed bred for proper 30 inch tall plants for fiber, sold by some fellow minded nerds on a website that has not been updated since 1998 and you have to email them to buy anything.

Anyway how are all of you doing.

This right here is part of why modern linen is a pale shadow of historical linen. Legitimately it cannot be properly replicated by machines. It HAS to be made by human hands if you want the best quality.

I grew up going to Landis Valley! They are a museum with demonstrations of traditional farming and craft skills.

You might also be interested in the PA Flax Project which is trying to increase flax production in Pennsylvania. They are working with farmers and building a mill for one stage of flax processing, and they also have a project for home gardeners to grow a square yard of flax. There are also events, mostly around Philadelphia.

My background is in textile design, and while it's not my specialty, I've heard about some challenges with processing flax as they also apply to hemp and other bast fibers. Hemp would be a great crop to replace tobacco in several US regions, but it has to be processed on linen equipment not cotton. And the US never invested much in linen manufacturing for the reasons you listed. The effects of the cotton gin is worth reading about for anyone not familiar - just keep in mind that white Americans chose to increase slavery, it's not just some passive economic force as sometimes described.
