Part 2
Mabon Ritual
This ritual was performed in the Nightshade Network on March 16, 2019, for the Southern Hemisphereâs celebration of Mabon.
1. Opening 2. Grounding and Shielding 3. Abundance and Gratitude Ritual 4. Intentions 5. Deity Work 6. Offerings 7. Omen
Supplies:
1. Pen and journal 2. Offerings for your deities and/or spirits. 3. Candles (four; can be tea lights if you prefer). 4. Divination tool of your choice 5. Something to represent abundance (apples, grapes, colours, abundance oil, etc.) 6. A single candle for the abundance ritual. 7. Optional: sage or cleansing incense.
Note: say the italicized words out loud <3
Opening:
Spirits of this place, ancestors that watch over us, and deities that assist us in this work. Today we use this space for our sacred rite and as we use this land, we acknowledge you. We share with you. We invite you. Stay if you will and go if you must.
Weâre gathered here on Mabon as the Earth turns from the Summer to the Spring to celebrate the final Harvest and the balance the Earth brings as days transition to equal parts day and equal parts night.
After this step is finished, light your candles on your altar or your ritual space. I like to configure them according to North, East, South, and West. If you cast circles for ritual work, do so now.
Hail to the watchtower in the North. The element of Earth. We call upon you to protect this space.
Hail to the watchtower in the East. The element of Air. We call upon you to protect this space.
Hail to the watchtower in the South. The element of Fire. We call upon you to protect this space.
Hail to the watchtower in the West. The element of Water. We call upon you to protect this space.
As you face the directions and call upon the watchtowers, visualize a protective circle around you and visualize it raising up. Nothing can pass your barrier, nothing that you donât want in your space.
Grounding and Shielding:
For grounding and shielding myself, I like to take a moment to cleanse myself and my energy with some sage or any form of cleansing incense (rosemary works well). After I finish this, I take a moment to take a breath and breathe in for a count of 7, hold for 7, and exhale for 7. While I do this, I visualize roots extending out of my body and linking me to the ground as my energy forms a small bubble in my solar plexus. As I become more grounded, I visualize my energy cocooning me and hardening, making this little protective bubble that wonât break.
Sit in the safe space of your bubble for a moment. Feel your energy and just take deep, steady breaths in and out.
Abundance Ritual:
As we begin, take a moment to reflect on the abundance in your life. This isnât always just material or financial gain. Think about your relationships, your job. Whatever youâre the most grateful for. While you think about these things, light your abundance candle.
If you work with a deity that is associated with abundance or gratitude, or even just a deity youâre extremely grateful for, call upon them and invite them into your circle. If you wish not to, just express your gratitude to the Earth and the Universe.
With me, light the rest of your four candles while saying the following:
I am thankful for my health, because it allows me to feel well. I am thankful for those that I consider family, because they provide me with love and support. I am thankful for the Earth, because it provides me with what I need. I am thankful for those I practice with because they help me feel spiritually complete. I am thankful for my deities and spirits, for they continue to guide me.
If there is anything else you are thankful for, say it now.
Now take a few moments to meditate on the flames of the candles and thinks about abundance and gratitude and what it means for you. Think about the people around you, for the things you have done.
Intentions:
Take your journal and just meditate on what Mabon means to you, how you celebrate it, and what you want to experience throughout this ritual. You can write this however you want (I use full sentences but if shorthand works for you, use it!). I have a ritual journal where I record all of this but if you do it on your phone, thatâs perfectly okay as well.
Once youâve written down your intentions, close your journal, lay a hand on the cover, and close your eyes. Visualize some of the energy going from yourself into your intentions. I visualize the words coming off of the page and disappearing into the air around me. You can visualize how these words go out into the universe however you want. If you want to take the paper and tear it up, go ahead. If you want to burn it, go ahead (just be sure to practice fire safety!).
Once this step is completed, feel free to share your intentions. You donât have to if you donât want to.
Deity/Spirit Work:
Take a moment to re-center yourself and your energy. This is where I like to put on a playlist that helps me relax. Once I feel re-centered I focus on the song thatâs playing and start doing my 7-7-7 breathing pattern again. I open my mind to my deities and spirits and allow their energy to come and visit me and ask them questions I have or let them teach me something. Allow 5-10 minutes for this. If you need longer, thatâs fine.
Once youâve come back from speaking with your deities and/or spirits, take a moment to just sit in the information youâve received and write it down in your ritual journal.
Offerings:
Once youâve written down your final thoughts, set out your offerings for your deities and/or spirits and thank them for their help in your work tonight. If youâd like you can sit in their presence a little longer.
Once you feel like the offering has been received, you can either consume it or dispose of it â whatever you feel is right.
Then I typically like to let my candles burn down but you can extinguish them how you see fit.
Divination:
A gift calls for a gift. As we have offered our deities and our spirits praises and sacrifices we now ask for their response to us. Open our hearts and give to us of your blessings.
The format for the divination while be a 3 spread: Past, Present, and Future.
Once your cards or runes etc are drawn or cast, take a few minutes to meditate on their meaning. Log them in your journal.
Ending:
We go now into the world, our offerings accepted and our bonds strengthened Confident that we walk under the gaze of the Universe and its protection.
11: The High Priestess
upright
intuition
sacred knowledge
divine feminine
the subconscious mind
when the upright high priestess turns up in a reading, it means you have access to knowledge deep in your soul. follow your gut! ways you can do this is by meditation, visualization, and participation in spiritual activities.
reversed
secrets
disconnected from intuition
withdrawal
silence
you might have your decisions be based on other peopleâs opinions however, you need to focus on yourself. try to isolate yourself to discover the truth.
another meaning could be that people are keeping secrets from you or arenât telling you the full truth. try to have an open and honest conversation with them.
Illness Banishing Poppet
One of the most heartbreaking things in the world is to watch someone you care for struggle with illness, while youâre unable to do anything to help them. While I will never recommend that anyone choose magical cures over modern medicine, this sympathetic spell may help to speed recovery.
Intent: To aid in recovering from an illness.
Materials:
Green or White Candle
Paper Poppet
Burning Bowl
Bowl for Herbs
Cedar Chips
Herbs: Green Sage, Parsley, Thyme, Thistle (If you canât find Thistle, then Fennel may be substituted.)
Cut out a small person-shaped paper figure to be your poppet. Place it in the bottom of a clean, dry fire-safe dish. Something with a flat bottom is preferable for this particular spell. Combine a pinchâs worth of each of your herbs in another dish and have them ready.
Light a green or white taper candle and carefully drip the wax onto the paper figure, creating a wax shell. Every so often, add a sprinkle of the herb blend to the bowl so that the herbs blend with the hot wax.
When the poppet is completely covered and resembles a wax figurine, wait for it to cool, then carefully scoop it out of the bowl.
Hold the poppet in your hands and name it thus:
âPoppet, I name you Sickness. As you diminish, so shall [Name]âs illness diminish. As you are destroyed, so shall [Name] be restored.â
Add cedar chips to the bowl and light them. Once the wood has caught, throw in the poppet. Burn the poppet until it is completely melted down to greasy ash, adding chips as needed. Wait for the bowl to cool, then rinse out the ash and either bury it or cast it into running water.
Disclaimer: This is not a substitute for medical treatment, nor is it a guarantee of recovery. It is only meant to help, and I hope it does.

Why the Major Arcana Arenât Majorly Useful (And How to Make Them Moreso)
The Major Arcana are often my studentsâ favorite part of Tarot Cards â and thatâs fair. Theyâre usually the most highly illustrated cards in a deck and since they have no parallel in playing cards, they often seem more mystical.
But my incredibly unpopular opinion is that they are not terribly useful.
When a person asks for a reading, they generally want to know some version of whatâs going on now and how things will end up. The function of the Major Arcana doesnât align very well in answering those questions as they often speak to self-development on a very high level.
Not every person who comes to you asking about their love life will be wrestling with all the lessons inherent in the Tower card. Theyâre more often than not going to hear that a new relationship is developing nicely, that a break up is imminent, or that their baggage is causing problems.
So how do the Major Arcana fit into a reading then?
The Major Arcana as a Journey
There are two key ways I use Major Arcana in a reading.
The first is as an insight to where in the âcycle of enlightenmentâ a person is/was/will be.
The Major Arcana can be read as the Foolâs journey to enlightenment or self-actualization. The first 10 cards represent the Foolâs development materially â learning skills, gaining power, and losing it all. The second 10 follow their journey for deeper meaning and satisfaction with life â the actual nature of justice, identity, and the universe. The Fool and The World are two sides of the same coin. Only someone whoâs seen the true nature of the World can know what a Fool they are. And the cycle repeats.
Learning the Major Arcana in this context can help you better remember them narratively.
Practice: Place your cards out like the diagram. Read each of the meanings of the âmaterialâ Major Arcana cards, imagine the Fool becoming each of the figures in the cards, and write a summary of the events. Then do the same with the âspiritualâ Major Arcana Cards.
The Major Arcana as a Series of Teachers
The other way I work with the Major Arcana is through understanding them as a series of teachers and gifts. This works well when they show up outside of an action or time oriented slot in a reading.
This is probably closer to how most people Iâve seen read them and I definitely still use it.
Practice: Meditate on the lessons of each Major Arcana card. Summarize how you would teach that lesson to another person and write it down.
 The Major Arcana as Dualities
This one has limited usefulness but I still find it comes in handy when I need to better explain why a card has shown up in the reading to a querent. Sometime this is best done by beginning to âread verticallyâ â something Iâll cover in a future post â with the Major Arcana.
Say the Empress shows up in a reading in the past slot. Knowing that she is 3 in the material sequence and 3 in the spiritual sequence is Death, I can begin to explain that the reason this card has shown up here is because of the cycle of death and rebirth and the querent in the past was at the beginning of that cycle either as a steward for someone else or their own (re)birth. It adds a bit of depth and perspective.
I use this more for some pairings than others. Sometimes this doesnât work perfectly but it can be a useful lens to look at them through.
Practice: Take each pair starting with 1 and 11. Read their meanings and see if you can sense their dual nature. If you do and it seems useful, jot down some notes about how the two relate to each other.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions, let me know!
*I never claim my way is the one true way. Take what is useful and leave the rest.
**If you wind up using this stuff in another setting, Iâd really appreciate it if you could cite me. This is my art. Donât steal, please credit.

âI call to Hades, lord of the dusky underworld, lord of the dead, provider of hearth and home to those who have passed from our presence. Mighty one, elder son of ancient Kronos and good Rhea, devoted husband of tender Persephone, to your hall do all men make their way one day. The riches of the earth are yours as well, Hades; all the precious gems locked inside sturdy stone, all the rich ores held within your realm; the seeds buried in the soil, waiting to pierce the surface, are likewise of your domain. Benevolent Hades, granter of wealth, from your hands fall riches untold; master of dreams, through you do our beloved dead yet speak; holder of the gates of the world to come, Hades, final friend of mankind, I call to you.â

How do sigils work?
To put it simply: sigils are symbols that are created to bring about a want or desire.Â
How they work, is like this:
Once you have crafted the sigil using your statement of intent (a statement of intent is the statement that outlines exactly what you want the sigil to accomplish, e.g. âi attract good luckâ or âi am free from nightmaresâ), you must charge your sigil. If you donât charge it, the sigil wonât work towards fulfilling its intentâwithout energy and intent, a sigil is just a squiggle!Â
CHARGING A SIGIL
When you charge an objectâin this instance your sigilâyou are taking energy from a source and putting it into something else. Anything that involves energy can charge something, but itâs important to bear in mind that some methods may be more effective at charging than others.Â
EXAMPLES OF WAYS TO CHARGE YOUR SIGIL:
Burn it (very common method).
Leave it in the sunlight/moonlight.
Run water over it (this could be via taps or rivers, for example).
Direct your personal energies into it (via touch or breath).
Orgasm.
Blood.
Pain.
Having it on your person during exercise/dancing/physical exertion.
Singing.
Holding it/having it on your person during times of intense emotion.
HOW DOES IT WORK NOW?
Once the sigil has been crafted and charged, it is active and will work passively. It will continue to work until the goal you intent to manifest has been achieved (this is applicable for sigils crafted for reasons such as âi get the job i applied forâ âone-time sort of things), or until the sigil has used the energy that you put into it.
The latter is applicable for longer lasting, more background types of intent, e.g. warding off nightmares, drawing luck or prosperity, protection, banishing. That sort of thing. When you feel as though the sigil has begun to stop working, you can charge it again.Â
Witch tip: glamours aren't just about making a person attractive. Glamours are simply bewitching the senses into perceiving something that isn't truly there. Glamours are a form of illusion and can be used for a variety of purposes.
Bedridden witch: Stale energy edition
Anyone whoâs been stuck in bed knows how quickly that stale feeling can build up! Hereâs some tips (both witchy and non) for clearing some of that unwanted energy. Thank you @tealeavesandpapertrees for requesting this post!
Open a window.
Hang wind chimes outside.
Hang a rainbow prism by your window, let the light cleanse your room.
Keep a small fan.
Flip over your blankets and pillows.
Use a Himalayan salt lamp.
Clean one area per day (can be minuscule or massive)
Let the moon wash over your room.
Burn candles, let the flame burn away any unwanted energy
Make a spritz with scented herbs or infused water.
Let the weather cleanse your room, no matter what it may be.
Manipulate the energy with your hands.
Do at least one hygienic thing per day.
Set out a bowl of water to absorb the energy, dispose accordingly.
Wash all of your bedding, place some cleansing sigils or herbs underneath your mattress.
Wash yourself, even if itâs just with a cloth.
Speak out loud (or communicate in some form) what things you would like to invite into your space.
Use a wax melter with some cheery scents.
Get a bouquet of fresh flowers.
Play music.
Burn incense, as the smoke wafts around the room let it push away any unwanted energy.
Visualize a light clearing out the energy.
Switch which side of the bed your lying on.
When it rains, imagine the rain washing away or drawing out the energy.
Laughter is the best medicine. Watch a funny or heartwarming movie that makes you feel content.
Keep a jar and write down anything you want to let go of. Destroy accordingly.
Change what clothes youâre wearing every couple of days.
Hold a crystal and imagine it sending out positive energy.
So many, many other things!

tarot cards in spells
i haven't seen a lot of people talking about how you can use tarot cards in spells, so i decided to make a post about it. please remember that this is just my personal experience and preference. i hope you enjoy!
why use tarot cards?
there is most likely a tarot card for every spell you could possibly do, so you can be really specific
tarot cards generally have a lot of imagery, and because of that they're really expressive, which i personally think can help with making your spell more effectice
they're easy to use. if you don't have a lot of ingredients, but own a tarot deck, you can easily do a spell with just them
how do i use them?
there's a lot of different ways to use them in spell casting. here are a few different methods that i have used and that has worked well for me!
visualization
this one is really easy! all you need is your card of choice, and a clear and focused mind. let's say that you're doing a spell to bring happiness to a friend. you take your card, for example The sun, and imagine your friend in the card. imagine them sitting on the horse, smiling. imagine them looking up at the sun and absorbing its energy, or them happily dancing in the fields. the possibilites are endless!
charging and enchanting
just take whatever object you want to enchant or charge, and then choose what card to use. if you want to attract new relationships, take your item of choice (for example a necklace you always wear) and put it on top of The ace of cups. let it charge for however long you want, and you're done! now your necklace is filled with the energy of The ace of cups, which is a card that stands for new relationships. simple as that!
symbolization
this kinda goes with the visualization method, but it's a little different. let's say that you're doing a binding spell on a storm. then you would take The tower, since it shows a storm, and do your binding. basically, you use the imagery on the card more than the meaning. this is probably more useful for more detailed decks, but i still wanted to include it!
again, remember that these aren't all the ways to use tarot cards in spells, and that it's all very personal and up to you. please do your own research on this too! anyways, that's all âĄ
