Tell people:

That you’re struggling

What you’re doing to deal with it

“I’m hard up for money right now so I’m taking on extra odd jobs to make rent.”

“We broke up recently so I’ve been watching a lot of action movies to cope.”

“My mental health is shit right now so I’m trying to force myself out of the house at least once a day.”

That way people don’t feel as obligated to step in and fix it than a bare statement of what’s happening. They can, if they want, say, “Good luck with that” and get on with their lives.

On the other hand, if they want to help you, they now know that you’re struggling, and what kinds of things they can do that might be helpful for you.
