there seems to be a fundamental disagreement between microwave oven manufacturers and the producers of microwave meals over whether the customer should know the wattage of their microwave or if such details should be abstracted away from them
the microwave rice demands 800 watts of power for 2 minutes, but all the microwave can offer me three settings: one low, one high, and one somewhere in the middle. I turn it to the one in the middle as I happen to know 800W is the average power of most microwaves. the light comes on and the bag of rice starts slowly turning, but rather than hearing the usual rumble of the microwave, I instead start hearing short snippets of conversation - words snatched from the ether. the lights flicker and a chill runs up my spine. the voices remind me of those "spirit boxes" ghost hunters use. I double check the setting on the microwave. "ah," I say, remembering that I had set it to medium,

repeat after me. humans are not inherently evil humans are not like a virus on this earth humans do not “deserve” to go extinct or anything like that. we are living breathing animals that deserve space just like every other creature on this planet. there’s just a tiny amount of us that have a fuck ton of money and power and they really suck
I'd like to add that getting mired in this mindset makes it harder to actually change the way we interact with this planet. If we're a "parasite", and it's inevitable that we'll damage the natural world, than what's the point of trying to be better? It's just another form of inaction. The only way we get out of this is by acknowledging that we're part of the global ecosystem, and embracing that role with responsibility.
It's the Royal Academy of Art Young Artist's Summer Show. One of my favourite exhibitions of the year. Like. Not only are the older kids insanely talented, the younger ones' artist statements will just punch you right in the face.

I'm reading a study on how nurses define the term 'drug seeking', and what makes them more likely to put the 'drug-seeker' label on a patient's charts and. well. let me just throw down some quotes
"Needy, unable to cope" (<- you try coping with chronic pain)
"Comfort seeking" (<- you mean.. having a preference for not being in pain.. how criminal)
"Using or trying to obtain drugs on a long-term, chronic base" (<- do you understand what 'chronic pain' means.)
"Asking for pain med then returning to sleep."
"States he’s level 10 pain, but does not appear to be in pain (or ‘5= on appearance)." (<- it is well-known that chronic pain patients tend not to display pain in the same way as acute pain patients)
"Dramatic response to pain" (<- notice how this directly contradicts the comment above. you cannot win)
"Gets IV med, then leaves unit to smoke or walk around" (<- wow requiring medication and then going off to do something you needed pain meds to be able to do is so suspicious)
the article itself put it best when it says: “some comments depict patients trying to apply sound pain management principles, such as continuing to take medication for persistent pain”. no wonder all the other literature on the matter says that women of colour are the most likely group to be labelled drug-seeking. this shit is entirely vibes-based (read: based on the prejudices of nurses and doctors)

still one of the most insteresting patterns i've seen with internet harassment campaigns is this agonizing habit to combine or even frontload extremely serious accusations with extremely bullshit ones, or even just like, petty critiques or cringe reacting at art their target has made. one of salem's most prominent harassment blog accused him of all sorts of serious (though obviously spurious) accusations but a lot of them were buried under posts nitpicking how he draws guitar straps. the rodfellows callout doc proclaims to contain a serious accusation of grooming before bogging it under layers and layers of quite frankly embarassing accusations of intelectual property theft cause sometimes the artist drew mickey mouse. any moralizing about christine weston chandler's behavior is rancid transmisogynist dogshit, but it's noteworthy that the harassment campaign started because she made some comics people thought were embarassing.
it's impossible to hide that the serious accusations are post-hoc justification for cringe, people can't handle not liking the thing so they have to accuse of pedophilia, grooming, etc. it's more convenient to argue that the silly puppy art is pedophilic than it is to just not like it and leave it alone.
patrica taxxon made another really incredible short video that talks about this pattern with regards to melanie martinez that's worth checking out
