I got the most wonderful smile this morning.
Indecision is not a decision. It’s the lack of a decision. I can’t let anyone else influence this decision because if it’s not 100% my own I will never accept it. I’ve recently come to the realization that I am allowed to be confused. I felt bad for not having some kind of direct answer like people do in Hollywood movies. How after an hour and a half they suddenly know. I’m not a movie character. I have so many things to worry and focus on that I have had to put this on the back burner . I stand by my right to remain a lost mind right now. I’m sorry I got other people involved in this and I’m sorry I hurt them. I myself have been hurt and it’s a vicious cycle. I’m proud of you for taking the path that you have merely because it’s the path I could never force myself to take. Even now I struggle with letting things go and it has been hard for me to respect that. I’ve always been a fighter in these situations, while you obviously walk away. Maybe that’s a core difference that has set us apart. Neither choice is wrong, but both can be strength as well as a weakness. I just wish I could explain how this isn’t a simple matter of choice but a dark long road of trials and tribulations leading to an unclear answer. How on paper it looks like an easy fix, but in reality there’s a lot of healing and scarring that needs to be done. I don’t want to be bitter from my past. I want to grow. There’s been a lot of time and effort put into this and I simply don’t have the courage to walk away from a confusing situation. I hope your decisions don’t bitter your soul. I hope to speak to you again someday. I have full faith that I will live a fulfilling life because the world is always changing. New opportunities arise everyday and I could be in a completely different place tomorrow. This whole dilemma could be a forgotten memory in the future. Or not. But I want to grow from this however it turns out, and I believe that is what is most important.
Yeah, I am going to be THAT person for a sec...
Does anyone else think that Vanessa Hudgens’ dad’s death overshadowed her actual performance?
Every news article is praising her performance but immediately following their statement with “her dad would be proud” or “she gave the performance of a lifetime hours after her father’s death”.
Ok, yes, my heart breaks for her. Losing your father the day before you are performing live on national TV has to be incredibly difficult. And she handled it like a pro. But was she actually a good Rizzo? In my opinion: NO. She seemed like she was trying too hard to be tough. For Stockhard Channing (original Rizzo) it seemed natural. Her voice didnt sound right for the songs. Everything she did seemed fake and forced. Nothing about her acting seemed natural to me. While I don’t think she was absolutely terrible, I don’t think she was a good Rizzo. There had to have been a better actor out there. The only time I was impressed by her was when she sang “There are worse things I could do”. I thought she was wonderful singing that and her performance during that number really moved me. But other than that, I don’t think she deserves all the praise she is getting. I feel like she is getting it because her father died, and that’s not right. I’m not saying she should be torn apart by critics, but don’t give her your sympathy praise. That’s artificial and, in my opinion, worse than actually saying she wasn’t that good. Be honest. You can empathize with her and say she handled losing her father and taking on a big role like a true professional. But don’t act like you love her and she was the best thing since sliced bread just because she lost her father. I just wonder what people would truly be saying about her performance if her dad hadn’t passed away.
The real star of the show to me was Keke Palmer. She blew me away in every scene she was in. I think her name should be in the headlines, not Vanessa’s. It’s a shame that Keke’s performance of a lifetime is being over shadowed.
Just my opinion. If you truly though Vanessa’s performance was amazing, that’s great. I’m not knocking your opinion. But don’t be fake just because you feel bad for her.
Agreed, Vanessa was playing Stockard playing Rizzo. Yes, Stockard helped define the character but she is not the character. You have to bring your own flair.
Grease Live Review
Grease Live is a very strange mixture of rip off and originality. They made a huge deal about the cast being racially diverse but made sure each character was a replica from the movie, down to the matching hair and outfits. Performances from Keke Palmer and Boyz II Men were breaths of fresh air where they brought new personas to their characters, despite the seemingly tight parameters of the production. Where as Julianne Hough, Aaron Tviet, and Venessa Hudgen's (yes despite her amicable performance despite the circumstances,) clear reenactments of their big screen counterparts came off cheesy (not campy, cheesy.) And not to mention the original song for Frenchy or should I say for Carly Rae Jepsen. The character Frenchy was always fully developed without singing a song and then to give her one that sounds like it came from a completely different musical felt forced and in my face. I felt no chemistry between Danny and Sandy (which admittedly I think are the most boring characters in the musical anyways.) And despite their attempts to give Sandy more depth, Julianne's performance was flatter than a pancake. Another complaint is that it felt like there was a battle of classic dialogue and new material. It often felt as though there was such a huge attempt to cram all of the classic dialogue in, the audience never gets a moment to process any of the jokes that are still funny to this day. The delivery of dialogue never used the magic of a well placed silence, and was pure sound porn (noise, after noise, after noise, to distract the viewer,) for at least the first thirty minutes. Jokes here and there but never resonated. On the contrary they added weird subplots (ie Patty and Eugene dynamic, cheerleading tryouts, Eugene joining the T-birds,) and these scenes felt so slow as if to say "YOU GET IT!? GET IT!?" where there was nothing to get; they were boring and I personally don't understand why they were added. The script to Grease is bad, it's supposed to be bad, it's a parody in and of itself. Trying to give it depth in certain components and leaving others alone leaves the viewer with a strange and lost feeling. We didn't need a slower transition of Sandy to Bad Girl Sandy, we accepted it! We never needed acceptance for Eugene by the T-birds because we accepted Eugene as a nerd. I always figured he went on to own some large company, not become a T-bird. We like Patty Simcox as a two faced bitch. The cast is very large and there's no reason to fully develop every character, because they're supposed to be 2-dimensional!Choreography was great and definitely an attempt to be original. They even added a cheerleading tryout scene to remind us all that Julianne Hough is a professional dancer, don't forget it! However a nice homage to the classic Greased Lightning would have been fully welcomed. In fact the moves the singers do during the number in the live version made it very hard for me to believe they were singing live. I'm not a professional musical theater actor but I find it very hard to believe that they could sing while doing jab, jab, arms out, jump, body roll, hair fix. And not to mention the exotic dancers during the number... Even the hand jive was changed, it was recognizable but it was not right. This was interesting because they made a point to keep so much of the movies choreography but they changed the one, the ONE, iconic move that is consistent through every production I've ever seen.Production value and camera work were impeccable, and while beautiful they are are unfortunately not what makes a musical. If the cast and dialogue isn't working, the camera work can't save it.While I think the camera work and set gives NBC a lot to think about, The Wiz still excelled in being an homage to the musical and the movie while still excelling in being it's own standout performance. There is a fine line between homage and being lazy and I don't think Grease Live fell on the right side of the line. But on that note, I think this was a good first attempt for FOX, and I would be willing to watch future live musicals on their station.
Watch: She goes on to explain how the costume affected her performance.
You wake up at 2 PM. The moment your eyes open you realize that all you want is to eat a pizza. The place closest to you does not deliver, so you’d have to go out to get it yourself. You get up and look in the mirror, realizing that your eyebrows, usually done to perfection, are smeared beyond recognition. Getting a pizza would mean having to do your eyebrows, a momentous amount of effort. You are deeply conflicted. An idea comes to your head: a happy compromise between pizza and eyebrows. You make the call to place your order. You go into your bathroom and do one eyebrow to the best of your abilities. You press your bangs down over the other eyebrow, which is still in total disarray, and secure a baseball cap on your head to keep your bangs in place over your problematic brow. You go out to get your pizza, the person behind the counter compliments what she believes are your perfectly done brows. No one knows that you woke up at 2 PM. No one knows that you only did one eyebrow because you’re so utterly lazy that you couldn’t manage to do both. You get pizza, and you get compliments that you may or may not deserve. You have both won and lost the day.
